Why not just put your entrance in the bottom of the bucket? Then it will be well protected from rain. Also, to catch larger swarms, would you ever attach two buckets (mouth to mouth) to increase the overall volume of space? About the breathing holes, don't the bees just propolize the holes?
@OkAdventure9943 жыл бұрын
To your first question about the entrance on the bottom. I will be making a few this year to test if bees will still move into swarm traps with bottom entrance. My guess is it doesn't matter. The swarm I ended up catching was 3lbs of bees and they only ended up filling less than half the bucket, so 5 gallons should get probably a 6 maybe 7lb swarm. The breathing holes have never been propolized shut because I don't leave the bees long enough in the bucket to start propolizing holes. Most I leave them is around 1 week in bucket after I have pulled it from the woods. Good questions tho. Thank for the comment.
@danni4213 Жыл бұрын
@OkAdventure994 hey! Did you try the hole at the bottom of bucket? Did it work out?
@dandorosheff256 Жыл бұрын
@@danni4213 Hi. Yes the hole in the bottom of the bucket does work. It certainly prevents rain running down the side to enter the bucket. My double bucket (think of a large minnow trap) did not catch a swarm this season. Maybe location or any of a number of reasons. I do paint some melted wax around the outside of the whole and all over the inside. I’ve also gone to writing on the outside with sharpie to tell others what it is. One lady thought she was being spied on.

I have watched Easter eggs being made before. You pour the hot chocolate into a mould, swill it around so it touch all the international surfaces then you pour out the excess. Could a similar process be used here if you were in a rush? Or is the texture left by the paint brush bristles beneficial?

I’d move them into a box within a week after caught. You can put the box directly in the spot the bucket was so you don’t lose any foragers. Then move a few feet a day tell you get them in the spot you want the box to stay at for good.
