I see Jenny doing what I’ll call a square in a square @ 3:20. At first glance I thought this was 6 1/2” blocks created w a variegated Jellyroll, then background cut the same size and simply sewn as rows, on point. Then one wouldn’t necessarily need to make these as squares in a square. Lovely quilt! Happy sewing!

All I thought was “why”? All the blocks are now bias. Also it becomes over pieced IMHO. nice quilt, though!

I'm thinking of sewing it on point with whole background 6.5" blocks to avoid some cutting and sewing. It'll make a smoother quilt to quilt on a domestic machine while also saving time.

Louise, I think it’s called Pi (a math term). But do not quote me as I’m pulling it out of thin air. (Lol!). Multiply your block size by 1.414 and that’s the diagonal size to cut the side pieces. Please someone chime in and help with this. As I’m only about 12.5% sure of what I’m proposing. I’ve always found the quilting community to be lovely and warm. Hoping for the answers to appear soon! Happy sewing.

I have been sewing for 55+ years - quilting for maybe 30?! ? Never thought about how much easier it would be to sew my finger pressed pieces fold-to-fold rather than peak-to-peak. This old dog is still learning new tricks! Thank you!

Beautiful quilt. I’ve been working on a similar quilt (London Roads) with blocks set on point, but instead of those triangles the pattern uses full squares, which is easier and faster.

What I love about this type of block is that you can use fat quarters instead of jellyrolls. I've got access to a lot of FQs in my area, and they're financially easier for me.

Depending on your Jelly Roll a nice blush (very light pink) would be pretty, too. If that is not an option, I personally, would prefer a cream color. The colors would still come out nicely, but a bit softer as with a stark white background. Take care - Europe ⚘

Jenny! You can just cut 6.5" squares and do checkerboard pattern....you just cut along the edges at the end, cutting off the triangles that stick out. There's no bias stretch to worry so much about!. Just need to add a triangle to the 4 corners of the quilt top to finish!

My thoughts exactly. Just cut 6 1/2" black squares and sew the blocks together in a diagonal line. You would only need the large triangles on the sides and corners.

I’ve known quilters who were terrified of the idea of setting things on point. They didn’t like having to deal with the side & corner triangles, also weren’t comfortable with the diagonal rows. This method give a nice alternative.

Jenny should really quit teaching people to cut the squares diagonally both ways. It creates 4 bias edges. You should only cut them across one time. New quilters may not know any better.

Not everyone can handle doing it on point. It can be more time consuming, especially if you are not sure/or are afraid of getting things mixed up. At least if you are laying things out in a square like Jenny did, you are least likely to go wrong. My first on point quilt was very frustrating for me and I made a lot of mistakes in my layout. And I was trying to be super careful. As Jenny says, it all depends on how your brain works.
