Great looking ring. I was wondering how you were going to turn down the stone and glue mixture without chewing up the tools. How long did it take to cut it down with the sand paper. And what grit did you wind up using? It looks like 80 grit, but I imagine that is because of being so zoomed in.
@WoodworkingBarcelona
@WoodworkingBarcelona 9 жыл бұрын
Hi mate! I normally use 60 or 80 grit sandpaper to turn down the stone. For a ring like this it would take me about 10 minutes. It's important to not be aggressive because of overheat. For this reason and to prevent cracks it's better to use a high quality hardwood like Boxwood, Purple Heart, Granadillo or maybe bentwood. I hope it helps. Regards from Barcelona!

Hello Woodworking Barcelone. I would really like to ask you for advice. I'm looking for a fun hobby to do outside of the house and I'm thinking of buying a lathe (around 130 euros) to start practicing with things like making rings and candlesticks. Do you think it's safe for me to spend my money on one? I have literally no expierence with woodworking. Is it hard to do? How long did it take for you to become this good at it?

Hey man, just a few questions for you...what type of chuck are you using to hold the piece once you've got it down to the dowel size and are just working on the face of it (at around 0:42) ? Its hard to get a look at it with how close you are. But I'd like to know about that chuck and how the piece fits in. If you ever get a chance, it would be cool if you did a full tutorial on making a ring like this. This type of vid is great for a quick overview, but for someone trying to learn it would be awesome for you to actually take us through your whole procedure with instruction and commentary as you went. I imagine you're busy, but think about it! Thanks very much for the video!

hello, i want to say that the ring turned out beatiful and the video was great. i have started making rings too but i dont have lathe. however i have a rotary tool kit. i have a question; the stone you used, lapis lazuli, is it easy to work on? you grinded it on lathe, but can i grind it by hand after i glued it? i would be glad if you answer me as soon as possible.
@WoodworkingBarcelona
@WoodworkingBarcelona 8 жыл бұрын
Thanks for coming by and comment. Lapislazuli it's not a hard stone to work with but grinding it by hand would be too much. But you can sand it by mounting it in your rotatory tool and use a 36 grit sand paper for grind it to the ring surface. Good luck!

what sanding paper grit did you use to flat down tge stones? when I used a red sanding paper like the one you're using, my stones turned all red
@WoodworkingBarcelona
@WoodworkingBarcelona 8 жыл бұрын
I've never experienced that. I use regular chromium oxide sandpaper for wood. I progressively use 80/120/240 and then my set of polishing stones for the Dremel. Regards.

I love the look you have achieved, but turning against the grain (between centers) makes a weaker product. Have you ever had a ring made this way break? Thanks for the video
@WoodworkingBarcelona
@WoodworkingBarcelona 6 жыл бұрын
+Dennis Adams I didn't experienced a break of my product. Anyway, if you're concerned about that you can always use bend laminated wood to add stability and flexibility. Regards

Hey, awesome work! I want to make a ring too, but I don't have a lathe, and as I see, they are quite expensive. What do you recommend to use instead? I think I have some tools in my father's workroom, so I have drill, files, etc. but no lathe
@WoodworkingBarcelona

+B. Jaca Thanks for your comment. It's not problem at all. In future I've planed to share a ring project using only a drill. Be patient till then. Regards!
