I'm just looking to get into this hobby. It looks really cool. According to your video in order to make a ring out of a US quarter i can use the .9 /17/1.0 die, .7/17/.8 die, anvil and the stainless center cone. I can get all of these offline through Jason works? Are there any other sites?

Another great video. Been making a few coin rings myself over the last 12 months and another cheap alternative is a pipe stretcher for joining copper pipe (what I been using) it tends to ruin the detail inside the ring but I've had some good results with some electrical tape on it before the stretching process. keep up the great work very informative ☺

Hey, I appreciate your videos, they are quite helpful. I noticed when you drill holes in the coins you don't de-bur the hole. In the aircraft sheet metal industry we do that as general practice to reduce cracking while bending. Just figured I'd share that. Thanks!
@CoinRingsfromTheMint
@CoinRingsfromTheMint 8 жыл бұрын
+Tony G Yes I started doing it recently. I never did at first because I always use the punched side on the outside of the ring. It doesn't have the burr on that side. I always de burred it just before stretching it. The thought behind that was it was the most stressful time in the process.

ok, i think your rings look real cool, but at the same time (as a coin collector) it makes me sad to see a part of history altered in such a way. for example i have a silver coin minted from England it is very old and marks a special time in history (it was actually there and used as currency). if it was made into a ring...well maybe you see my point. to some it changes the historical value, but other people are far removed from such romantic notions as mine.
@catspaw3760

Well, I checked with the United States mint: And it is legal for him to make coin rings out of morgan dollars as long as he doesn’t try to use or claim it as U S currency once it has been altered, that would be considered fraud. Before a coin is altered (even though it is old) it is still considered legal tender, but it is only worth face value, even though it’s worth more due to the amount of silver in the coin; if i am right. gee, money use so be worth something back in the day. now they just mint metal slugs and assign a value to them. ???

As a customer who had Skyler make me three rings out of silver dimes I can tell you he is awesome! I don't know if you were using these techniques when you did those, but they came out perfect. I'm glad you take your time and know how to do it right. It's no big deal screwing up a quarter that has no real value, but when someone sends you proof coins with very specific dates, it isn't as easy to correct a mistake. Or when you are making something out of a really hard to find or rare currency. Anyway, you are awesome and I hope you keep making videos like this. It is absolutely fascinating to watch you do this stuff. I still have no idea how you got those dimes done without destroying them. They will be something my wife will wear around forever, I'll tell you that much. Same with the other coins you did for me. One thing that would be cool is if you have any tips for how to seal the coin so it doesn't turn your finger green when you wear it. Since most of a US coin is copper or nickle or zinc, they tend to turn your finger green when wearing it. I've tried using clear coat sprayed on them, but that chips off after awhile. Same with fingernail polish and any other kind of paint. I recently applied a ceramic sealant used on automobiles and that seemed to work really well for the 1976 quarter I wear daily, but even that started to wear off after four or five months. I'd love to know if you have any suggestions for other ways to seal the coin.
@CoinRingsfromTheMint
@CoinRingsfromTheMint 7 жыл бұрын
+Anthony Marc Thanks! You pretty much mentioned all the ways I know how to seal a coin. The only other one there is is clear powder coat but it will work about the same as the automobile sealant.
@ocdetails
@ocdetails 7 жыл бұрын
That's true. My boss is really into getting a ceramic powder coat done to engine parts under the hood of his show car. It keeps the aluminum and steel from oxidizing and ever needing polishing again. Kind of a spendy process for a ring, but I suppose that would work too. The ceramic coating I've used seems to be doing the trick without the expense and hassle of finding a powder coater who will work on such small pieces, so I think I'll stick with that. I'm using Pinnacle Black Label ceramic coatings, if anybody is curious. It is advertised to last up to 3 years on automobile paint, so I imagine I should get good durability out of it on a ring. :)

It can't be much worse than what the government has been doing to our money for the past 50 years. 98% or more of US dollar's spending power has been destroyed. Even after punching a hole in the coin and filing away material there is more than 2% of it left, right? And come to think of it, it increases the value of the coin, as work has gone into it to make it a finished piece of jewelry... It is the complete opposite of devaluing money !

You don't need an "expensive ring stretching rig" but you do need to buy a set of dyes and mandrils for 60$ and a 100$ shop press..... Fabulous, so "cheap"
@CoinRingsfromTheMint
@CoinRingsfromTheMint 7 жыл бұрын
+daynan palmer This wasn't meant to be pvc pipe and mallet cheap. This was meant for the person who actually wants to get into coin ring making but doesn't want to lay out the cash for a ring stretcher yet. But that person obviously isn't you. So why continue to watch?

Don't quote me, but I think U.S. law states that it is illegal to deface, change, or otherwise destroy federally minted coins/cash ONLY if it is intended for the purpose of changing it's value. like if you wanted to make a quarter look like a dollar coin.
