Coil pottery is very versatile. You can either leave the decorative coils showing, or you can make a smooth coil pot. In this video, I demonstrate how I use clay coils to hand build pottery and make smooth coil pots.
There are lots of different ways of hand-building using coil pottery, this is just how I do it! I hope you enjoy the video and find it helpful.
I used a clay called 'buff school clay' by Potclays. If you aren't based in the UK and equivalent would be this amzn.to/2HPhcYG

Thanks from Saskatchewan, Canada for sharing your knowledge - do you use clay with grog for hand building? Just starting to get interested in pottery as a retirement hobby.

Thanks for this helpful video! How long did it take you to build the pot?
@ThePotteryWheel
@ThePotteryWheel 3 жыл бұрын
It took about 6 -7 hours if I remember rightly. I tend to build a few inches and then leave it to firm up, and then go back to it the next day for another couple of hours. If you add too much clay at one time it can get a bit wonky with the weight. Hope that helps. I'm making another video about making smooth coil pots which I will publish in the next day or so. Which you might find helpful too. All the best :)

@@ThePotteryWheel thanks! That's helpful. Do you think you could do a video on how to glaze the insides of vases to make them watertight especially if you can't reach your hand in?

How much clay (in weight) do you think you used for the pot prior to adding the neck?
@ThePotteryWheel
@ThePotteryWheel 3 ай бұрын
Hi Sarah. I can't remember exactly how much the clay weighed. Maybe 1.5kg, but I can't be sure of that

Can you use a wheel to trim a hand coiled piece?
@ThePotteryWheel
@ThePotteryWheel 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Faydiva, it's not something I've tried, though I don't see why not. As long as the coils are firmly bonded together it should be fine. Let me know how it goes

I thought you were going to show how to smooth it. Instead you just mentioned you were going to scrape it later.
