Sorry I was totally mesmerise by your daughter playing 'horses' with the brush. Took me back to a little boy well over half a century ago. I think how you drilled the holes in the octagon piece was amazing, same with the hole saw in to brass. I would never have been that even if I was fit and well, and I think even then I would still have a hybrid shop at least to begin with. My drill press is probably my most used power tool. It was a beautiful job, very well done.

What I'd like to see is how to build a screw box that can cut a new scew. Found very little on the net.
@WoodByWright Жыл бұрын
I have a video showing how to cut a large screw with out the screw box. I want to show making one for a large screw like this, but the problem is getting the cutters. you need to make them yourself or find a black smith that can make them for you. on one makes them that large that I have found. and on top of that you need 2-4 cutters for a box that size.

Awesome; just awesome. -This is a _vise_ man! Wood By Wright always bro..and yea man she looks beautiful ive always wanted one . maybe one of these days.haha! i need a new workbench 1st..lol question about that: for it to remain stable and sturdy do the workbench legs need to be a certain thickness and width? hope that makes sense. Lol
@WoodByWright8 жыл бұрын
that all depends on what they are made of. mine are 3" x3.5" Doug fir and that is not strong enough. I wish I made then at least 6" X 3" but if I were to make it out of hard maple that size I have should be enough.
@tooljunkie5558 жыл бұрын
Wood By Wright mine are three two by fours glue together to make a somewhat of a square..so yea mine wouldnt be any good either then with my new workbench I was going to make the legs with 4 2x4s glued together this time..but maybe i could make just the one leg beefier than the rest so itll hold the vise more or do you think thats not a good idea

I've been trying to understand how the collars work in these wooden vices. How do the retention plates actually work? I can't see how putting a collar loosely around a round bar would make any differences. Is it supposed to be a tight fit, and that's how it works? Thanks.
@WoodByWright Жыл бұрын
Color fits into a groove in the screw so that the chop moves in and out with the head of the screw. It's a retention ring
@censusgary5 жыл бұрын
Why does the bottom end of the “chop” need to be smaller than the top end?
@WoodByWright5 жыл бұрын
It doesn't need to be smaller. But leaving it large blocks a lot of the storage underneath the bench and the larger with the bottom is of no use.

The new vise turned out great. Any particular reason why you didn't cut the hole in the brass before cutting it to size?
@WoodByWright8 жыл бұрын
thanks! this was a pleasure to build. It would have been extremely difficult to cut half a hole. the bar of brass came as 2" wide stock 12" long. I cut it down to 2 bars 4" long.
@MatthewBuntyn8 жыл бұрын
I was making coffee during that part, and missed that the bar was that size. I thought it was 4" wide, and you precut your pieces to 2"x4"
@WoodByWright8 жыл бұрын
that would make a difference!I thought about finding 4" wide stock but it was a good bit more because the shortest they sell is 12"

Looks great. I need something like that in my shop, but first I need to upgrade to a more stout workbench. Did you consider a more aggressive chamfer on the top of the chop? I think that would make some operations easier (e.g sawing in the vise when you want to drop your hand to saw at an angle)
@WoodByWright8 жыл бұрын
thanks. if I used this vice for sawing I would, but my two leg vices are more for edge planing. my face vice on the end is far more suited for most saw cuts. and if I am doing half blind dovetails then I am going to use the Moxon vice. I think I have too many vices!

Beautiful, I love it too! I'm wondering if the neck of the bowtie is too narrow? I usually see them a little fatter, why did you make it so thin?
@WoodByWright8 жыл бұрын
hard maple has an extream tinsel strength. and the crack on this one was only 1/2" deep and the tie is 3/4" thick. it is actually much stronger than it needs to be.
@alasdairreed43708 жыл бұрын
Hi James, Nice video. Beautiful vise. Love your use of the brace, the use of a hole saw with a brace was an eyeopener. What brand of auger drill bit do you use? I notice your bits look very new as opposed to vintage is there a modern maker that you like?I have a few vintage but it is always a risk buying them especially on eBay where it can be very difficult to tell exactly how much refurbishing they need. It would be nice to get a set new and be done with it.
@WoodByWright8 жыл бұрын
thank you. all of my brace bits are vintage. I like the old Rockford bits the more. I have not found a new company that I really like. all of mine have been restored in a vinegar bath and re-sharpened.

That was the trick, the vinegar bath! Hence the shine . Thanks :)

@@WoodByWright I'd love that! It'd be good to have that information for an informed choice. I'm currently deciding between a modern vise and a traditional screw, so I would find that helpful.
@daviddorothy49698 жыл бұрын
That is a really nice vise! You did a great job! Actually I'm curious, did you keep the offcuts for another project? I've found that offcuts even thin and narrow ones are useful for small projects. Also sorry about the really rough saw marks. It was probably partly because I don't have a top chain yet and some of the boards were cut from both sides because my chainsaw only has a 16 inch bar. I got the chainsaw for a different purpose originally and it will not accept a larger bar.
@WoodByWright8 жыл бұрын
OH YESS! I kept the off cuts. got a few things planned for them. that surface is normal for chainsaw mill no matter the type. it was a serious pleasure to work with it is an enjoyable wood for hand tools. Thanks again for the slab I am going to cherish this for a long time.

Interesting term: chop. what might this be?
@WoodByWright8 жыл бұрын
that is what you call the large slab of a clamp that slides back and forth. either on a leg vise or a Moxon Vise. Whereas jaw just refers to the portion of the chop above the screw that actually clamps the work to the bench. Does that answer your question? thanks!

Wood By Wright thanks for the reply. I’m hoping to build a bench this spring and looking at the wooden screws. I like the octagonal shape on the acer so I’ll probably go with that one!

I'm guessing you prefer Barge because of the consistency. I personally don't like Barge all that well because of its really long working time. I prefer Master Contact Cement (look for a white can with a lion logo), at least for shoemaking. It has a much shorter working time - like for that chop you'd get it covered and then be immediately ready to adhere it - and it has the thicker consistency like Barge. Plus, this is anecdotal, but the shoe soles I've glued with it seem like they hold on much longer. Admittedly a leg vise chop isn't getting slogged through mud, so it's probably not as important there.
@WoodByWright8 жыл бұрын
+fisharmor I have never tried that. I will have to add it to the list thanks.
