I have started a journal using your instructions, only I wasn't ready to commit to a year, so I found a soft cover children's book at a second hand store that only had about 14 pages. :-) I too chose it because of the proportions of the pages. A little bit wider than normal. (Something nice about that eh?) I am working on my first spread now. I've been wanting to make some kind of art journal for a long time now and many of the ones I saw were very intimidating and required huge amounts of supplies and used techniques I wasn't that fond of. But for some reason, your way of doing it just clicked with me! I've been having a ball cutting things out of books and magazines. I like the relaxed idea of working on a spread for several days. I like leaving it on my work table and just looking at it. When I have a few spare moments I can sit down and add a couple of things and then let it" rest" for another day or so. :-) I enjoy your work and I appreciate the time you take to make these videos. Thank you!

Hi Tamsen.....YES!!! This is exactly what I was hoping to inspire - hooray for you. A children's book is a great idea. I do exactly the same thing as you - my journal is always sitting on my desk and I'll pick it up and put a few things in it everyday. I'm currently working on creating a full-fledge art journal from a magazine. I will let you know how that goes! TFW. Joanne

Thanks so much for sharing your process, I love the Tyvek tip, I use the Tyvek envelope for the spine on my junk journals, I keep forgetting it also comes in tape form. I have to go to HD to grab some of that! I really loved all your commentary on yourself, so funny. Thanks again.

Hey Rula, welcome back! Thanks for the kind words. The tape form of Tyvek has been such a convenience, I too used to use the envelopes, but it's such a pain to cut them. The tape is super convenient. I think I paid around $10 for it, but there's a lot on the roll. I have had mine for at least 2 years and I use it very often and there's still a lot left! TFW. Joanne

Ramona Gaston They both work well, it's really a matter of which size you like. You mentioned the travel one, are you talking about the Israel one? If so, yes, that one was a lot of work. I was referencing this video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/mJbWi3yuma5rmrc Have you watched this one? Joanne

craftyhodges I was talking about the one with the J Davenport napkins on the cover, the little half one, well it was made by folding the magazine pages in half. I like that one. BTW, this full sized one, it seems the pages would be too thin. You don't glue two together, I noticed. Oh, I bet you put the copy paper on every page. I see. I originally thought you only did that to the front spread. I'm watching your April flip now. I thought the white background was Gesso.
@craftyhodges
@craftyhodges 7 жыл бұрын
The Jane Davenport cover is the Traveler's Notebook....I LOVE that one. I use it more as a glue book/art journal - love it. On the large magazine, you're correct, I use printer paper on every page. Pages become nice and sturdy, no need to glue them together. I wanted a plain, white background to do my weekly journaling, which is why I went that path. You could certainly use gesso though and glue several pages together. You'll need to find what works best for your needs, because it's different for everyone. Most importantly - have fun working in it! Joanne

I've found that using Yes! paste gives me better results than glue stick glue when gluing paper together. It's a more permanent stick. For large surface areas like the paper you glued into the magazine, you can use a credit card to apply a very thin layer easily.
@craftyhodges
@craftyhodges 7 жыл бұрын
Hi Serena...you are definitely right about Yes! paste it does work well. I just always struggle with how thick it is - I would probably use it more if I thinned it out a bit. I just always forget about it. Thanks for the reminder. Joanne

I still have the washi obsession....with even more containers than before. BUT, in my defense, I use it everyday. I'm glad you were having fun binge watching the videos...I hope you had an opportunity to catch up. If you have any questions...please just let me know. Hopefully you'll get a response quicker than 4 months. xoxo Joanne

love the video, I'm wondering when you fold over the washi tape to the following page that has no paper on it, do you put the paper of the washing tape and then use more washi over the paper ?

Hi Dorre.....this is a super old video and I have more current ones that show how I make magazine journals (link in the notes above). I don't normally fold it over onto the page until I have paper on both sides. I'm honestly not sure why I showed it that way. This video was when I was just starting out, so please forgive the errors, shaking and just bad quality! Thanks for watching though.....xoxo Joanne

Introducing the fourth chipmunk! Crafty hodges! Love it This was a wonderful tutorial. Other people suggest you should work the magazine spine straight and even.. any thoughts?
@craftyhodges
@craftyhodges 6 жыл бұрын
Oh I know Laura - that's why I did the REBOOT video because I was so embarrassed with the chipmunk voice!! At that time I had to keep KZbin postings under 15 minutes. Regarding the spine, certainly that is something that you can do....whatever you like and meets your needs. Personally, I don't care if it rolls. To keep the spine straight and even would mean rotating front to back, back to front on a regular basis. I think that would drive me nuts trying to find the current week. Hope that helps. Joanne

