In this episode I wanted to share a tip I've used for the past 20 years to keep my paperback study Bibles protected and in good shape. It's not fancy...it's not aesthetic...it's not "premium"...but it saves money and works!

Great idea, thanks! I should do this with some paperback regular books I have. I used to put Scotch tape on the edges. Not recommended. It gets yellow, sticks only in parts, and you can't remove it without destroying the book. Then I started using that clear packing tape. A little better, but still the same issue after a few years. This might be better because it's covering the entire surface not just the edges. Nobody should be mocking this. Few people are rich enough to get those premiums. I'd never even heard of such a thing until I somehow came across them here on KZbin, really just a few years ago. At first I was naive. I assumed people saved up for years so they could have one to pass down to their children/grandchildren. Or perhaps for a pastor, since they are using them so heavily. Then I started seeing people boasting about how they "collect" them. There's no way people are reading all those Bibles. I saw one person say they bought one and it sits on their shelf because it's too pretty to use. I had to fight my fingers not to type a response. The latest one I've seen costs more than $300.00. It's really become obscene.

I've been using clear adhesive vinyl ("Contact" paper) for decades on paperback books, and some hard back books, too. For some books and Bibles, I first cover them with (inexpensive) gift wrap before I cover it with the clear vinyl.

I just picked up a couple of older study bibles from Goodwill for under $2 each. Since they are paperbacks. I am going to do this. Thank you for this excellent idea.

There is a “middle ground” approach to purchasing a reasonably priced study bible. Here in the UK I was looking to purchase a new leather bound Zondervan NASB study bible. I could have easily paid around £100 ($127) for a supple goat skin bound edition. The same edition in “bonded” leather would have set me back £50 new. I completed a search online and was lucky enough to come across the latter, in unused, “as new” condition; from an online charity store for £25 including postage. Although the bible isn’t covered in a premium, soft leather hide; nevertheless, it’s soft enough to be able to open the bible flat whilst studying. For me it’s a great comprise of cost vs quality.

As someone who loves premium bibles, there's just something about cheaper editions that speaks to me so much more! It's fun to see how others find ways to make their cheaper editions last as long as possible

The contact paper is a pretty good idea! Thanks! I have my first ever that needs fixed but not willing to pay that price to have it done professionally.

Great idea to do this before using the Bible. I repaired the spine on my beat-up old NIV hardcover with clear packaging tape. 🙂

Thanks for this tip. I have crocheted covers (they feel like a warm, fuzzy comfort blanket) and I have sewn stitched covers, which are neat to use, and for a really fast cover on the run, this is a great idea. ❤ i have a few favorite paperbacks, books I will give this a try.

I've just found a video showing how to create a hardback cover. So I'm going to try that out for the paperback Bibles I use most often, & also this sticky back plastic for those I don't use as often, I should really do that when I first get them. I cannot pass a book stall which has any Bibles on without buying them, I also pray for those who had them & ponder on how they have ended up being left on a shelf. I've also got Bibles from elderly friends who have died, their family thought I'd like them. Which of course I do.

Awesome. Now the problem is to find a paperback Bible that fits that size of contact paper. 😱😂

Next time use a debit/credit card to push while installing. It will be a lot easier and help getting the bubbles out.

This is one of the most useful things I learned from my highschool library job. How to protect books. Not only for my own books but my kids read books until they fall apart.

Great idea - thanks. I bought ribbons already to stick in the back of a Bible, for hardbound bibles. I think they could be modified to work with this cost effective cover idea, so you would have ribbons too. Or they could just be put under the plastic cover of the spine. Maybe tape them in place ahead of time.

In india we call that Gelatin instead of vinyl or anything, and the process is Lamination. Shops does that work easily, we never do these kinda works.

This is great. I really want to try this. This would also be fantastic for my other paperbacks that I want to preserve for posterity. Will this also reinforce the spine as well? This has always been my current complaint with paperbacks. They just get really worn down.
@DiscipleDojo
@DiscipleDojo Жыл бұрын
Yes, though with paperbacks if you crease or roll the spines when opening them they will still wear out because they are usually glued, not sewn.

A good idea but it won't prevent the bible from tearing out pages. The book should be Smyth-sewn, anyway.
