Maybe make a Clock with 74 series TTL / 40/45 series CMOS Standart ICs - that will be more interesting than with a Microcontroller IC ! :)

What is the current for each segment? If it's about 20ma you can change the 7 segment displays for numitrons and make ir cooler

Yeah, he uses the 7805 to step 9V to 5V. If you're using 5V you don't need the 7805
