Love this flannel quilt. Great for a baby as well in a smaller size. I think it would be helpful if you had mentioned at the beginning that although you were using 10" squares for the pinwheels, the resulting block is 12 1/2" so the backing fabric needs to be cut into squares of that size.

Erica, you are amazing. Honestly, Ive never ever sewn in my life.Id never even set a sewing machine up. Im now 57, found your rag quilt and I made it.Youve now got me on a whole journey of wanting to learn to sew, and quilting is what I really want to do. I love love love this pinwheel quilt, so it will be my next to try. I have 1 question, would it be possible to teach us how to make a pillow case, so we can match it with our quilts. It doesn't have to be a rag pillow, but Ive never made one and I'd love to make one to match my beautiful quilt. I made a few mistakes, but I got there and even though its not perfect, I absolutely love it. Thanks for everything you do. I love your channel so much xxx

I have a pair of round head spring style Fiskars scissors. So when I did my small squares one, I could go straight to the seam without worrying about cutting the seam. I saw a video that said to completely make each square and then cut the fringe. I tried it and it was a mess when sewing them together. But I did cut it when I sewed 2 rows together. That way I didn't have to do all the rows at the end. I just had the vertical rows and the outside edge to fringe. It saved time and pain on my hands.

I have the Accuquilt GO die for rag quilting. I wonder if I create the pinwheel, I could then cut on the Accuquilt? But if the finished book is 12.5 and the dies is 8.5 maybe not. Have to think about this. I just hate cutting the fringe.

Hi love your work but how do you keep your ruler from moving when you are cutting fabric i have trouble with that,
@erica_arndt2 жыл бұрын
I use Creative Grids rulers which have little tacky dots on the backs to help with slipping. If you don't have that brand, you can purchase the little sticky dots like these amzn.to/3LSuLD0 and add them to your ruler.

Hi Erica, question: why do you sixe down the inner piece of sandwich , batting or fleece on the pinwheel rag quilt but use the same size inner piece on the fisrt tutorial rag quilt? Thank you for answering this question, maggie
@erica_arndt6 жыл бұрын
You don't have to they can all be the same size if you prefer. But I made the batting smaller on this one because it was all flannel and when you sew the rows together you have four layers of flannel which can be quite thick, so I didn't want two more layers of batting in there as well. But you can do it however you prefer :)
@margaretbarnes78216 жыл бұрын
Erica Arndt thank you, of course, that makes good sense.

That was great! I made a crib size rag quilt out of flannel on the front and minky on the back. It was really hard to get through and I was using a quilting foot. Any suggestions on how to get a better outcome? I'm having to go back through it because it has all shifted a bit. Help?!
@erica_arndt5 жыл бұрын
I would try spray basting with 505, it helps keep the fabric from shifting. Another thing that can help is to put the flannel down towards your feed dogs and the minky up towards your presser foot. It's smoother and can help the minky slide better :) Hope that helps!

@erica_arndt2 жыл бұрын
When you sew the pinwheels together they end up at 12-1/2" square :)

Pinwheels can spin left or right. If you make them all face the same direction then you will not get large triangles of white or two colours against each other.

Make sure to read the instructions...I didn't, and cut all my squares (backing, batting, pinwheels) all 10". When my pinwheels were done, they ended up being 12.5" square, 2.5" too big for the 10" backing fabric. So I had to trim them down quite a bit.

@erica_arndt4 жыл бұрын
Hi, Yes you can use whatever fabric you like! :) For my original rag quilt I actually broke all of the rules and mixed quilting cotton, minky, and flannel in the same quilt and it's fabulous!

If I use fabric by the yard, how much would I need to purchase to make this quilt?
@erica_arndt2 жыл бұрын
You need (42) 10" squares, so it depends on how much variety you would like to have in your quilt. Since I used a layer cake I had several different prints. That said, you can get about 12 squares for each yard of fabric.
@lorrainemcneil2 жыл бұрын
Hi Erica. Im still plodding along making this pinwheel quilt. I just wondered if you could answer a question for me. Im up to putting the sandwiches together, but this is for my grand daughter that lives on Christmas Island here in Australia. It very hot there and I was just wondering if I could omit the batting inside or would it make the quilt to 'floppy' or something. Im new to sewing, but Im doing really well with the help of your videos. You rock x
@erica_arndt2 жыл бұрын
Hi, you can definitely omit it, you can also put a thin layer of cotton in the middle so it's lighter but still has the layers for the "rag" portion.

I love your videos, but when I printed out the pattern. The batting squares are written as 10.5x10.5. But, in the video you mention to size down on the batting squares...could you please clarify! Love your videos!
@erica_arndt4 жыл бұрын
Hi, you'll want to follow the measurements in the PDF download bit.ly/2EeTjr5 Once you sew the half square triangles together they measure 12.5" x 12.5" and your batting should then be 10.5" x 10.5".
@lesliemiller13574 жыл бұрын

how many squares for a baby one?
@erica_arndt4 жыл бұрын
Hi Shawna, You'll lose about 1"per seam so for example a 10" square will finish at about 8". From there you can decide how many blocks you want to make the finished size you need.
