Wonderful tutorial. I'm learning so much from you and am really getting close to buying tools! I was wondering if you ever watch Andrew Berry? He's also a great teacher, who goes nice and slow and explains everything he's doing. How do you film what's right in front of you and so close? Do you use a "GoPro?" Just curious. I think I'm going to read the book you suggested, "The Slight Edge," to give me that final push I need to start a little jewelry making practice! Thanks again for taking all this time out to teach the rest of us from your own learning adventure! I really appreciate it! Caroline U.S.A

Gorgeous pendant and video 💕 I've been wondering about those fancy bezel strips...the ones I've seen seem to be too high for most of the stones I have and there's no way of sanding them down enough. Where do you get yours? And if you know of any EU websites, even better! Lol

The pendant is lovely but how would you do that without creating a double spike so close together? Where the gallery wire was joined, the pattern was off and two of the prongs were right next to each other. Is there a way to prevent that so the design is even?
@stephencoster9532
@stephencoster9532 3 жыл бұрын
Yes, measure the wire then mark it where you want it to be cut to make the pattern match, don't move too far. Solder it then put on a mandrel and hit with a hide or plastic mallet till it fits. You have to keep re-shaping it, hit, shape as teardrop, measure, make round, hit... It's slow and you can not change the shape more than about 1 to 2 sizes. Steve...

Hi Basia. I’m struggling w getting my bezels even/straight. Especially the rings. I see that you just eyeballed it? I have a bail centering tool but that only tells me the middle of the pendant/backplate. I’ve still managed to put the large jump ring or circle on crooked! Help?

Dear Barbara, that's really nice work! And it's amazing how you soldered the massy pendant using a micro flame torch! I have seen how it was difficult for you from 3:45 in this video - you had to do it in three sets working at the limit of what the torch is capable of! As you remember, I advised you to buy the Termet GLT-3 torch in Poland now and keep it for the future works if you haven't an opportunity to hold a propane cylinder in your workplace at the present time. So, if you did it I have good news for you! Especially for you and your subscribers I tried to feed this torch by butane from cheap portable gas bottle canister. And it works! The small and middle tips work as well as with propane from my gas cylinder and its big tip only doesn't work at its full power. But as the big tip is designed for metal melting, its inefficiency does not matter in this case. You can see how I made it here: instagram.com/p/Bk7X6Fkhu6g/?taken-by=i.yu.svirid I have used three elements for the torch connecting: a hose gas fitting with 21.8 LH thread, a part of the cheap butane gas blow torch (this model: www.amazon.co.uk/Butane-Flamethrower-Burner-Camping-Welding/dp/B078KT23LV/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1531012060&sr=8-2&keywords=gas+torch ) and a piece of gas hose with two clamps. The fitting is a part of the MAPP and propane gas cartridges connection kit for my another torch - the Profgorelka GP-2 (you can see it on my Instagram too), but you can make fitting like this out of the 21.8 LH to M12 fitting (you can buy it here: www.gasit.co.uk/21-8-lh-male-to-m12-male-fitting.html ). Just whittle away M12 thread by file to get a smooth cylindric surface on it. For preparation the butane blow torch as a gas connector I wrenched off its tip and wrested a small inner nozzle from the torch's pipe by pliers. As it was possible for me to use a gas hose with 6 mm inner diameter with my fitting, I put the hose directly on the pipe which outer diameter is 6.5 mm. But 'cause you'll get the fitting with an outer diameter about 10 mm for the hose connection, I suggest to return the tip on its place after the nozzle removing (use the thread sealant on this step!) and then cut off its wide front part using your jewelry saw. The outer diameter of the tip's back part is 10 mm and it's ideal for using a hose with 9 mm inner diameter. Put ends of the hose on fitting and blowtorch part, tighten the clamps, connect it to the gas canister and jewelry torch, do the soapy water solution test to avoid gas leakage missing and enjoy!

Thanks so much for such a thorough and detailed info and advice, I'm sure it will be very useful for others :) As for my torch, it's very powerful, you'd be surprised! I didn't struggle :) I always start heating up the piece very gently to avoid flux bubbling too violently and rapidly because the solder pieces might jump away (and that adds extra work to bring them and place back). After they stick to the surface, I continue to heat the piece gently so when the flux builds up and lifts the bazel strip, it won't move around. Only after the bazel strip comes down again and sticks to the surface I use thole flame and from that point soldering is quick and clean :) I don't need it fast, I like it perfect.

@TheArtOfMetalsmithing
@TheArtOfMetalsmithing 5 жыл бұрын
Of course! I use smooth paper to catch the dust and any smaller pieces, and then, at the end of each day, I use a wide paint brush to put it into the bag. I collect every tiniest piece of scrap and dust and send it off for recycling :) Since I've changed my bench recently, I was able to cut out the curve and will attach the skin that will help me collect it all much easier. The video will be on my channel in about 2 weeks :)

Ah, I see! Thanks so much for that :)) So I don't actually tumble pieces like the one in the video - I don't need to. It's not fragile to require work hardening and for polishing I use hand rotary tool :) I did however tumble my large ring with labradorite once - as an experiment - and I know that I won't do it again. The stone was left with scratches, so unless it is a very hard stone (like quartz) I wouldn't recommend putting stones in the tumbler! :)

Hi Andy, I'm so happy you're here and that you stay persistent and keep thinking of getting to the point where you will be able to do silversmithing, I'm sure that slowly but surely you will get there! Don't give up and stay positive :) Thank you so much for your support!

Hi Andy , I know what you mean. Im starting with little bits of base metal and you can get some cool results with just a saw ,a vice , a hammer and sandpaper! I use anything I can get my hands on to practice my technique. eg coins , old costume jewellery, little cheap bits from the plumbing section they are made from brass and copper. Best wishes

Hello Wabi sabi, what a fantastic idea for getting your skills down without wasting expensive metals like silver etc. Thank you so much for taking the time to offer your thoughts and ideas, i had not thought about using cheaper materials to practice with. Take care.

That's an awesome idea Wabi sabi! Thanks so much for sharing. Oh definitely starting with cheaper metals is a great idea! Brass and copper for sure. And soldering isn't required in the beginning, you can master sawing, shaping and making patterns first :) Stones could be set in wires. That's definitely worth trying and then, when you can move on to silver, you'll feel much more confident. Thank you!

Does the flux create harmful fumes, and do you need a fume extractor?
@TheArtOfMetalsmithing
@TheArtOfMetalsmithing 5 жыл бұрын
Yes, you have to assume that flux creates toxic fumes (it's a chemical after all), but definitely does solder. So protective mask, well ventilated room and/or fume extractor are a must!

Hi :) It is a borax cone that I use with water and create flux in the dish. Then I use regular silver solder stripe (medium or easy). Hope that helps!

Stardust Mine Jewellery could you do it with only one soldier though?
@TheArtOfMetalsmithing
@TheArtOfMetalsmithing 5 жыл бұрын
You can try! But have to be careful when heating up the metal. The reason you would use different solder is because of its melting points. Hard solder has higher point, easy has lover. So after some joins are soldered with hard solder, then it's safe to solder additional elements on with easy solder without melting other joins. I'd recommend getting an easy solder, it might save your work! But at the same time you can experiment too :)
