This is the first time I've seen silicone painted on, rather than poured on. This seems so much less wasteful!

Yes, that's why I like it. A mold this size would be way too expensive for me, if I used the pouring kind.

Me too! Only knew latex (not expensive) where you need to put several layers and let it dry between, but there is a thickener too

@@UltimatePaperMache I understand! I found my slice of heaven about 18 years ago, 20 acres on a mountain in S. California. It's very remote, not close to anything, but I'm surrounded by nature and peace. I spent my first 40 years in a city in Texas I never liked, decided life is too short not to live the life I want, so I moved 1500 miles to a very different place. I've lived off-grid here 15 years now, sometimes I don't see another human for weeks but I have 15 goats, chickens, cats a dog and a parrot, so I'm never lonely! I used to be a professional artist, but gave it all up during my 15 year marriage to a violent alcoholic who hated my "arts and crap" as he called it. Now he's gone, and my schizophrenic adult son lives with me. He's artistic, too, so I've started art projects for fun that we both work on. It's helping us heal from the abuse we both endured. This house used to be oppressively sad and scary, but now it's a happy, even silly place! My kitchen cabinets need repainting, but instead I've covered them with contact paper, and created collages on top of that with pictures of cute animals cut from feed bags, and other items. Decorating with trash! lol I want to try making animal faces with paper mache to add 3-d effects. I figure when I get tired of it, it will be easy to peel off the contact paper.

@@LazyIRanch What an interesting idea! I love it. And I agree that art can make a huge difference to our state of mind, both while we're making it, and when we're surrounded by it. I never make sculptures of angry or sad animals or people, because I feel my house is my sanctuary and it should reflect the way I always want to feel. Being off-grid would be nice, too, but I'm firmly attached to the electric, water and gas lines. It makes me nervous, especially after what just happened in Texas. But I do have a big garden and chickens in the yard. When you make your animal faces for you kitchen, I hope you'll show them off on my blog - I'd love to see them.

I haven't done paper Mache since I was in elementary school 40ish years ago but when I decided to make toilet paper dollhouse food for my KZbin channel one of my subscribers said I made toilet paper clay. I was like "what's that" because I only used clear glue and toilet paper to make mine and it wasn't a clay consistency, anyway I looked up their toilet paper clay statement and found your channel which amazed me. I ended up making my mixture then I added joint compound and flour to make my new clay then I also tried a test clay by adding a little bit of olive oil in one to see if it made a difference and it did help with the stickiness which ended up allowing me to used less flour. In the past I have always used Sculpey but I really like this clay so much better. Anyhow, I just wanted to say you inspired me to try something new and I thank you for taking the time to make your videos.

Hi Johnnie. After watching three of your videos on Garden 😮 Clay…or whatever name got the most votes, I started wondering why the (in)famous KZbin algorithms haven’t introduced us years ago. I’m a little miffed about that. Anyway, I am now one of your newest subscribers. Was hunting a way to make a two foot or so high statue for my garden in a medium that wouldn’t require firing. Low temp clay won’t work because I couldn’t put it into the oven. I don’t know of any weather proof air dry clay until I stumbled onto your video about the frog. Now my brain is humming and I am trying to work out ways and means and wondering how much experimentation I will need to do before diving into my intended project. Thanks for the hand up.

@@UltimatePaperMache noooo, it’s a personal project for my career, I’m studying Visual Arts. I already know how to make silicone molds and resin pieces because of that, but resin can be really expensive and I wanted to experiment with something else. I never thought of making something of paper mache and now you saved my life with this video jajaja. Before I found it I was literally googling how to do a paper mache piece with a silicone mold.😂 I’m really excited to try this. What I’m making is a sculpture of a fragmented woman’s body with two masks on the sides; a black sheep and a white wolf. It’s a sculpture about vulnerability and the two sides of a human. One “mask” can’t live without the other, they are part of the same body. P.S: you have a new follower and it seems like I will be very active watching your videos jaja. You have the facility to teach things that can be caotic if you ignore there are some things to make it more effective. Thank you for that!

