Hello Carl, It's always a great pleasure to log in KZbin and find a new video from you, one of the greatest gentlemen who shares his extensive knowledge. Thank you for introducing me to the compression jig. This was a great project and I'm grateful that my one-to-one tutorials on the use of the skew are paying off. My current pupil is Mike Waldt and he shows considerable promise with the skew. However, he has disappeared off to an English sea side resort which is famed for its oysters.

great job, I will try with a full circle as jig, I would do all cut by hand with a hand jig, and you take away 3 mm wood to close the plate that holds pressure so find it more efficient :3 Great idea.

Hi Carl I make these but instead of the jig I take 2 of the chuck jaws out opposite ones so that you can put your square blank in and turn the hollow first and then put it between centres and turn the rest. Maybe give it a try

Carl, you must have enough footage to create a nice video blooper edit by now. If you have already one and I missed it, can you let me know how to find it? And if you haven't done one yet, I can't wait to see one. Maybe Halloween would be a good time to release one showing all the objects flying off the lathe? I think these "scoop" projects are among my favorites. Thanks for the great work.

Hi Carl, the spoon is a very beautiful work. The idea of the bracket where you've embedded the spoon and have then clamped into the lathe is not bad. just as you have kept the roughing gouge at the beginning and you cover it with the hand, so that the chips do not fly around.
@AsWoodTurns11 жыл бұрын
Great video and jig illustration. I worry about that handle flying around. One moment of inattention and whack - a major hurt to a hand. :( Alan Stratton

Great project. Just got my first lathe last week and have done two bowls and a few pens. I am definitely going to try to replicate some of the stuff i have seen you make. I find my problem is I dont exactly know which tools to use when. Do you have a video explaining this kind of thing? If not, that could be a very helpful thing for somebody like me. I also cant seem to get a good cut sometimes. Could be a function of cheap tools, or not sharp enough maybe...still playing around though.

@N5IWA11 жыл бұрын
I am sure you have answered this some ware but what sandpaper do you use? I am thinking about wet sanding so I don't keep the paper so long. I let it get too dull. How did you calculate the volume of the scoop?

Good job, Carl. Would you be so kind as to provide the link to the instruction on making this jig that you eluded to in the video, please? Thank you.

Great video Carl. Would it help if you used a hosepipe clip (Jubliee clip) on the fixture? It would possibly bring a little more pressure on the spoon in the fixture. It's just a thought, that's all.

I am not a woodturner, but I couldn't help asking: why you don't cut the blank in half on a bandsaw which would result on having two spoons and less wood to remove on the lathe? BTW I enjoy watching your videos.
@kenlor719 жыл бұрын
+RrahimStruja The size of the bowl determines the size of the wood needed. On the lathe he turned the handle first then put it in a chuck to shape the bowl. Cutting the block of wood in half would only work if he was going to hand carve the handle.

Bit late to the party here, but I'm wondering if it'd be worth bolting on some counterweight for the jig. You're effectively making a bowl with a handle, so would it be worth using a bowl gouge for hollowing out?
@CarlJacobson3 жыл бұрын
With something this small you really don't need counterweight. A bowl gouge would work if you have a small one. The one I have is a little to big.
