The biggest drawback to the Old Hickory Butcher Knife is it doesn't come with a sheath. So, I decided to figure out how to make a knife sheath for mine. I split the process into 3 videos to keep it form being too long. Part 1 shows how made a pattern and cut the leather into the correct shape. Just be aware, this is my first ever knife sheath so we are learning together.

I bought 7 survival knives in a lot, but realised after they were not quite the bargain I thought they were without the sheaths. Well made sheaths mean a lot

You can also use sheet rubber from a tire inner tube to make a sheath, or buy sheet rubber at a rubber and hose shop, if you can't find leather. The rubber holds no water, and you get less rust. Some leather has salt used in the tanning. I like the speedy awl a lot, and an awl makes good holes to sew. You cana grind a short awl from a bolt. The fork is a GREAT idea. I like to saddle stitch with 2 needles using stainless steel wire, which insures no rot and greatly reduces any chance of cutting. This is a good video on the mechanics of making a sheath. Did I say the fork was a touch of genius?

$10 for the knife and $7 for sheath material, I think this is a real decent rig. I have never seen anything wrong with a common sense approach and a common man solution outdoor tool. I won't mention any brand names, because they're great products, but if it's good materials, (and I like 1095) then why should one have to burn $250 to carve feather sticks or primitive tent pegs or beat the heck out of a knife batoning wood down. (if necessary) Anyway good video on making a sheath and good, useful info !

even with that speedy leather needle, making holes in leather is hard and you may break the needle, I wet the leather a little just so the hole spacer will leave a seeable mark, then I use my batter powered drill with a 1/16 bit to make the holes, it saves a lot of work making holes with a dull needle.. I use good cow hide though, one half hide at a time.

Yeah, I know but I didn't have the stuff to do that. I took a look at Tandy leather and quickly found out you can spend a small fortune on leather working supplies. I opted for the low budget way.

Have this knife and want to make a sheath..found marsh rat on KZbin ..looks like it would be much easier for me and you as beginners.. Great job for sticking it out and finishing the sheath, I would have been frustrated fumbling with the welt and sewing and trying to hold it all together.. Planning on going to hobby lobby and get some material and make a rig for my step son for Xmas.. Thanks for the video!

what about PVC? for some of us, getting a full setup for leather working, and learning curve, PVC can be more forgiving and cost effective.

1. Fold a piece of cardboard over the blade so that it covers both sides. 2. Wrap cardboard with duct tape.
