I never really knew what the device was called mom used to make apple sauce with. Now I know, and it is good to know they still make them. I always called it the apple sauce maker. If you have a cool place to store the canned sauce, instead of a room temp pantry, they will store for a lot longer. But hey, why let that happen? Apple sauce goes so well with so many other foods in a meal. Adding cinnamon to a cold bowl is my favorite. Thank you for this video.

I've canned tons but never thought about applesauce. Not enough in my household eat it, but if I can myself from our own apples, neighbors' , store bought, I can put in whatever size jars I need and eat as I see fit. So easy. I have no idea what apples I am using, as they are my neighbor's, but I will simply add sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, etc. (even apple pie spice!) to taste (they are pretty tart!) Using an apple peeler/corer/slicer and then food processor works as well as a food mill. Thanks!!!

Don't you just love canned foods! I have been a canning fool this summer. Apples are next on my hit parade. Going to do sauce and spiced apple rings. Just finished pickled beets. I am glad you showed how to can because it is so easy and so rewarding. I just love when I hear the "pop" of the jars. Simple pleasures, you know? Wonderful video!!

Thank you for your video, I just moved to the country and inherited a mature apple tree. I had a pretty big storm and the next morning went out with a laundry basket and gathered the ones that got knocked to the ground. I'm looking for things to do with all these beautiful apples! I like your black and white pot holder also, very pretty! Blessings to you sir :)

You know what? I'm an idiot. Seriously, with 4 kids I always had to have huge jars of applesauce, now that there is just my son and myself, I don't need as much, WELL, how about SMALLER JARS!!! Dhhhhh. Where did my brain go? This is just wonderful, now I can rethink everything. It takes a long time to break habits that are over 45 yrs old. That size is Perfect, and this is such a help. You always make light bulbs go off in my head, and I want to thank you for that. I love those apples too. TY

This is a great video, to the point, thanks for that! The only thing I would comment is that the safe canning guidelines say to leave the jars undisturbed for a minimum of 12 hours (12-24 is fine), as opposed to a minimum of 24.

I'm impressed, very clear instructions. I also have a youtube channel and I also try to just give just the instructions and leave out all of the extra comments. My apple trees are 5 years old and last year I canned about 13 quarts of pie filling and applesauce with my daughters help. This year I'm going it alone and I'm estimating 3 times that amount with two trees.

I have never canned it. It's so easy to make, we just make it when we want it. I suppose it would be different if we had apple trees, but that's not my case. We do have an orchard close by (5 blocks) and they don't wax their apples. You do apple butter? Have never made it, and sure would like to learn.

@robertsparling
@robertsparling 8 жыл бұрын
When you boil the jars, there is a pressure buildup inside of them. This allows a bit of air to escape. After the jars cool, there should be a vacuum inside the jars that pulls the lid inward. If the lid is not down, then the jar did not seal properly, and cannot be stored. Test the seal by pressing on the middle of the lid. If you can press the lid down and it pops back up, then the seal is not good. Put that jar in the fridge and eat the applesauce over the next two weeks.

CCJ, to save fuel and water, and keep the kitchen cool, how about boiling and removing the wax serially like an assembly line? Boil water in a small sauce pan and put in one apple at a time, then remove the first apple and wipe its wax off while boiling the second apple, etc.? It only takes a couple minutes longer and you only need boil one quart of water instead of a gallon or more.

you don't necessarily have to boil the jars , you can use the heat from the apple , but you need to work swiftly make the apple sauce as usual but have the jars ( quart or pint) cleaned beforehand put hot tap water in the jars then put the lids and rings on , wet the lids before hand helps to seal better ) then just let the jars alone as they cool down (make sure they aren't on the cold counter or jars will crack/break)

Simply jarring it will not make it last. You must process it (boil the filled jars) in order to make it shelf stable. If you do not want to process it, it must be stored in the refrigerator and be used within 7 days.

what's the purpose of the jar preparation as far as boiling etc
@croutoncrackerjacks
@croutoncrackerjacks 9 жыл бұрын
The main purpose is to heat the jars so you can safely add hot food to them without them breaking from thermal shock. Second reason is to sterilize the jars. You don't *HAVE* to sterilize them according to Ball and the National Center for Home Preserving since they are being processed longer than 10 minutes however I do it anyway. I don't want to take any chances with something being in my jars since I store them for months.To me, since I have to heat the jars anyway before I fill them, may as well boil them for 10 minutes for peace of mind. But it's up to you. But heating them before filling them is not optional. You *will* break jars by filling cold jars with hot food.

when I do tomato sauce, I put my jars in the dishwasher on the high heat cycle. I pull the jars out 2 at a time and fill with sauce. wipe the top and add the seals and rings and put on the counter. with in an hr or so the kids start to pop or seal. Is this an ok practice? I never put them back into the boiling pot for the 20 min when done. any tips or advice is appreciated