Hi France....if you've seen my flips, you probably realized I rarely write in my journal....I document things that happen or things I remember, but only occasion to I write...and I usually cover that with a flip or pocket. An art journal is a great way to use a magazine journal. You mentioned you made one...hope you followed the REBOOT video, I think it's alot better than this one. But glad you made one! Joanne

I've never tried using Gesso on magazine pages - it probably would thicken them up nicely, but I'm sure you'd have some wrinkling. Give it a try...the worst that could happen is you rip out a page from the magazine...right? Joanne

Hi Karen! So happy you've decided to give a magazine journal a try!!! I'm going to point you to an updated "magazine journal" video that might also give you more information...here's the link for that: kzbin.info/www/bejne/onuWZYimqdiYhNU Regarding the number of pages - it depends exactly how you're going to use it. In my case, I use it as a weekly spread, so there are 52 weeks in a year and it's a 2 page spread, so I need 110 pages, plus a couple of extra so I have a recap in the beginning and something for the end. I try and find a magazine that is very close in number so I don't have to rip out alot of pages. I hope that helps Karen. Let me know if you have any questions - I'm here to help. Joanne

Enjoyed your video. Are the pages of sunset magazine thick or thin? Or does it.matter what type of paper you use?
@craftyhodges
@craftyhodges 7 жыл бұрын
Clara Avin Hi Clara! I would say the pages in Sunset are thin...pretty similar to most magazines. When combined with printer paper it makes it a nice weight. If you watch my November flip, you'll see how thick it's become, but I have had absolutely no problems with pages coming out. The video of the Israel journal was made using a magazine whose pages were stapled and I had to reinforce by sewing a simple 3 hole pamphlet stitch to reinforce, even though I had used packing tape to secure it. It was super strong when it was complete. Let me know if you have any other questions...I'm here to help. Joanne

What kind of white paper do you glue in to decorate?
@craftyhodges
@craftyhodges 6 жыл бұрын
Hi Maureen! I just use copy/printer paper - 20# weight. Nothing special. If you think you're going to make a magazine journal, I would encourage you to watch my REBOOT video (link below) to get some additional tips and tricks when making a magazine journal. Also....two things I've discovered since making the REBOOT video...1) DO NOT use a Magnolia Journal magazine, it will fall apart. 2) put your glue directly on the magazine page (vs. the copy paper) and it will go down much easier. If you have any questions...please just ask. TFW. Joanne kzbin.info/www/bejne/onuWZYimqdiYhNU

Hi Joanne, question... could I glue/tape 2 magazines together with packing tape or duct tape? I have found a couple of magazines that will work but they are short of enough pages for a year. I would like to do a year journal. Not sure how I'm going to do it but I think it will work. Just wondering if you have ever tried this? P. S. Your helium voice is hilarious :D Thanks! Cindy
@craftyhodges

Sanctuaryrain S hi Cindy, yes you sure can glue 2 magazines together. I have not tried it, but I did find this woman on KZbin who has a demo showing how to do it. Here's the link - hope it helps. kzbin.info/www/bejne/maCZiKV9nLCkhaM As another suggestion, perhaps consider 2 volumes for the year - maybe 6 months in each. I am currently doing one year in one magazine with a spread a week. It's getting very big and I have to put a book under the right side of the page when I am writing. It's not a big deal, just something to consider. Let me know how else I can help...TFW. Joanne

@craftyhodges
@craftyhodges 6 жыл бұрын
Okay, I understand. I'm not sure of the weight of the paper, but if it's like copy paper/printer paper, I would suggest gluing the pages together, using a glue stick. Then put washi tape along the edge to give it a nice finish and add some extra color. Then you can add all of the ephemera you collected. I would be hesitant to add any gesso or paint - you could definitely stamp on the pages though. Also I would suggest you reinforce the center with clear packing tape, duct tape or something similar that you have available to you. You need it to be strong tape. The staples will not hold well as you start to fill the journal. Does that help?? If not, send me an email at: craftyhodges@gmail.com and we can discuss further. Joanne

No they are lined note paper stapled together in middle. 8 1/4 inches X 6 1/4 inches holding 80 pages. In many European countries you get these small notebooks. These are recycled and the covers are just a tad thicker. 3 in a pack for 1 euro which is about the same in dollars. Here is an example but there is white lined paper inside: www.hema.nl/winkel/vrije-tijd-kantoor/school-kantoor/papierwaren/schriften/3-pak-schriften-a5-gelinieerd-(14540660)?variant=14540660