Your fox sculpt is one of the prettiest, most realistic mask sculptures I've ever seen and I'm very impressed. I love making paper mache deer masks (I'm a taxidermist in training so I have been putting tin foil over a really old deer head to get the right proportions) and it's difficult to make it over and over with an equal proportion considering I want to be able to sell them soon while also wanting them to look uniform. This is a very helpful video, and once I get the money for the molding materials (starting college soon so I am a little tight on money haha) I'm definitely going to return to this video and others. I used to be disgusted by paper mache when I did it for the first time in elementary school (they didn't mix the flour right so it had a gross texture to me) but now it's one of my favorite art forms and I love looking at your channel for pointers :)

Have you seen Atelier Arenas videos on making paper maché into plaster molds painted with a soap mixture for a mold release? It omits the expense of the silicone. She just pops out her layers when dry. I think this might work for paper maché clay, but you have to cut up the originals to get around undercuts then re-assemble when dry. Her originals are oil based clay.

Hi Kim. Thanks for your very nice comments. 😀 I don't use paper-based products for outdoor sculptures. I did a lot of experiments to find a product that would keep the water off them, and none of my experiments worked. However, you can still make garden art using basically the same sculpting techniques that I use, but without using paper mache. My garden gnome has been standing outside during two Minnesota winters, so I know it can be done. If you'd like to see how he was made so you can get some ideas for your next outdoor sculpture, this is the first video in the series: kzbin.info/www/bejne/rom2pIWlap5-rdE

Thank you for your good teaching 🙏🏽😍Can air dry dough be used instead of clay? And the dough must be completely dry to use silicone? And do you need a special spray to separate the dough from the surface of the mold? Because in your video the paste has a very smooth and shiny surface like ceramic?
@UltimatePaperMache
@UltimatePaperMache 8 ай бұрын
The silicone won't stick to most things, so you can probably use air dry dough as your model, and build your mold around it. I use wet clay, and make the mold before the clay has dried. That's why it looks shiny. If you let it dry it's a little harder to get it out of the mold.

Your videos are so helpful, that you so much for sharing your knowledge!! Can I ask, how would you make molds of vases? I’ve used bowls and different items put together and love the shape. I’d like to now paper mache this shape to make many vases using this shape but i’m lost as how to do this making a mold? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Hi Becky. I think you'd need to make two molds. If you have a mold for each side of a tall vase, you could put your paper mache in both of them, and maybe put the mold together and reach inside to finish the seam with a few more pieces of paper mache. If you can't reach inside, they would have to dry separately - and if they don't warp at all while they're drying, you could put the two sides together when they dry. It's possible that you could use a positive mold, like a vase that you already have. Put the paper mache over it, but create a seam so you'll be able to pull the two halves off the vase when the paper mache is dry. Those are the only two options I can think of. Have fun with your experiments!

I was reading your reply and thinking ‘how didn’t I think of this’ I can only assume it’s all these covid regulations here in the U.K. causing me brain fog! thanks so much for all your videos...I've not done paper mache since I was a kid! I'm an artist and starting to work on a piece that is going to involve needing hundreds of river stones. It's going to be heavy enough as it is so I'm thinking paper mache would be an ideal medium. My original thought was to cover each stone with paper mache using one of your formulas, then use an exacto knife to open the paper mache to get the stone out, then paper macheing the stone shut. They will all be painted with acrylics to look like stones. I'm wondering if perhaps making a mold would work, but then I'm thinking I'd have to make it in 2 halves, creating more work than what's already going to be involved. Just wondering if you have any advice?
@UltimatePaperMache
@UltimatePaperMache 2 жыл бұрын
That sounds like a lot of work, no matter how you do it! If you don't need the stones to be exactly the same shape every time, you could just crumple some newspaper into the right sized blob, hold it firmly together by covering it with some masking tape, and cover that with your paper mache. You only need one or two layers of paper and paste if you have something inside to support the paper mache. And you wouldn't have to cut them apart and put them back together. You'd need a lot of masking tape, which can be expense. However, I found a brand (Tartan, by 3M) that works well for paper mache and is really cheap if you buy it online from Home Depot. A 60 yard roll of .70" tape is $0.79 on their website. Other stores charge a lot more for the same product. Have fun! We'd love to see how your project turns out, so remember to show it off here: www.ultimatepapermache.com/daily-sculptors-group-page 😊

