I am just getting into jewelery making and silversmithing and all I've learned has been from you. Your videos are so helpful and informative. Its something I would like to take up as a career and not just a hobby and have no idea where to start since there aren't any schools around me for that. I'm very interested in learning lapidary although I have zero experience. Thank you for taking the time to show others your craft. Your work is beautiful. :)

@TheArtOfMetalsmithing6 жыл бұрын
Thank you so much! :) It takes practice but to be honest most helpful thing I've learned that changed the whole sawing game for me was to get use to using less tension and actually cutting really lightly. Almost like only guiding the saw in the right direction and letting it to the whole work. Using the whole space on a sawblade helps too and motion that comes from the elbow, rather than the wrist. I'm happy you like the pendant! :)) Good luck with your craft!

Oh Basia, you will never know how much this video means to me. i have still to get going with my first project because i am slowly building up my tools to get started. As i have very little money due to being disabled this is taking some time, but i will get there. I really had no idea how to get started but this video is going to give me everything i need to do just that, both in the technique of how to do it and the tools i am going to need. Could i please ask what type of hammer that is that you use to texture the pendant, is it a special texturing hammer? From the bottom of my heart i thank you for your kind and selfless nature in giving away your knowledge and time in this way. Peace.
@TheArtOfMetalsmithing6 жыл бұрын
Hi Andy, thank you so much for your lovely comment and as always, for your enormous support! :)) I'm so happy this video could help a little and it means the world to me that you feel this way. And I know the struggle with money well, silversmithing isn't the cheapest technique. But you'll get there, slowly but surely with the most basic and important tools, just like I did :) Those listed in this video are actually the ones I use the most and for many other projects (with some additions that aren't absolutley necessary), you'll see in next tutorials. That little hammer is a jobbing mini hammer, it's on Amazon, called "Hobby Hammer with 6 Interchangable Heads" for about 6 pounds now (it used to be much cheaper but the supplier I got it from doesn't have it at the moment), so I would actually get a better quality, larger jobbing hammer at this point. Second hammer that I used is just a regular, large ball peen hammer. Hope that helps! :) Have a wonderful weekend!

Hello, once again, thank you so much for your amazing videos! I have a question about overheating the metal - when does the metal overheat? And what are the consequences of this? Thanks so much!
@TheArtOfMetalsmithing5 жыл бұрын
Different metals have different melting temperature and you can tell when they start to rech it by thir colour. Usually dull red is pretty hot. When it starts to get glowing red and shiny, you're melting. Consequences of overheating are - risk of melting, getting copper up on the surface and firescale (lots of cleaning and sanding afretwards). It's better not to overheat :)

Totally new to this, but just wondering why you use files, Emery sticks and sand paper? Do you have to use all three? Or is that just the order in grit? (Ruffest to softest)
@TheArtOfMetalsmithing5 жыл бұрын
Usually, the amount of different cleaning/abrasive/polishing tools depend on your personal preferences, on the surface (and how many scratches it has), and the desired finish. Here I wanted to clean, sand and pre-polish the piece properly, making sure I'm removing the scratches. Bigger files can be used to cleaning jobs, smooting the edges and preparing the surface for sanding. I've used both emery sticks and sand paper for sanding and pre-polishing, because of two reasons: - you're gripping them differently, so sometimes the paper will be more comfortable, sometimes the stick - I didn't have all of the grades in sticks, so I've used the paper You use them according to their grades, from coarse to fine. So for example from 120, 240, 320, 400, 500, 600, 800, 1000, 1200 etc. I hope that helps! :)

Hi, Barbara! Nice work! I've got a couple advises for you: 1) use self-adhesive sticker printer paper instead ordinary paper and double-sided tape (and if it's necessary, use sticker remover spray for cleaning after that); 2) I think it's would be better to make texture after soldering 'cause cold deformation does the final product harder, it's possible using a lead plate or a Thermo-Loc layer as a saddle.
@user-pd7cq6666 жыл бұрын
P.S. And one advise else: there is an attachment for using sandpaper strips with Dremel named Slotted Mandrel 1/8" Shank. It's not Dremel trademark accessory, but it can be used with this tool.
@TheArtOfMetalsmithing6 жыл бұрын
Hi! Sorry, I haven't seen your comment before! I know about the self adhesive sticker paper but I prefer double sided tape simply because I never have to clean after it, whereas in other case a sticker remover might be necessary (extra purchase and work). But it's a good alternative! As for the texturing, I wouldn't do it after soldering as the surface isn't flat anymore and I wouldn't want to bend it, that's why I prefer to hammer on a flat surface and then maybe finish after jump ring is soldered :) With this size/type of join hammering didn't really matter in soldering in this case. As for the attachement for sandpaper, sounds interesting, I think I will get it in the near future. This was meant to be an easy project for those who own only the most basic tools (even a rotary tool was an extra that I didn't list in the beginning). But thanks for mentioning as it might be useful to someone interested! :)
@user-pd7cq6666 жыл бұрын
So, I agree that sticker remover is a bit expensive. But not all marks of self-adhesive paper require it. The problem is to find the right paper. And I recently found out another solution. I have not tried it yet, but I have already ordered a new kind of paper. It is circuit board thermal transfer paper. This paper is designed for the transferring of the laser printer toner layer to the metal surface using ordinary smoothing-iron. The toner can be removed using acetone which is a lot cheaper and works faster than sticker remover. Furthermore, it is possible to make masks for chemical or galvanic etching with this paper. I going to try strong orthophosphoric acid solution (this acid is sold in many hardware stores as rust remover) with DC source. As for the hammering, it is possible for things of not flat shapes using a piece of lead. This metal is soft and can be easily shaped as you need with a bit heavier hammer than you going to use for texturing. Use it as an anvil when you need. And a few words about Dremel drill. This tool is a relatively cheap and compact alternative for the professional jewelry drills like Foredom etc. But the Dremel company marketing behavior is intended for maximizing the profit by the expensive supplies selling. They don't produce the slotted mandrel for sandpaper strips 'cause it's better for them to sell a lot of flapwheels for polishing instead it. The good news is that there is a lot of Foredom accessories that are fully compatible with Dremel and you can buy them. Or you can make the slotted mandrel yourself if you have spare rotary tool mandrel. Just use your Dremel drill with another rotary tool mandrel and the thinnest cutting wheel that you have :)

@TheArtOfMetalsmithing3 жыл бұрын
yeah, unfortunately that's the downside of metalsmithing, the tools and materials are quite costly, even if it's only a basic set. Because the thing is, even if you don't need all of the tools all at once and downsize a bit, that basic set still requires a decent amanout of tools, and the prices add up. I hope that you will be able to try it out one day 🌞

"...for beginners" * proceeds to take out 20+ materials needed *
@TheArtOfMetalsmithing4 жыл бұрын
well, it is a craft that requires certain tools :) And as with all different techniques, there are basic, beginner techniques. Beginner doesn't mean that you will only need a couple of tools or household items to achieve something. For that you could turn to drawing or beading jewelry. With metalsmithing tools are necessary. And there's quite a lot needed, can't escape it. I didn't make these up lol
