This just took me back to my childhood. We had a family friend named May. She was elderly and made the best homemade applesauce, AND she knew how much I loved it! She would make some, just to be nice. It wasn’t until I was an adult, and she passed long ago that I realized she was having more fun watching me eat it, than I had eating it. It’s strange how food can bring memories rushing back. She used a little cinnamon, a dash of nutmeg, and a lot of love.

I steam the apples (Granny Smith) in a vegetable steamer (with skin) for about 40 minutes and throw them in the Vitamix with 2 tbs of Splenda, 1tsp cinnamon, 2tbs lemon juice. I tried brown sugar on my first batch and didn't care for it. Best applesauce ever, and VERY smooth! A normal blender would probably be almost as good, but not as smooth probably.

I have a recipe that called for applesauce but had none in the house. Just happened to see your video on Making Applesauce. Good thing I have four different apple treez in the garden. I have never made applesauce before so thank you so much for the recipe. I made oatmeal apple raisin muffins with applesauce in the recipe and it was even more flavorful and delicious than canned Applesauce. I also use applesauce as a substitute for oil in a cake recipe so one more reason to make your own applesauce. Thanks for all the little tips you give in your videos.

I love garden apples. My girlfriend has 3 different apple trees in her garden, and neither tastes like any store bought apple I ever had. One has kind of a honey aftertaste, one is really sour, tastes almost like sour apple candy and one is deep red, partly also on the inside and it tastes very sweet, a bit like apple tea. I'm making apple sauce with them today :)

Hi, I've been using your recipes for so long omg ❤️ but with this recipe I change a bit, not the apple sauce but I use the skin and pits to make jelly or jam, apple has a lot of pectin and I really didn't want to waste nothing. I put everything in a pan with water and let it cook, then I discard the pots and skins and keep the clear water (use a filter to separate them, you want that to be clear, no bits, i measure the liquid and add sugar, I use a cup and so for 1 cup of liquid you add 2 measures of sugar (brown sugar looks best imo), so if I need I use a bit of that apple water in the sauce before adding the sugar. I don't add anything to the jelly, just sugar and apple water. But I wanted to thank you for all this years of good recipes and precise measures that consider grams 😍😘

My grandmother used to make apple sauce. She'd make 2 batches at once. The first would be chopped finely and cooked down completely smooth. The second would have really large chunks and barely cooked down at all. Then she'd mix the two together and add a bunch of sugar and cinnamon so that it was super sweet. It was never meant to be healthy lol, just a great dessert. Going to be making the same today!

Nice video. Here in the Netherlands we eat a lot of applesauce (appelmoes). It is used a lot to mask vegetables for the kids. Almost always, cinamon is added. Most used apple here is Belle de Boskoop, especially when the sauce must be chunky. Some people use honey for sweetening.

It sounds like you may have been cooking the apples at too high of a heat. It really doesn't matter whether you are using gas or electric, just have the apples cooking at a simmer. As I say in the headnote "to prevent the apples from sticking to the saucepan as they cook, add enough unsweetened apple juice, cider, or water to cover the bottom of the saucepan. (Add more liquid during cooking if necessary.)"

My freezer gave up the ghost a few days ago so, now I have tons of thawed applesauce! Do you know if cold canning applesauce works? My thought was to pack the cold applesauce in cold jars, placing them in a cold water bath. Bring to a boil, and boil for 20 minutes or so. What do you think? Will that work? Or maybe it'd be better to recook the applesauce and put in hot jars, and hot water bath. I could really use some good advice asap. Thank you. I love your vids!

for those concerned with nutrition, would it be advisable to core the apples, blend or food process them, and then just lightly warm them for a short time? Or even skip the warming altogether, as heat kills nutrients.
@Bee-ol1xr9 жыл бұрын
not at all. this would be a problem if the water used to make the sauce was gone to waste. the water-soluble ingredients/recipes don't have that issue. I mean, people make homemade vegetable stock by (usually) freezing the liquid it formed after letting the veggies cooking in the water for hours and the veggies are the one that "go to waste" in that sense, since all its nutrients went to the stock.

@Ronda Goodlet Doug and Stacy has on their KZbin a variety of things that you could possibly do. Here's what I do: Peel, core, slice Peels go into the water bath just like you would put your apples to prevent them from turning brown. Then I pull them out of the water and shake them to get as much water off as possible. Then I placed them in my dehydrator. Oncefully dried I placed them in a jar with a good lid. After that you can crunch them up as you need them to help flavor Apple breads or apple oatmeal, anything that you would use apple pieces and you could use the peels. In turn I used the course to make homemade apple cider vinegar. To me this takes the longest time. Then with the slices I put some in my dehydrator for fresh apple chips. The rest I put in my crock pot to make the applesauce with.
