See How to make a planing stop. both a traditional planing stop and a full beam planning stop. the traditional planning stop will keep the wood from moving in any direction and give great quick control. the full sized planing stop is great for thickness planning large and wide boards. Bench dogs are great of holding lumber in and end or tail vise. and a holdfast is perfect for holding the wood down tot he bench for carving or chopping. All of these stops are great to hand tool woodworking bench extras. So here is a quick look at how-to build a planing stop.

Holdfast are like the great thing of all time! I find excuses to use them haha. Ive been meaning to make a planing stop like your second one for a while, but I just haven't needed one. Anything edge grain, or boards around 4-5" I had just butt up to a dog, anything wider and I pinch between the tail vise and a dog. I don't see the benefit of those square metal spiked planing stops. I guess its just another option. I also have a big twin screw as my face vise and dont like planing in front of that as it sticks out. Anyways good videos as always friend!
@WoodByWright
@WoodByWright 7 жыл бұрын
very true. I am training myself to use different tools for teaching sake as everyone has different tastes and what works for you will not work for others. the traditional pop-up stop is great for products that want to slide around or taller things like edge planning or even planning logs and thick tall stock.

What specifically were your concerns about the holes on the old bench? I'm thinking about putting one together in the near future and am looking for input.

the old bench was made of pine so they wore out easier and were easily compressed making many of the holes bigger.

It is always a pleasure to watch your videos man. By the way, I have always wonder. How much does the hand plane blade has to stick out from under its base? I've seen videos of most wood workers where it seems the hand plane sits completely flat on the table, like if the blade is not protruding at all. Thanks in advance.
@WoodByWright
@WoodByWright 7 жыл бұрын
the plane blade sticks out however thick a shaving you want. usually from one thou to 1/16" but even then their is no problem as all for it to rest flat on the bench. some people like to put it on its side. but then you have an exposed iron for shaving knuckles of chipping when bumped with other tools.

Hey James, love your work and how you explain how to do things it makes tacking jobs in the shop that I have not yet done a breeze. I just went to black bear forge to check out the hold fasts and in the description it say will work in benches up to 4 inches??? Isn't your bench 5 inch? Also what would be the minimum thickness they would work in? My current bench is only 1 7/8 think of hard maple. Would that work? Keep up the great work.
@WoodByWright
@WoodByWright 7 жыл бұрын
thanks David. I have used them in up to 6" and they work well but you might want to modify the hole a bit there. your bench will work perfectly for them! I would use them in maple down to 1 1/2" personally.

Seems like you are forcing your planes too much to cut the white oak. I am not sure that is the right way to use a plane. You might break your plane. you might sharpen more the plane blade very well and try again with a gentle pushing and light setting. all the best!

in this case the reason it is looking harder to push is because it is a scrub plane taking off about 1/8" of material a pass most people traverse the grain, but in this case I did not have enough material to do that.
