At time …. minute 7:38 - 8:35 One thing I did to be able to see the mat when citing the 27” length x 44” length was to fold the material in 1/2. Helped for myself to keep more accurate. Thanks Jen for the updated “Magic Pillow Instructions”. Few suggestions: use magic sizing on the fabric before cutting and you will find that not only are your cuts more accurate, but the rest of the assembly will be easier; also after stitching the first 1/4” seam and before you turn give a press to those stitches to set the seam, for this will also aid in getting the balance of the french seam construction completed; and finally take the Clover tool and run it down the side and bottom seam for this too will help in getting that final step in the french seam construction.

I've made your Magic Pillowcase several times in the past. They make great gifts but confess that I make them for myself more than for others. Thank you for your very clear and precise instructions. However, today is not my day. And these are my mistakes...nothing at all to do with you. First I layered the fabrics in the wrong order...had to rip it out and start over. Then, I sewed the cuff and the body in two different directions...I'm using one way prints...had to rip it out again! I am confident that third time's the charm! Thanks again :-)

I reviewed this video and comments before cutting my directional fabric. Great instructions! Another component that would be very helpful, as one commenter mentioned, is how to determine the pattern layout/direction if you want to end up with the cuff on the right or left side. Some of us need the visual rather than written instructions. Thanks so much for the video tutorial!

I have been sewing these pillowcases for quite a few years. Since they have been used and washed numerous times I noticed early on that the accent strip would wrinkle. If you sew it down before you do the French Seam, it doesn't get all caddy-wampus on you when you take it out of the dryer. (I don't iron pillowcases anymore.) Love watching your videos. They are very helpfull.

I love using fancy decorative stitching as accent on the trim piece. I also adjust its width to complement the chosen fabric. Sometimes a little accent is all that is needed, not the full inch or wider trim piece. This style is so easy to customize.

This was a first-time ever sewing project for her and first time for a pillowcase for both of us! We had picked out directional fabric (unicorns), but we had the material cut to the instructions of a different video. No worries. It still came out looking great and she was super happy (so was I)! Thank you so much for this pattern and instructions. I am new to sewing and I am so excited to be able to make something homemade for my adult children that they will actually use. When I was buying my fabrics everyone at the fabric store kept telling me that my fabric was directional so be careful. I didn't fully understand what they meant. One shopper told me about your website and told me to watch his video first before cutting. THANK YOU!! Without these instructions, I would have most likely messed up the cutting and would have been so disappointed as the fabric I am using is no longer available. I hope to make a quilt for next year. You mentioned the link to the free pattern download. When I clicked on the link and went to your site the pattern still said it was free and pointed to another link. That takes you to a professionally printed pattern that you need to buy instead of one to download. Absolutely love the video though. You do need to change alternate where you place the cuff if your making matching pillowcases, one on the left and the other on the right side.

Thank you for the video, I was given some kids directional fabric so this helps a lot. One question that you didn't mention in the video and just wanted to confirm - if you want the cuff to lay on the right, you would put the main fabric with the top to the left when pinning, but if you want the cuff on the right, you would lay it with the top on the right, correct?
@ShabbyFabrics3 жыл бұрын
Yes, that seems to be the correct answer. For a cuff on the opposite side, you would turn your fabric 180 degrees and put the cuff on that side. You can check the accuracy of this by only sewing approximately 4 inches in and peeking inside the rolled tube you've created to see if this is working. Thanks for watching! ✨ -Michelle

Wonderful tutorial, these pillowcases will make great gifts. Did you use a walking foot?
@ShabbyFabrics2 жыл бұрын
Thank you! We are very happy you enjoy this fun project! Yes, these pillowcases are great for gifting (and donating!!). The foot you see on our Bernina is the Bernina 97D. It's a specific foot designed for straight stitch/patchwork. We do not use a walking foot when creating our Magic Pillowcases. Hope this makes sense!! 🌷 -Michelle

Why not just fold the fabric in half when cutting the 27” width? Then you’d be cutting 22” and you’d see what you’re doing. Not all fabrics line up. Some patterns run on the diagonal, so you might not be able to line up the “top of the hammock.” Also, won’t the pattern be upside down on the back side of the pillowcase? I’ve done directional ones by cutting the 27” x 45” fabric into 2 pieces that are 27” x 22.5”, then rotate one and sew them back together before continuing. Then both sides of the pillowcase are correct and it can be used with the opening going toward the left or right.

@linjber, I was thinking the same thing, cut that body in half, allowing for a seam allowance, then it stays right side up.

I purchased your magic pillowcase booklet. My question is how do you cut directional material for cuff? I make the cuff with print, the border accent another pop of color and the body solid cotton. Reason for this, I embroidery name of person getting pillow case. So I’m having trouble placing for cuff for standard and toddler pillowcases. Thank you if you can help me with placement. I use your booklet on magic pillow cases.

wonderful tutorial, I still messed up. Nice pillows you made. It would be good to see the fabric cut right from the fabric bolster and onward. thank you for the tutorial

Thank you for your videos. I learn so much. Are you using a walking foot? When do I use my walking foot. I have a Brother machine. Thanks and have a wonderful day!

Hi NP Bird! Yes, you can use your walking foot for this project. We tend to use a walking foot for straight stitching. -Michelle

Does this method still come out correctly if you do not use an accent piece of fabric when making this pillowcase? Thank you!

Do you recommend washing the fabric first?
@ShabbyFabrics3 жыл бұрын
We tend to not wash our fabrics prior to creating a project- we do use a spray starch and steam prior to measuring & cutting. Hope that helps!! -Michelle

Please tell me if the trim piece is pressed toward the opening or toward the body of the pillowcase?
@ShabbyFabrics Жыл бұрын
Hi Joan. Our Sewing Room says that either is fine. They would suggest to press to the side the fabric wants to go. Hope this helps! -Michelle

How do you layer the accent piece so that the end faces the cuff instead of the body? I ask because I'd like to use lace instead of a plain piece of fabric and I'd like the "skirt" to flare toward the cuff end.
@ShabbyFabrics4 жыл бұрын
I'd recommend testing this process on a smaller, scrap version, just to make sure everything works the way you want it to! Here's what we'd recommend: Press the accent strip (or lace, in this instance) toward the cuff. Then, when folding the pillow together, verify that the accent strip is folded toward the cuff. The accent strip (lace) will then be sewn into the seam toward the cuff. Let me know how it goes! - Morgan
