Good review. I'm a Catholic who has had this study Bible for a few years. I must have bought it when it was about to go out of print because my local used bookstore was offering several new copies at a bargain-basement price and I snapped one up. The background material it provides is just priceless. One thing I like about it (one thing out of many) is the maps section. The maps in the back are of good quality, on helpful periods of biblical history, and are about twice the number of your average Bible. The translation isn't an issue for me since I just read it for the notes, articles, and other study aides. It isn't my primary study Bible (that would be the Ignatius Catholic Study Bible that was recently reviewed here), but the ASB is a great supplementary resource for me.

I found mine on Facebook marketplace that was personalized for a person named Frederick, which is my son's name. I pray that one day I can pass it down to him. The layout is the best of any study bible that I have ever held. My guess is it was very expensive to make, and the demand just wasn't enough to recoup the cost. I pray that with your influence, Zondervan will finally take notice and make a second edition.

@@BiblicalTeachings said the bonded leather Bible he has is not well made. If you google the terms "bible rebinding leather", you can find dozens of companies that will rebind books with a new binding of hardback or (usually) fine leather. Many book binders will do this, letting you choose type of leather, color, flaps, edging, and even inserting blank pages at the end. This may be worth it to you.

I just received my copy of this fantastic study Bible with a Renaissance Fine Leather binding that I found on EBay. It is in Like New condition. It made me want to seek one out; and yes, I plan to write to the folks at Zondervan in hopes of increasing their willingness to bring it back. I paused the screen so I could read the pages you were critiquing as you went. I agree that the scholarship as far as I can tell, is both balanced and excellent. How did I not know about this Bible? In trying to correct that, the ones I've seen available on E-Bay etc. thus far are all in the NIV translation. You mentioned that it was also printed in the KJV, which I prefer. Hoping to find one. In Gr there are so many Christian thrift stores that the Bibles are usually free, because so many retired pastors give their libraries away or their widows do. Most of my pocket Greek NT's are outdated Nestle Aland that cost $5 from the store. My wife loves to hit the thrift stores for clothes for work, and I always come away with a new Bible. Kind booksellers who attended the same Bible study group I did selected a study Bible for me, a new Christian. Their choice was the NASB New Open Bible. This was in 1983. I have since purchased at least five, possibly more New Open Bibles in both NASB and KJV. I tend to wear bibles out so I have to “retire” my favs and begin a new one. I’ve bought them on Amazon, EBay and with thrift booksellers. I’ve been less than thrilled with the newer iterations of the NASB so I’ve finally just settled with the KJV, with which I am delighted.

Great video as always. I bought mine years ago and gave one to my son at the time who was a teenager and he loved it. I think why it didn’t take off like maybe it should have is because of the commentary notes. Most people look for explanation of the text more so than detailed background. It’s also not devotional and that can be a big thing for many readers too. I like it but do you think that maybe it’s not in print because a good Bible encyclopedia or dictionary can provide similar information? Don’t get me wrong I personally think it’s a great Bible but I wonder if some of the factors I mention work against it. I would hope they bring it back. I would buy another updated one. Again great video and keep up the good work.

Yes, a good Bible dictionary and encyclopedia would offer similar results but for most layman, the task of learning to navigate them is great. And that doesn't include the cost of buying those tools weather physical or digital (also the fear of buying something you won't use). Even for myself as a Bible college student, I'd recommend this to anyone and own it myself.

That is one of my favorites. Back then, I was falling for the revised Egyptian chronology of David Down, but now I lean more towards Andrew Steinmann's chronology, which predominantly agrees with the Old Chronology with a few evidence based differences (like the early Exodus view which agrees more with the Bible's chronology). Anyway, I'd find myself in greater agreement with the Archaeological Study Bible today than I did back when this study Bible was still new.

My goal this year was to begin to read the Bible and explore it in-depth, specifically including the history. I spent several months trying to figure out what the best translation would be for me as my first Bible purchase (aside from the King James version I had when I was young). I saw one of your other videos a couple weeks ago when you were reviewing study bibles, and I just happened on this video today. I'd been trying to find this Study Bible on Amazon, Ebay, & other book stores around my area and online for a couple weeks. Sadly, I can't afford it at the prices on the secondary market. This is very unfortunate because I believe this would be the best Bible for me by far, based on my needs. I can't imagine I'm the only one in this situation. I did go ahead and purchase your second recommendation from Amazon last week, but I will continue to keep my eye out for this Bible too and plan to pick it up if I can find it at a good price. By any chance, can you tell me if the historical content & notes in the NIV version are the same in the King James version?

I think a lot (but not all).of the scholars involved are or at least used to be from Gordon-Conwell, which is an awesome seminary, so you know you're getting a solid foundation behind the study Bible. I got this study Bible years ago before it went out of print. I also have an ebook of it which I don't know if that's still available to purchase or not. In any case, hopefully this video will help Zondervan reconsider republishing it. Like your video for the CSB Baker Illustrated Study Bible is making Baker reconsider their study Bible. Ultimately I suppose it comes down to whether Zondervan thinks there's a market for it, i.e., whether they not only can recoup their investments in republication but also make a tidy little profit. (I don't think it's wrong for Zondervan to want to make a profit. A worker deserves their wages, etc.) If Zondervan does reconsider republishing the NIV Archaeological Study Bible, I hope they'll update it a little bit. Presumably they will move from the NIV 1984 to the NIV 2011. Also redesign it for a more modern look. And perhaps retitle it. I don't think it's solely focused on archaeology. There's a lot more to it than just archaeology. Maybe rebrand it as something broader than "Archaeological"? Maybe something like the NIV Deep Dig Study Bible (or Dig Deep) if they want to stay with the archaeology theme. Anyway, something else, because I think saying it's archaeology might limit its appeal to those interested in archaeology, anthropology, and history, but I think there's a lot more to the study Bible and it deserves a broader reach. 😊

I agree. The title is unwieldy and off-putting to general readers. A rebrand (like they did with the Biblical Theology SB) would be very welcome.

The digital version is still available on Olive Tree I believe. I managed to get one hard copy second hand.

Have you seen the "Zondervan Handbook of Biblical Archaeology: A Book by Book Guide to Archaeological Discoveries Related to the Bible"? It was published in 2017 and is still in print. I wonder if it might be the updated version of the notes, articles and pictures you like in this study Bible.

I have not. That would be cool...but I still think they need to bring this one back.

@@DiscipleDojo Yes, that and the Baker Study Bible! Thank you so much for all the wonderful videos: they are the unearthly food I needed as an aspiring brown-belt Bible student. (As a martial arts enthusiast and assistant teacher, as well as a comic book and anime nerd, I also love the references and the toys in the background!) I stumbled on your channel yesterday as I was trying to decide whether I should get the Oxford Annotated Bible or the Jewish Study Bible. I think you can guess what I picked. I have just spent 12 hours watching your reviews and I have to fight the urge to watch the superhero seminary right away. I think your Bible & Science course will be a perfect Lent addition to my Bible reading plan. If your Grownup's Table is also open to Catholic ladies who live across the border, I am interested.

I have this Bible too. NIV Archaeological Study Bible. Personal Size, Italian Duo-tone, Dark Chocolate/Toffee. The font is a bit small but ok it's still readable for me.
