Where is the rest of the setup? It's kinda crazy you say that you'll keep a gecko in there it's whole life. If you think your gecko is having trouble because the enclosure is "too big" could be due to there not being enough stuff in it. In every country except the US the standard size for a Leo is a 40 gallon. Yeah your animals may look good but there is no way you have to think this is cool for their whole life like cmon

Everyone will have their own perspective on breeder setup vs naturalistic setups. I am ok with that. But we do know that leopard geckos have reproduced and seemingly thrived in breeder setups for the last 30 years in the USA, so I would say it's hard to speak against that data.

Ive had baby geckos in big tubs not eat, almost die, and the minute i put them into smaller tubs begin eating and thriving, same with ball pythons, natural instinct "can" make them feel more secure, every animal is different right, but for 30 years breeders have had tremendous success with set ups like this. Thanks for your input :)
@rattiini
@rattiini 3 жыл бұрын
"rack setups have allowed leopard geckos to thrive and breed in captivity for 30+ years." Rack setups have allowed BREEDERS to thrive and breed (leos) in captivity for 30+ years, they have allowed BREEDERS to saturate the market with leopard geckos. Rack systems, especially ones as poor as these do not allow a leopard gecko to thrive, only to survive. For most people who care for their animals ie. reptile pet keepers, this is not enough by any standard. Most of us have our bar higher than "this animal is alive, great job." Pretending these animals don't need UVB as well as adequate heating and an enriching environment (at least 3 hides, 1 warm, 1 cool & 1 humid is apparently anthropomorphising to you?) to benefit you (and keepers like yourself) in terms of cost and effort is a stinky move. I suggest you catch up with the science of reptile keeping as you seem to be stuck in the 90s along with Brian Barczyk himself. If I were to buy an animal from a breeder and setups like this were their standard, I'd be looking to purchase elsewhere and adding them to a blacklist. May I also add that there is an in-between to "tiny enclosure they feel secure in despite not being able to turn around" vs "large open enclosure oh no scary spooky barren". You get a large enclosure and FILL it, this is the enrichment part. Clutter that vivarium up, then they will feel secure and have an environment that's actually enjoyable for you to look at, enjoyable for them to roam and allow them to exercise and explore instead of....sitting in one spot all day, every day. I am tired of this "argument" being used as an excuse to put certain reptiles in the smallest space possible - see also: ball pythons.
@GeekyGeckoCreations
@GeekyGeckoCreations 3 жыл бұрын
Racks provide, security, easier to clean spaces therefore more bacteria-free, safety and security for the gecko. In the wild they live in small small rock crevices to feel safe. And its also easier to find food in smaller enclosures so ball pythons, and certain geckos do really well in these conditions :)
@rattiini
@rattiini 3 жыл бұрын
@@GeekyGeckoCreations certain rack systems can be done well, but they are for the convenience of the keeper. A rack system that does not allow for any light or space for more than one hide is not a good one. Yes in the wild geckos (and bps) like to have small spaces to retreat to to feel comfortable, we replicate this with HIDES, not the whole enclosure. They do not spend their entire life in these cramped spaces in the wild, they roam & hunt. Using the outdated "small space" answer as an excuse to house your gecko in a tiny enclosure and claim they feel "secure" is entirely misunderstanding how these animals work and imo, anthropomorphising your geckos to benefit you as the keeper by pushing the narrative that they are happier like this. "Tiny space bad? No see, he loves it, look how secure he feels" Again if you are unable to deal with the upkeep of a decently sized leo enclosure, why get one? Its not difficult to spot clean leo poops, clean water dishes and change the sub (if loose) every now and then. I wouldn't shove my rats into a cage far too small for them because it's too much effort to clean a properly sized cage. You buy the animal, you provide adequate housing and care.

