Yeah the FX paint don't have as high a pigment count as the Liquitex heavy body paints as an example. So I think they work well as glazes or color shifts

This is amazing! My 10 year old wants to go as a plague doctor for Halloween. Last year we did Edward scissor hands. I love that he wants to be cool stuff and not just a plastic store bought mask! This looks very achievable and he can help me with it.

Great mask, will definitely get the template. As an aside, I like to texture my foam prior to cutting using scrunched up foil and a dry hot iron to make a leather texture

I made this. FYI, all the 6mm sections can be made to fit on two 9"x12" sheets of foam. The 2mm detail bits require less than 1 sheet.

Open the pdf in adobe acrobat and click “poster” this will scale the template properly across 2 sheets of regular paper 👍

Love the project and oddly appropriate with everything that is happening. Is there a specific type of respirator or filter you recommend when heating up foam, working with contact cement, sanding foam, etc? Also, how often do you recommend changing filters?

I built this mask using craft foam, assembling it with leather lace instead of glue. it doesn't sit on my face like I expected, but it still looks cool and I assume it's good for a starter

Well I guess the best answer is practice. I've been working with eva foam for over 7 years and have learned a lot during that time. Go check out some of the really detailed costumes and props I have built on my site and you'll see what I mean

My rolls are really big 24”x60” and Blick now has a bundle with 2,6,10mm But one roll of 6mm is all you need for this mask you are going to have a lot left for your next project 👍

Really cool project Steve I wanted to ask why do you seem to prefer super glue over contact cement on these smaller projects?

Super glue is much easier to control and keep the project clean. I pretty much only use contact cement if I am covering large or heavy wear areas but even then I still use super glue along the edge for clean lines.

Yes it’s scaled for adults. I think around 85% would be good for kids even if it’s a little big

COuld you possibly do this with making a rough model out of cardboard with the templates and then covering it with paper mache. I'm broke and can't afford nice foam sheets.

When we cut out the pattern should we cut outside of the black line so it's still included in the pattern pieces, or inside so there's no black line on the piece? I know it only makes a difference of a couple millimeters, just wanna make sure it's accurate

No because if you have to heat form any of the pieces the foam will bounce back and the tin foil details will vanish. You always want to wait until the last possible moment to add any embossing then lock it in with the Plasti dip

I'm not a leather guy but I think it would work fine. Several of my leather working friends use foam as a base to make their templates because the thickness works better than paper

Thanks! My HD-Foam is EVA Foam but it's specifically designed by me to be a higher density at the same shore hardness as everyone else. Which means it is easier to work with, cuts cleaner, and sands smoother. And because it's light grey you just need a pencil to mark on it no more silver sharpies.

Either will work. I prefer super glue on smaller details just to keep my builds clean contact cement is good on heavy wear or large areas
