My husband made this pump this weekend and it works great! We saved a lot of money by not buying a portable vacuum system ($1,200+?). We spent about $200 on parts from Amazon. We needed this to vacuum pollen out of the bottom of the pool - which could not be caught by the pool filter system. We used the 1hp motor and it worked great. Pumps a lot of water. Takes time to prime. Have to make sure the hoses are filled with water... Took us about 10 mins to prime. But we are amateurs. Thanks for the video!

TO ANYONE HAVING PRIMING ISSUES - take all the advice here very seriously when it comes to air leaks!!! I struggled to get my setup working using standard pool vacuum hoses on both the inlet and the outlet. Initially I used the blue ends of the hoses, which would normally attached to the vacuum at the pump and it would lose suction right away. Found that the blue ends of my hose were not air tight. Flipped it around to the white ends at the pump with some good hose clamps and not a problem since! Another tip ... if you have your main pool pump running at the same time, hold the vacuum over one of the jets to push water into the hose and prime the pump very quickly.

I actually bought an above ground pump to vacuum my inground pool. My skimmer is broken. I was have trouble getting the air out of the line and I remembered your advice. I put the hose over the return while it was attached to pump and it primed the pump and got the air out of the line, it worked flawlessly and took about 1 minute. The above ground pump had no trouble vacuuming my inground pool. I put a fine mesh net over the return hose and put it back in the pool, it caught all the fine debris at the bottom also. I plan on adding a small sand filter and putting it on a cart like what the pro's use. Thanks for the great advice.
@daveperkinsjr6 жыл бұрын
another good reason for this is you can vaccuum the pool before you open and start it in up in spring/summer. get all the nasty stuff out first and then open it. also he ignored wiring the pump in thisn video, just be sure the breaker, and the cord you use from pump to outlet, and the outlet is rated for the amps on the pump. usually 15 amp capability needed but checks pump specs. a 1 hp pump will normally draw something like 13-15 amps on a 115/120 outlet. also for maintenance vaccuuming you can use a 5 micron "sock filter" (look it up) and cable tie it to the discharge piping, and you dont have to vaccuum to waste. water discharge right back in the pool and not waste water. unless you have a lot of junk. 5 micron traps almost all small particles and algae before it goes back in the pool.

Ha nice! Did this last year with an old pump cause my main one failed, you can also attach it to a cart or trolley to move it around easy, this is common at public pools

was thinking to do that. sort of a duh moment but I forgot to remove my tap hose from pool and detached from another hose to water plants. Needless to say, been draining all day. LOL. Now have to fill the darn thing! Never thought of bypassing the skimmer and go directly to pump. Will work great if you have an above ground and the water level drops too low when doing a lot of waste cleaning. This will help clean me clean out my pond.

I bought this pump over 4 years ago after seeing this video just to have it on hand. I thought it was a great idea for cleaning the pool without putting anything in my pool filter. I hooked it up according to what I saw in this video but wanted the output to go to the main drain in the front yard, a distance of 120 feet. I ordered FLAT DRAIN HOSE for the output side, knowing that it was not what you used. You used regular round pool vac hose. The destination for the output was maybe 20 feet away from the pool, not 120 feet, as is my case. When I plugged the pump's cord into the outlet, things seemed normal for only a few seconds. The motor continued to run, but nothing was happening. I did prime the pump with a water hose, and it did pump for a few seconds, and the flat hose swelled to a rounded shape of about 2 inches in diameter, but that occurred to only the first foot of the output and went no further. Do you think it was flat drain hose that caused the problem? Would normal round pool vac hose work? I have some of that but haven't yet tried, or is the 120 foot distance too great even if replaced with regular pool vac hose? Thanks for some really great videos. You're a born teacher and a very good one.

I know this is old, but I have a Hayward Superpump. Similar design and you clearly have an air leak somewhere. Think about what's happening: everything from the impeller to the water surface must be completely airtight. That includes the cover of the chamber which is often a source for leaks. I make sure the groove that the gasket sits is well silicone grease and that gasket is in properly and then use a silicone grease on top of the gasket where it mates with the face of the cover. Then also you need to be sure the intake connection and the end of the hose are completely airtight too. Threads need to be teflon taped, Fill the chamber with water, clamp it shut and connect the hose. Start the pump. On my setup there's a 40' run to the pool and it may take a minute or two to get the flow going.

I will also hold my hand around the intake hose over the fitting to create a better air tight seal - kinda squeeze the vacuum hose with my hand around the fitting. I've also covered the outlet hose with my palm to create an air seal on that end also before and it primed up. But it could take up to a minute to prime up in some cases. Worst case you can stick a garden hose into the vacuum hose - this works best with the canister hook up I show, as priming it through the small 3 ft hose with the garden hose is optimal.

@@Hubjeep Good choice. In-ground would have better self-priming. You would need to splice a cord on to plug it in and they are heavier. I like the Above Ground ones because they are very light and come with a cord.

Hi and thanks for the videos! We get a lot of green pools in Phoenix with sand filters. The sand filters seem to maintain a blue pool OK but when it turns green it has a hard time bouncing back on sand alone. I've been thinking about making a portable unit like this with a cartridge filter and diverter that I can use to vacuum the pool then leave at the pool to offer better filtration over the sand to help the pool bounce back to clear blue. I'm hoping to get maximum filtration in 24 hours so big pump and big filter. Thinking of using the Hayward SP1580X15 for 1.5 hp. What size cartridge filter would you recommend if the pump and filter were both mounted to a wheel cart?

