Make sure you use 1.5mm cable as Daniel did. (not 1.25). To periodically check the extension, use it for an hour and feel the plugtop and socket for excessive heat.
@sko1beer2 жыл бұрын
You are correct I used a normal 30m extension cable and it’s rated at 16amps and it’s getting warm on the plug on my 10 amp granny charger. I think I need to go out and buy a higher amp rated extension cable
@malcolmsutton67402 жыл бұрын
You’ve made a good job of the extension lead, however, the manufacturer’s of granny chargers are so concerned about the plug/ socket overheating that they put a temperature sensor in the plug that switches off the charger if overheating occurs. I believe the overheating would occur in the socket rather than the plug. Beefed up sockets are available as standard ones are not continuously rated.
@dr_jaymz Жыл бұрын
Thats a really good idea. Poor contacts on a normal 13a socket causes a nasty runaway effect which can easily melt the socket. I know this because I melted the socket. It does make you wonder what 13A actually means. They are not even drawing that and still melt.

You said you can make the cable any length you want...voltage drop amperage drop? Over what maximum length can this cable be before the amps drop below your required 10 amps. Next size up cable would allow what length? Sóme people may need something longer than 10m.

Just look this up online. I'm in NA and we use different thickness measurements but generally you move up to the next gauge/thickness every 50ft to reduce resistance.

Thanks exactly what I need to build and had been looking at the same sort of solution so good to see it works. Is there any issues with using the socket box flat vs the wall mounted position with regards to its IP rating? Will probably look to make mine. A bit longer as I’m in a terrace house with on street parking. The two additional steps I need to figure out is how to run the cable outside in the winter as I can’t put an outdoor socket on the house. Plus I’m going to need to get a trip hazard cover for the pavement that will stand up to any complaints.
@daniel_coe Жыл бұрын
I don't think there is a problem keeping the box flat. You could always put a cover over it or put that part under the car etc
@oliver90owner Жыл бұрын
@@daniel_coeI think there is a problem. Avoid extra square 13A three pin plugs and sockets. Better, for a permanent installation, is a 2.5mm^2 three core cable and an in-line connector - just remove the plug on the granny cable and add a suitable length of cable.

Is the bag used to cover the socket when charging ??? or just for storage ?? If its for charging how can it go inside the bag with cables from the mains side and the other side (the granny charger) also is 22 metres ok ?? ...

Just for storage, as the front trunk on the BMW i3 is not watertight.

Very useful video. Just one question: the wet bag, daft one I know, is it for covering the socket, only I see that the socket is waterproof. Thanks.

It's to keep the socket dry as the i3 front trunk where we store it is not completely water tight.

@daniel_coe and you are basing that statemwnt on what exactly? Just wondering as the standatrd 13A 3 pin sockets are NOT safe to use for EV charging at all. Same goes for the one u used on your extension lead too and you proba ly plugged that into a normal 13A socket too. Therw are special 13A EV approved aocket that you can buy and use. Standard non EV marked 13A socket is not built for 20 hours of 10A continuous current. Its a recipe for diaaster that extension lead to be honest. Just fit an external socket that is EV approved even if it is 13A one for granny charger you will not regret it. Contraptions like yours are possibly ok under supervison as an emergency solution. However i would fit an EV approved 13A socket on it and minimum 1.5mm flex. No way i would go to sleep with that on, either...

That's a long cable. I don't know if you'd lose some power over that distance. But certainly worth a go if you can afford around £50+ on cable.

Just move up to the next gauge or wire thickness to reduce resistance. There are standard amps per distance per gauge/thickness that you can search online.
