First of all, thank you for your service, second, my nephew is a Marine (so proud of him) and mostly why I'm commenting is to tell you about Rob Cosman on KZbin. He is a master woodworker and more importantly, the creator of the Purple Heart Project. He brings in combat wounded vets for an intense hand tool woodworking seminar. Please check this out. I have been a supporter for years now and cannot say enough about what this project has done for the participants. (They have a blast!) You'll see. And they learn a lot of skills to take home with them, along with tools and a strength in themselves to help them into their futures. Check it out!

I spent thirty years making architectural millwork pieces for restoring historic mansions. Since most of my work was duplicating original pieces I always had patterns to use . I was at a loss recently when I needed to make some five pointed stars and didn’t have much luck-thanks

Appreciate woodworkers who build with tools that are more "real world" and affordable versus the sort of shops outfitted with tools that most folks could never afford. Also like that you leave in your mistakes and how you remedy the mistakes as this is where many if not most of us actually live. Thanks.

Super job with the video! I made a star today to go on the spiral tree I made. The star was quick and easy...took just 25 minutes to measure cut and assemble. I used Titebond III and glued the star together. It seems to be holding well. I later used pocket hole screws for added support. I plan to paint the tree and star and will post a photo when done. Thanks for your great videos.

KZbin keeps recommending woodworking Christmas videos to me. So far this is the first star that I've seen and I really like it. I will definitely try to make it. I don't have a sliding miter saw, just a fixed miter saw, but the cuts are pretty simple, so I don't think it will be a problem. I personally don't prefer the way you painted that one star. I think it would look better if the inner lines were thinner, which would require the chamfer to be probably half the thickness that you did, but the style is nice. Edit: The more I think about it; I think just not having the inner red lines at all would look best to me, keep the chamfers the way they are, they should add a nice shadow, but only paint the outer lines of the star.
@cedarriverwoodworking

Tree first I'm sure you know, you can use any R2 (Robinson/ square drive) bit to drive those kreg screws. Shorty bit for those easy to reach projects ! My 20 year old Hitachi doesn't provide the cut capability that most modern saws have. I use a jig for extreme angles, or just use my table saw with a ripping jig. I prefer the table saw ripping jig to be honest. I hope you're Andy when you wake up, sounded like you were done with him there at the end, "I have been Andy" LOL Thanks for the inspiration!

I really like the plain star and tree. My husband has a bunch of barn boards, maybe he can make a tree out of those? I saw the tree video first. Looking forward to seeing more videos and ideas.

Like the plain wood star! I'm going to try. Do you use digital angle finder to make sure miter saw is at correct angle?
@cedarriverwoodworking
@cedarriverwoodworking Жыл бұрын
I just used the engraved scale on the saw. Digital angle finder would be a good way to do it as well.

I’m very new to wood working. Is there a way to put this together without the pocket jig set?

Yes you could use wood glue and clamp it together.

Tree first Painted star. Can you use this method for 1x material too?
@cedarriverwoodworking
@cedarriverwoodworking Жыл бұрын
You can use the same method for any thickness of material. I would just adjust the screw length to 1.5" with thinner material.

I followed the video for making the star and I really enjoyed it. However, after making all the cuts I tried putting together the star with all of the diamond pieces and the last diamond piece doesn’t fit. Is there anyway I can fix this? I am a beginner WW so it’s possible that my angle cuts could have been off slightly. Is there anyway to salvage? Or is this now firewood? Thank you.

I'm not sure if you made it to the assembly part, but mine was off a little bit too. Check out this video and it may help to tune your saw in a bit better. kzbin.info/www/bejne/fmTKfaR4bteXY5Y

I have a really good question i think. My miter saw does not have a degree adjustment, so i drew out the degrees on a board and set it. When i was done i had a 6 pointed star. It took a little trimming, but it was not even close to being a five point star. Could my degrees be that far off with compounding?
@cedarriverwoodworking
@cedarriverwoodworking Жыл бұрын
That would have to be very very far off. I am curious to see what the measurements are that they are.