Check out the TomCat TopGun pump/filters. I will be reviewing them soon on my channel.
@rynophiliac7 жыл бұрын
I checked those out and they look nice but seem kind of expensive considering what the parts can be purchased for. Filter seems small but maybe thats ok for a unit that won't be running every day. I look forward to the review on your channel.

I made this pump and after I fill with water it expelles the water and l I ses prime. I have no air leaks. On my second pump sane problem. What is the issue?
@realfazey7 жыл бұрын
I've been doing pools for about 3 years now. I finally decided to bite the bullet and buy a separate pump to set up a "power vac" of sorts. I went with a local brand called blue torrent and I got they're 56 frame 1.5 hp inground self priming pump. It had both 2 in opening so I used a threaded reduced fitting which made it 1.5" and then did everything as you said. I believe the pump you used is an aboveground pump so I went with inground because I figured it would prime itself but it is not keeping prime. It is able to move water but at a very slow pace considering it's a gigantic 1.5 hp pump and it should be self priming. There is abt 1.5 inches of air in the basket and the suction is extremely weak. I can't figure out what I'm doing wrong. Could there be a leak in the vac hose? Also I am using on of those blue backwash hoses on the discharge side. Any help would be greatly appreciated!
@SUBZEROUKS6 жыл бұрын
Minhaal Faizi It is catching air. Get some. High temp unions and reduce to 1.5 with a threaded side. Use a good amount of teflon tape.

This is a great idea! But will it work with most above ground pool pumps? Or does it have to be this particular Hayward pump? I am under the assumption that most above ground pool pumps do not have the power to draw water vertically, but I might be wrong.

I actually just put one of these together yesterday to help clear up an above ground pool. I ended up going with a Pentair pump due to availability at local warehouse. I had a question regarding vacuuming. I stuck my commercial rainbow vacuum head and connected into the pump to vacuum out debris in an above ground pool. There was so much suction in the system despite having a 50 foot hose on it that I was unable to vacuum the pool. Is this because of the vacuum not being rated for above ground or is this due to the power of the pump. Any suggestions for which vacuum to use for this type of scenario?
@SPL7 жыл бұрын
Power of the pump. I suggest inserting a cleaner regulator valve inline - you probably have a few of those in your truck. You can always use a brush vac but the speed of those makes it a real pain. Inserting a suction side cleaner regulator and opening it all the way yup should regulate the flow.
@realfazey7 жыл бұрын
Josh McDermott I wish I had that problem haha. I can barely get any suction and if u saw the size of the pump I got you wouldn't believe it. I went with the local blue torrent brand even though I came in set on buying a Hayward super pump, because it was so big and just seemed like a complete monster. Yet it has little to no suction

How do I make the perfect schedule on an easy touch for a pool and spa need spa to be warm 90% of the time 😊 any suggestions can you give me times that will best work with the system single filter system pool and spa run off both so they need to alternate can you help?
@SPL9 жыл бұрын
Andrew Waycotte Depending on when you need to use your spa you can run your pool for one cycle first then add a Spa program to follow. Have the spa program running for the hours you want on a speed to activate the heater, I can't remember the minimum RPM for the heater off hand. Then when you are ready to use it crank up the RPM's, the spa will be hot already. Page 27 of the manual will show you how to set a spa program. Of course everyday the spa will flow out into the pool but if you set it up like this it will be reheated by the time you need it. I filmed a basic video on the EasyTouch that you might find helpful - EasyTouch® Pool and Spa Control Programming Schedule, Cleaner, Pump RPM, Salt: kzbin.info/www/bejne/jHibnZemfrWci7M

I'm trying to run the Hayward but seems am having some issues getting a vacuum to develop in the primer. Sucks all water out of the primer and then that's it, no flow. Did anyone have any issues like this...
@SPL8 жыл бұрын
+Rick Miranda It takes a bit of effort sometimes to get it primed. Try using a bucket again. I usually use a canister so the 3 ft hose works well vs the 40 ft of hose. It will prime, just keep at it.
@ricardomiranda77378 жыл бұрын
+Swimming Pool Tips, Reviews & How To -MrDgvb1 I filled up the primer container first, then I took the other end of the inlet hose and filled it using a garden hose until hose was overflowing. Quickly connected that end to the vacuum head, as close to pool surface as possible, then dunked head in pool and then plugged in pump. This worked like a charm.
@shakapedia176 жыл бұрын
Check also for air leaks on the vacuum hose side (in flow). I couldn't get mine to prime just because I had attached the vacuum head end of the hose to the ingress side of the pump rather than to the vacuum head, (it's the one that swivels more, and it also lets in more air). Depends on the type of hose too, as some hoses are identical on both ends. The hose I got was from Walmart and it definitely has one end that is more air leaky, and it is so by design. But if you look closely it has a notice faintly imprinted on the hose end, "attach this end to the vaccum head". As soon as I turned the hose around...it primed just fine.
@daveperkinsjr6 жыл бұрын
fill the hose with water, then fill the pump with your bucket, make sure gasket and drain plugs are tight, make sure hose is tight and the inlet adapter is screwed in all the way. make sure the vaccuum head is under water. should prime...