@@UltimatePaperMache thanks for your suggestion. In your experience do you think the paper/masking tape route would present as smooth a surface? I'm almost thinking that creating a silicone mold like you did with the fox might be better...that way it would pick up the texture of some of the stones and the smoothness of others. I've got about a dozen stones to choose from and it would seem like the more molds I had the quicker the production rate might be. This is gonna take a while but I'll try to do a little video or something as I experiment. I see the finished piece in my mind, the hard part is making it happen in real life!! Thanks for your inspiration, I"ll be watching more of you videos to learn more.

I'm looking for making molds for paper mache from plaster of paris as it's a cheap and easily accessible material here. Silicone needs a mortgage and a search party to source it here. Also, yes I'd be interested to know why you'd make a mold for a single item.
@UltimatePaperMache
@UltimatePaperMache 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Petrik - I haven't tried using paper strips and paste in a plaster of Paris mold, but there's a guest post on my site showing us how one artist does it. You can see that post here: www.ultimatepapermache.com/how-to-use-paper-mache-with-a-plaster-mold And I make molds for just one item because I really like to play with real clay. I can be much more spontaneous with clay than I can with paper mache, and you can get some really nice, fine details that are really hard to get any other way. But I can't afford a kiln, so the only way I can make my clay sculptures permanent is to make a mold and cast them in plaster. Thanks for asking. :)

What kind of clay do you use? Is it plasticine or natural earthen clay?
@UltimatePaperMache

You can use any kind of clay for your model, as long as it doesn't contain sulfur. I'm using WED clay, an earthen clay with additives that make it really good for sculpting models (it can't be fired). But this works just as well with oil-based clay.

How about using/ spreading smooth paper mache clay in the mold?
@UltimatePaperMache
@UltimatePaperMache 3 жыл бұрын
I've tried that, and it didn't make a very good casting. The texture of the paper caused little voids in the surface, and it made the casting look weird. Some people say that my air dry clay recipe works in silicone molds, but I think they were using small candy molds. I don't know if the shrinkage of the air dry clay would cause problems in a larger mold or not. You can see the recipe for the smooth air dry clay recipe here (if you haven't already found it): kzbin.info/www/bejne/j4DMoKl9g5KsfqM

I'm using the brown paper that comes with amazon.com boxes. It's just slightly stiffer than newspaper. Newspaper actually works better, but the brown paper would look better in the video so that's what I used for the demo. You want the paper to be soft enough to follow all the curves inside the mold.

When making masks, do you recommend using paper mache clay or paper strips?
@UltimatePaperMache
@UltimatePaperMache 2 жыл бұрын
I don't recommend using the paper mache clay for a part of the mask that will be next to the skin. It dries as hard as a rock, and it has a slight texture so it's almost impossible to make it smooth enough to be comfortable. But you can use it for the details on a mask made with paper strips and paste.

I do see why you would want to make copies of it but at the same time I've seen people using some caulk silicone to make molds. The price of $37 is a lot of money for a mold but if it's going to be for a long period of time then maybe it's worth it if you can't do it with the caulk mode
@UltimatePaperMache
@UltimatePaperMache 2 жыл бұрын
I've tried the caulk silicone recipes, and I couldn't get a mold that was as good as you can get with the product that's actually made for that purpose. I wouldn't rely on the DIY version if I was making something to sell, but maybe I just didn't do it right.

Not sure if you added this at some point in your video, but the type of clay you use will actually matter a lot- clays containing sulfur will inhibit the silicone from curing and just ruin your sculpture. A good oil based clay is monster clay- i'm not sure about air dries. Sculpy is one that is baked in an oven, and is also good.
@UltimatePaperMache
@UltimatePaperMache 3 жыл бұрын
That is true - thanks for the reminder. I intended to mention it, but cut out that part when I was trying to make the video shorter. Do look on the label when buying your modeling clay to make sure it doesn't contain sulfur.
