To keep goal from tipping you may want to fill the bottom of the goal with sand before you finish attaching everything

MY FATHER AND I BUILT THIS IN 1990!!! It was my father's idea and I helped him out----but here is the kicker---I COULD ACTUALLY DISASSEMBLE THE DANG THING THROW IT IN A HOME MADE SACK...walk out into a field and put it together. It was truly an out of this world, space age DO IT YOURSELF/FATHER & DAD project. A couple of observations about this design. FIRST IT IS FANTASTIC AND QUICK but the cinder block is bit of a problem. When people shoot on this goal the posts will flex backwards pretty hard and eventually give out; also the inability to absorb the shots and pegged in the back with the weight will only make it less forgiving. My father''s design accounted for this providing stability and structural integrity, preventing it from bending one way or the other; that is we actually extended a pipe withe ease which ran from the center of the cross bar down to the back end. While this did appear a bit odd it nonetheless did the job and it worked like a champ. My friends were astonished by it. Today the athletic stores have some very good alternatives, perhaps a bit pricier but in the end better.

If you want to make a homemade one, and don't want the PVC posts to break like it does with tis one, then use copper tubing. They make the same joiners/couplers for copper tubing, and its pretty heavy. Might like dent after a lot of shots, but it wont shatter with one hit.

Thanks for the vid. As a lax dad with 3 boys playing, I appreciate cheap alternatives so I can keep putting money into better equipment as they outgrow it. For those complaining about zip ties breaking, use rope or velcro or anything else that can hold the net on to the pipe. There are plenty of ways to attach the net that are still cheap.

I built one a while ago and got the supplies from home depot, only cost me about $25 give or take. But it's a pretty solid goal, lasted me about 2 months before the cracks on the pipes got too serious, and had to be replaced. But if your shots don't hit pipe alot, you'll be fine. Great guide, great video!

I built a similar net, for box lacrosse. The dimensions are 4'X4'. I used ABS instead of PVC. I cut 4 of the pipes at 46.5" and one at 42.5". For the back connection, I used a 45 degree Y, and then added a 22 degree connector to the Y. The 42.5" pipe inserts into the 22. The bottom of the goal to flares out about an inch or two. To finish off the frame, I added a threaded male/female cleanout adapter to the tail of the Y to fill the pipes with sand. The net is a replacement net from walmart.

just a thought, rather than a 'cinder block', why not fill the pipe with sand? the weight should then be evenly distributed and will stop it blowing over or being knocked about in practice.

Many people have expressed their concerns over the pipes possibly cracking. My son (he's 9) has been using it for a year and so far, so good. I'll be the first to say this is NOT intended to be used in a real game for any level, let alone high school and college. Will it last forever? I seriously doubt it. However, is it a cheap way to have a goal in your backyard for your kid to practice shots and a few dodges toward the goal? Absolutely!

Black84camero - many people have said the same thing and I've replied many times: due to limitations in the materials being used (cpvc piping) you are stuck using what parts are available. A longer base would require the angle at the back to be more acute (tighter) but the first angle available in cpvc joints is 90°. Thus, by the rigid rules of geometry, the bottom is what it is.
@roman1766
@roman1766 13 жыл бұрын
@blast - yes you're right about the regulation size thing. However with the limits of the parts available, you're somewhat stuck with the dimensions: the 90 degree connectors dictate the length of the legs along the ground. You simply can't make the legs longer and still use a 90 degree angle (think about it - if you make it 7' long, the hypotenuse (side opposite the angle and the front of the goal) is by definition longer unless you can make a tighter angle at the back - but those aren't made.

Just an idea for those of you. It will be much safer to either fill the bottom tubes with sand or use a sand bag instead of a cinder block.

Great vid. Very informative, that may have been you problem with it being so heavy in the front, that the poles in the back weren't long enough to compensate. Out of curiosity, wouldn't that make the poles in the back also 5'7"?

