In this week's hottest collab, Patrick Adair and The Waterjet Channel join together to design a ring made from a 5 million year old pure Siberian mammoth tooth cut open by the waterjet. This ring also features a carbon fiber liner. Combining an ancient Siberian mammoth tooth with carbon fiber created a truly unique ring.

Sent you an email for a request on madrels. But commenting to point out something i keep seeing on the lathe. Is your mandrel warped? At first i figured the teeth may be bowed but that wouldnt make sense considering its also made on a lathe. When you were using the depth gauge, i couldnt help but wonder if a lot of what you were seeing was from a wapred mandrel or perhaps one that wasnt sitting right in the chuck. This is something i see on a lot of the videos. It shows up when you do slow motion shots. Looks to be a fraction of an inch of wobble but if you correct for it and its the mandrel thats actually bent, youre still gonna end up with an offset thickness in the ring.

When I’ve worked with mammoth tooth and ivory in the past I ALWAYS use a backer for the front AND back before I do any drilling or shaping. It can be something as simple as a piece of card stock glued to both the front and back faces, or even painters tape.... A thin front and back lamination may have given you enough stability in your drilling process. I Enjoy your videos, sorry you had some issues… I come from a background of exotic materials specifically used in the gun knife and Jewelry Industries. I’ve seen it all, from hundreds of pounds of superconductor (enough to fill several large flat rate boxes) to a dozen full length mammoth teeth being sawn and stabilized into scales for resale. So I completely understand your strugles, That material can be such a pain! You do Great work!

I wish you did this with some petrified wood as the liner instead of carbon fiber. Or any kind of wood...like the bog wood or something. Just to keep it natural and go with the theme. But either way really cool...and it A+ for keeping with it! I bet you wish you had the water channel cut out the blanks again!

Let me give you a really good tip for attaching things using super glue like this. I have to do it with small wood pieces all the time. You only need one other thing: blue painters tape. Here is what you do: Stick a couple strips of painters tape next to one another on your scrap board. Next cover the bottom of your workpeice with painters tape. Next glue the two tape covered surfaces together. It will hold very well When you are all done you just peel off the tape, no fuss with trying to fix anything.

I love (LOVE!!) your videos and I really think your editor is adding a lot of value to your videos without making them feel like something that I didn't subscribe for, so really good job! Your work itself is, I don't think I don't even need to point that out but I will anyways, so great, that I really wish I could afford a ring of yours =D Just the intro itself, and not even the visuals or even music choice, just the sheer volume of it .. it's too much, I feel. It makes my speakers (or headphones) distort because it's just SO massive, wish you'd tune it down a bit, but don't change any other part of your video formula

@corelockout6293

Please don't take this negatively, I mean it to be constructive. You have beautiful work and, maybe it's just an optical illusion, maybe it's real. But as I'm watching you run the dial indicator for concentricity it looks like the mandrel is out of alignment. If there is deflection in your mandrel when you check it and mark the high spots, you're taking the ring further out of concentricity. I'm sure it doesn't matter in this case since you hand sanded it afterwords, but just as a note, your ring will only be as concentric as your mandrel is straight. As a further side note, I wouldn't put your lathe mandrel in an arbor press. get a steel dowel or another mandrel for that. Always keep precision tooling away from non-precision work. Keep up the good work though. I love all the work you've done in the past and I look forward to new beautiful projects! (sorry for the novel...)

+Patrick Adair Designs Always coming up with something new and cool bro. Hey question for you. I was told there are a couple "desktop water jets" now available capable of cutting steel making them more affordable now and was wondering if you have one in mind for us to check out? It would need to be strong enough to cut through materials we use like tugsten, titianium, iron, etc but have you looked into what the most affordable water jet might be that would fit in the common home work shop?

Using carbide bits on soft material isn't advised dude, if that's a HSS insert correct me, but using a HSS blank and sharpening properly will give you a MUCH smother cut on your lathe. Also dial indicator "needle" is actually called a probe.

Wouldn’t flipping the mammoth tooth over and doing a light cut to score the bottom help avoid tear out? Also, what’s the longevity on these CA glue inlays? I’ve had issues with yellowing with UV exposure and also weakening over time on unrelated projects, using CA glue. Any reason why you don’t use an epoxy?
@chrislepageful
@chrislepageful 6 жыл бұрын
Hi buddy, I was just curious as why you were using the dial at around 7 minutes in. Your ring fixture is wobbling in the chuck. My suggestion would be to use the dial after you put your ring fixture in the chuck. That way whatever you machine will be precisely machined.
@Rich77UK

I used to cut ceramic "pucks" like this (for RF R&D where i used to work) and to hold the ceramic in place we used a sturdy jewellers wax. Works better than CA glue.

Hey patrick the ring turned out nice but about the tooth cutting part i have a suggetion for you . Diamond tools dont need alot of force to do the job looking at the video i notice the water was drying out fast and you can see some smoke .the problem is you're forceing the tool instead of letting it do the work . Next time just try less force and it should be fine . Good job overall .

I don't know if you did this already, but with all these glowing things you could have made The Ring from LOTR, that would shine orange or red from the inside through an opaque film or layer with elvish script punctured in it. I bet a lot of people would want that.

I’m wondering why you don’t freeze the carbon fiber inserts before fitting them. They will slightly shrink when cold. Then expand and fit tighter when back at room temperature. Maybe not a great idea for this ring since it’s prone to cracking but all the other ones you have done I’m sure it would work well.
@rwhite9994
@rwhite9994 5 жыл бұрын
Wanted to give a heads up on how to cut that out with better success. Gather some foam core with adhesive back: use the good kind that will not release with light mineral oil. Sandwhich the mamoth, wood, bone, etc between it, cut the first part out- appling lubricant just as you normally would. After the first part is cut out- inspect the sides for possible cracks- which would be rare. Next wipe the top of the foam core with degreaser, cleaning well and apply another clean piece of foam core on top. Clamp it all down- Cut the last. Not only does this greatly reduce vibration, and that tear out violence you mentioned but the over all pressure from your drill press clamps is evenly spread out. May not make good TV, but you can then pull the foam core aparts on each side and gently sand off or use adhesive remover to get your ring cut out free. You can also use plasticore, wood, etc but foam core works just fine.

Is the tooth like partially fossilized? When you cut into it, the amount of dust and the color of it looks like natural tooth. But then it also looks heavily mineralized in parts. So I'm wondering if it is just a partially fossilized tooth?

If you slow your drill speed down and use a diamond grit hole saw you will not have so many breakages when drilling hard/fragile materials. You can also use some drill lube instead of water. You do great work, but trying this may save you some time and material cost.
