What a great in-depth start to this cool series. Playing around with pads and atmospheres are something I love to do, and find I can lose many hours in that absorbing world. I especially liked the vocoder approach, too. I use Reason, Dune 3, Pigments 2, Straylight, so will definitely look into these techniques. Thanks, great job, and looking forward to the next part.

My bro.. all I have to do is go to your releases prior to me subscribing to you and I find tutorials on things I've always wanted explained the way you do. It makes me so happy knowing we don't need to spend HUNDREDS on samples and can simply design these on our own. I'm very much moving away from sampling anything I can create myself with ease and you're looking out for so many producers like this! I only wish someone with your knowledge can one day do a tutorial on designing cinematics scream / alarm / trailer sounds as all I'm finding is Kontakt libraries but feel like these can be done with synthesis. You've got a massive future on KZbin brother, thanks for the 100th time for your work.

Wow, the series starts deep Cam! I might need to check out rapid, I really liked the first example you did there. And as far as my limited knowledge of FM suggests I have no way to get something like that with FM8 or Operator since there's no way to morph the oscillators around (if it's doable please enlighten me). I'll try to get some inspiration from this tutorial and play around with the Granulator II device for Ableton and plop the vocoder on top of that. Thanks for this, can't wait for the next parts! Cheers (with evening coffee)!
@VenusTheory4 жыл бұрын
Glad it was helpful! And for sure - while you can get something similar in FM8 or Operator, they aren't also wavetable synths so you're sort of restricted to adding movement with other things like detuning/chorus/whatever. That said, maybe mess with a patch in FM8/Operator, bounce it, then toss that in Granulator!
@mattiabruni54634 жыл бұрын
You can't do the same thing but if you modulate the modulators themselves you should be able to put an LFO on that
@TheSoulSynthesis4 жыл бұрын
@@mattiabruni5463 I might try it this weekend. Fm8 sure has enough loopable envelopes do do something like that. Thanks for the heads up :)

This is a fantastic tutorial, been experimenting with these granular pads. I notice that when I make them, the resulting atmos seems to transpose to a different key. Any tips on how you deal with this, or is it just what happens when slowing down the audio so much. I am using cecilia 5 to stretch at about 300-400, but ive also been experimenting with the reason granular synth a bit.
@VenusTheory4 жыл бұрын
Yo! Well, it's really hard to say without watching the step by step. However, if you're playing several notes do keep in mind that stretching them does stretch out the entire melody so the key never changes, but some notes may not play nicely with others as the track goes on above the pad layers. Stretching shouldn't result in any change in pitch as long as you're not applying any detuning or pitch modulation.

Great tutorial, how would you tie these pads in to chord progressions? Do you usually play whole chords with the pads? Obviously with the granular one, the chord is already kind of in the pad
@VenusTheory4 жыл бұрын
Yo! Well, one good way to do it is create the pad using just a single note with the granular version (or use the same note across a few octaves as the source) that way you can use it as a sampled pad to create chords or changes with. Otherwise, I find just letting them 'do their thing' so long as they have enough modulation is good too as these are more often than not droning elements further back in the overall scope/focus of the track.

@VenusTheory4 жыл бұрын
Yo! Great question - drive in this case refers to the amount of input volume increase into a distortion/saturation. So, in simple terms, you're 'driving' the signal harder to get some saturation.
