Easy to make and really work great! No smoke once the fire gets going. I found out how to make one 3 years ago and it's still burning strong!

I'm glad I came across this video. I've been looking for a solution to my waste disposal problem at home without creating too much smoke. I live in the Philippines, where open burning is very common. I just learned about these burn barrels today and immediately made one. I can say that there was little to no smoke while burning in these barrels. Thank you!

I wish I had learned this earlier. This was such a great idea. I'm going to share this with my relatives, hopefully, my neighbors will learn about this too. So we can all burn our trash (mostly dry leaves) without generating excessive smoke in the neighborhood.

I would consider laying the cinder block on their sides to allow more free-flow air to the bottom vents more evenly. Cheers from northern Alberta, Canada.

I like this idea. I'd love to do the double barrel design but don't really feel like spending the time and effort and honestly, I don't know how much better that design would be from this one.
@armedanddangerousdiy60962 жыл бұрын
Actually one of the ones I study pretty hard was a double barrel where you drill a bunch of holes with a hole saw. It looked like the perfect engineering answer, but just the thought of using a Sawzall and a hole saw for two days made me nauseous. In the end I went with this style because a torch and a hammer is extremely fast. I made three of these barrels in a weekend including the fancy one I put on KZbin. The other two were just a barrel with no top grate or legs. I can tell you now that I’ve been using it for six months that I can burn three entire barrels stuffed full of cardboard and end up with about one cup of ashes. That is based on what gets dropped on the ground as I roll the barrel back outside the next day. After a rain the ash literally disappears.

Good Job buddy. I am doing one also, only using a side grinder and cutting wheel instead.
@armedanddangerousdiy60962 жыл бұрын
Yes you can absolutely do it that way it’s just a bit more difficult. I actually made two more if you notice the color changes in the video. I currently have them up for sale on Facebook marketplace. If they sell like hotcakes this summer I might keep making them and use the income to justify the $600 torch I bought to my wife. :-). “See honey, I really DO need all these tools!!!“

Did you take into account the Coriolanus effect? I was wondering just how much effect that would have, either way (going with it or fighting it). Any fluid engineers in the house?
@armedanddangerousdiy60962 жыл бұрын
Well I am an engineer, I’m more of the electrical variety. The whole goal was simply to get the air to swirl as fast as possible which seems to be the general trend on KZbin. My personal goal was to make the barrel as fast as possible with a torch, instead of using a saws all and holesaw‘s which take forever. I did look up the effect you’re talking about, but I’m afraid it’s a little out of my depth. After I built the first one it worked so well I decided it was good enough. Thanks for your comment!

Burning cardboard boxes which can be composted or recycled, why
@armedanddangerousdiy60962 жыл бұрын
We have one can for compost and one bin for recycle every two weeks. This was our solution to the holiday overflow. Yes, burning is not ideal.

So can the cardboard work great in the garden to amend the soil and bring in the worms. We collect all the amazon boxes or preferrable bed frame boxes we can get.@@MichaelLee-tp2fv

Why don't you recycle the cardboard?
@armedanddangerousdiy6096 Жыл бұрын
Because my recycling bin is stuffed full of plastic. I’d rather burn the paper than put plastic in the trash. Keep in mind I built this in the middle of Covid where my wife was ordering EVERYTHING off the internet. I only burn what won’t fit in a recycle bin.

it's quite ridiculous, just because you cut a hole at an angle it doesn't mean the air will flow at that angle! Round holes cut with a stepped hole drill will do just as well, air gets sucked in the same way whatever shape the hole, even square and triangular. A boat builder here in England showed me 40 years ago how to burn waste, sawdust in particular and sawdust isn't the most combustible of product unless you know how, his barrel only had one 6 inch hole in the bottom and the barrel stood on 4 house bricks. I'm not giving away the sawdust method, it's so simple but roars like a jet engine! It's quite laughable looking at all the hard work some of you put into making one when all you need is one hole and 4 bricks....