Nice video, also what you can do instead of using a cinder block in the back is once you have the bottom of the triangle glued, fill it with some sand or water.

You're right. I'm not 6'4"...actually I'm about 6' 4.5". In the section where I dry fit the pipes, I had cut them too long because I forgot to account for the length of the connectors and the goal was about 6'6" at that point. If you watch to the end when I've corrected this error, you will see that I am much taller than the 6' OPENING. If you still are not satisfied with that answer, I'm more than happy to show you my driver's license.

maybe if you fill the pipes with sand the chances of shatter them with a shot will decrease, also will be more dificult to push if someone runs in to it. It doesnt matter if it is heavier or fragile, is just for training ...

Tom - good eye on the carriage bolts. Originally, I was going to run them vertically through the base to use as spikes to hold the goal to the ground but decided not to. Thus, you missed nothing but caught much.

some advice: you dont want you net tight because it will eventually rip if it doesnt have slack for the shot. also you could string the net to the pipes all around rather then using zipties which also will easily break. and lastly if you go with the looser net like you should, you could take some rope and weave it through the net going from the top corner, down to the V in the back to hold up some slack. but otherwise pretty sick design dude

i just built this and used for like 48 hours straight. i have to say i must have hit the pipes 10-20 times each and its like a normal goal it bounces right off. The only thing i would reccomend is to string the net like a normal goal. I had to replace alot of them.

@blast con't - also since you're stuck with 90 degree connectors, (there are 45/135's too, but you need more acute, not obtuse angles), the two front 90 degree connectors on the ground have to be turned to make 45 degree angles (a triangle (looking down from above) has 180 degrees total = 90 + 45 +45). If you find a way around this, I'd love to know!

@linkmager99 I wouldn't use 1.5" PVC. It's only marginally cheaper and not as strong (you might save $5 if even that). Can you use a tarp instead of a net? Sure...if you want to make a giant sail or kite! One good gust of wind and it's gone....

@ndalax7 - This isn't intended for college players in a full-contact, 100% regulation game. It's for your kids in the backyard as a practice goal. As for the pipes shattering, I'm a 6'4" 250 lb guy who can shoot a lax ball pretty hard and it's withstood direct hits from me. Will it outlast a regulation, official goal? No....but for $30 it's a pretty good backyard bargain for your kids.

In response, you should use something other than PVC. That defeats the purpose of the low budget I understand, As your kid grows, and shot speed increases, PVC will break WAY TOO EASILY. Upgrade to metal piping. The elbow joints allow for any base angle due to the threads. Take into account the length of the joints, so the length of pipes for the sides and crossbar will be short of 6ft. It will last, and all that needs to happen cap the base pieces.

@GoofyLongBoarder455 - oh...one other thing. I noticed that when I cut the 6' top pipe down to 5'7" (to account for the 90 degree couplings), the two legs to the back should be cut down to 3'11" from 4', otherwise the goal at the bottom is slightly larger than 6' while the top of the opening is right at 6'.

Yes, PVC can break, however so far, so good. And YES! using metal piping completely defeats the low-budget purpose. Realize the goal of this goal is CHEAP, not necessarily longevity. If you want to go with metal pipe, instead of dealing with making that yourself, just buy a regulation metal goal.

@jack - pretty sure I outline what is needed at the beginning of the video. But to recap, you'll need three, 10' sections of 2" PVC piping (get four just in case you make a mistake...it's cheap), five 90 degree PVC couplings, and PVC primer and glue. Of course you'll need a net and zipties to attach it. Tools needed are a saw, measuring tape and snips.

@sito1104 - see my many comments which answer your question about the geometry of the goal. In short, yes it should be longer, but in this case you are limited by the materials available (PVC piping and connectors). To keep the goal opening at 6' (that's the important thing for practice) while making the back longer, the angle at the back would become more acute (narrower). This is basic geometry (draw it on paper and you'll see). More acute PVC connectors aren't available.