Leopard geckos do not yhrive on these... but yeah these make money for someone who only wants their gecko to stay alive but never thrive. So sad, you dont have to buy the most expensive glass terrarium but atleast give a good life by not making them live in a luch box. Same as I said to brian, no hate otherwise nothing personal, just this leopard gecko housing that disgusts me. They are already super neglected throwaway pets and this does NOT help! Breeders should be promoting good care!
@GeekyGeckoCreations
@GeekyGeckoCreations 3 жыл бұрын
Jasmina thank you for your honest feedback, I will receive that. As a breeder, you know that we ahve large colelctions which require a lot of time, money and space, so when you can keep animals "simpler" you do. I have personally seen leoaprd geckos starve themselves, and not eat in bigger tubs ive used in the past, and the minute I love them over to a smaller tub they start smashing mealworms and thriving. Geckos do not think like we do, they have 3 basic needs, food, water, shelter, often times just like ball pythons, leopard geckos feel safer in tight spaces where they have no fear of predators. We see the same thing happen in teh ball python world, bigger tubs often lead to insecuirty in the animals and you know as well as I do, when animals are stressed they just dont eat. Ive had breeder females starve themselves to death because of their uncomfort with their bodies breeding, this is extremely rare, but stress can induce starvation behavior in leoaprd geckos and ball pythons. Also remember the main reason you as a hobbiest can buy a gecko for $200 instead of $2000 is because of breeders. If breeder set ups were larger and more expensive, most people would not be able to afford the inflated prices that would come into the hobby as a whole, does that make sense? We truely care about our animals as breeders but we also have to minimize expenses. One last point, less moving parts makes things easier to clean, things that are easier to clean have less bacteria build up, pathogens and other transferable diseases that come from feeder insects, poop, or water slime. I love how easy it is to clean a simple set up, and again, give the gecko what he/she needs in a clean healthy environment. I know you have your perspective and it's a great one I just want you to see mine. Thank you for the comment.

@@GeekyGeckoCreations I do undrstand. I just think that couple hidrs and enrichement CAN be done even in racks. Anyway would be awesom to put a disclaimer that you make this for breeding purposes but someone that does not breed should not go with this as it is not nessessary for a regular keeper or a first time keeper. Maybe put a video about affordable setup that has the requirements that a gecko can thrive? I have many of my reptiles in vivariums but one of my leopard geckos is actually in a bin cage as I has a big storage bin lying around. I put up a very nice setup for him for about 20 euros (about 27 dollars) and I thinks that is pretty affordable. I think that kind of video would be appreciated, would collect some views and promote good care for first time keepers.

@@jasminahaverinen5759 Yeh definately, veyr good idea, I will def see if i can get a video like that up in the future, even a bioactive video, for now as a breeder I dont ahve any bioactive set ups for my leos but I would imagine as time goes on I might set up a couple for fun and also to show people, like you said, who are keeping for pets, the best set up possible. THanks Jasmina! :D

I would have to disagree, rack setups have allowed leopard geckos to thrive and breed in captivity for 30+ years.

I prefer it on the hot side, but if you do this just keep in mind it will evaporate faster so you'll need to spray a little more :D I like the hot side because it makes a little sauna for them and really helps with shed and they love it! Hot side should be 90-95 max for this tho :D unless the humid hide is super insulated. They really like it around 82-85 inside their humid hide! :D

@@GeekyGeckoCreations yeah thats fine im usually sorting them every day anyway lol, just soo much mix info , im mainy just worried about them getting respatory issues as there in there little saunas most of the day lol and my hot side is around 33•c but when you say it should be a max of 90-95f is there a reason for that if its constantly sprayed ??? love your vids btw man im allways watching lol

I personally don't like the rack system for adults, but to each their own. I will say leos need at least 3 hides (warm/cool/moist). Not an attack, you have good videos overall.

Thanks yeah, and Im sure you know i care tremendously about all my animals. This is not to go against what you said, but its common for us humans to project our "thoughts" of the animal's needs into fact when in reality they are just "our feelings" or "our thoughts"...I do believe animals have feelings, but it's funny, there are a lot of observational experiences by breeders who observed geckos and ball pythons and im sure other species that felt insecure in a big open tank and did not eat, breed, or thrive, but when transferred to a breeder set up, they began eating, thriving, breeding, for the simple fact that they "felt" more secure, or at least, that seems to be what the observation is telling us, you know? I assign feelings to my animals too, I do, but at the end of the day, what I believe the animal truly cares about most is the feeling of security and safety, which surprisingly, smaller spaces can give "certain" animals, this is not a recipe for all animals but in the case of ball pythons and leopard geckos, it "seems" to be evident through breeder experiences.

Thanks, yeh many people don't like the tub set ups for adults. But I can tell you it is easy to keep a large collection of hundreds of leos very clean and bacteria free this way, and of course fed and supplemented all on time because of the size/simplicity of set up.
