No problem. I have been doing some more research on this style of jewelry and found that there is a different way to go about doing it. I'm working on a way to make it affordable to everyone. The setup I have found to do this cost $400+ Just to get started. I'm working on a way to get a similar setup for around $60-$80 I will be making a video in the next week or two.

I'm a little lost on what you mean. Are you talking about how you can see the little bit of silver when you solder two things together?
@GomeowCreations8 жыл бұрын
If you use copper with silver solder, It will always show. One way I have found to hide it is to copper plate the work. If you use silver and silver solder, after buffing you will not be able to see the solder at all. For brass the same thing will happen but you can't plate brass over it, but there is a way to cover it will brass though. I can make a video the cover both of these soon, if you like.

GomeowCreations I really enjoyed this. (Apart from the stupid question about American English lol) I really like the way this came out and I really like the way you put the thing together as it appeals to my idea of what looks nice. I like the slightly rustic look and this fits with what I am aiming for with the jewellery I make. I am just waiting on weather to finish my workshop up in Scotland where there's no neighbours to get annoyed by the smoke detector or hammering. (I still work down here in London but the stuff I really like is confined to the new workshop which should be finished by June so I can go up and work as much as I want without annoying anyone because my cabin/workshop is in the middle of our woods. And when I am at home in London I can work on stuff that doesn't annoy anyone. Thanks for this video, I would have tended to buy the bezel wire but I will try this out because it would give me more freedom as to the size of stone etc. I really love copper but I do work with silver and I'm going to try doing some stuff with gold in the summer. I'm really grateful for videos like this and if and when I make anything using what I learned here, I will tag you on Facebook or wherever I post it. Thanks again (that question about the word across has really been bugging me...its like everyone says it so I need to find out if it's another word like color/colour because the two varieties of English are growing further apart.

The bezel is created when copper “grows” around the stone with electricity. It’s a loooong process but the outcome looks like that heart ring.

You can get copper solder now. It comes in just one hardness I think. It melts a little darker than shiny copper, but if you're oxidizing it won't show. It's pretty hard so you have to be careful on a thin bezel, but I've never had other components come apart while using it. And much less melting than with sterling or fine. PS I love this tute, will give it a try.
@GomeowCreations7 жыл бұрын
+icatz I have used copper solder and I didnt like it that much. It lacks the control of having different temps but one way to cover thr silver solder is to copper plate the item. You can do this with out any expensive tools or electricity. :)

Just have a look at one of my newer videos to see how I did it.

Hi. To perfectly straight a thin wire or a thin strip of copper or silver, you can clamp one end in a vice and then grab the other end with a pair of pliers and pull it a bit until you will feel a small relaxation in the metal. Do not force it. I guarantee you a perfectly straight piece. It is important to be annealed and also do not pass over that small relaxation point you will feel at some point. It is an easy and very effective method.

Any tips or help on this would be great :) Thanks!

Thanks for your reply :) I knew the bezel was tall enough when I tried a ring with a taller bezel (plenty tall) and had the same problem... until I got a bezel roller and I was able to push the bezel around the stone a lot tighter and that did the trick! Sorry it took so long to get back to you. I coat all of my copper, brass and silver jewelry in Renaissance wax. This being said the wax will come off over time and the metals will start to patina. You can try clear enamel paint but if you have a polished finish the paint will peel off. I have used something called "Midas Clear Lacquer Sealant and Tarnish Inhibitor" from riogrande.com This lacquer has the same problem with peeling if your item is polished. I have used it on some brass that I used a steel wire wheel on to get some texture on it. After letting it cure for 2 days the coating didn't peel off. Anyways, I hope that helps a little. If you have any more questions, feel free to ask.

Suggestion... I use to work making stained glass using the copper foil method. The copper foil comes in rolls of differing widths & it will work fine for this stone. If the foil is a little too wide for the stone... just cut it down like you did when you cut the copper strip off the blank. The good part about the copper foil is that it has a sticky side that you would put against the stone which holds it in place. Wrap the foil strip around the sides of the stone, then fold a teeny bit & burnish down on the back of the stone... & then burnish it on the sides & at the top as it bends a little with the curve of the stone. Burnishing can be done with a popsicle stick... or a pencil or something. THEN you can just finish the ring like you did by soldering the stone part to the ring. The only difference is you'll want to make the solder flow all over the copper foil & make sure you solder the sides & bottom part that touches the ring... TO the ring. By making the solder flow all over the copper foil, it makes the foil bezel strong so it won't peel away or come off. At that point it will be silver colored... so all you have to do after cleaning it is add some copper patina to it & it will look copper again. I've made several rings this way. You can get the copper foil & the copper patina at any stained glass supply shop... or on line.
@GomeowCreations8 жыл бұрын
Well thank you for all of the info. I will have to look into that later. One question though, how hot can you get this foil before it melts? I ask just because I use mostly hard and med silver solder and they have melting points of 1300 degrees I believe.
@lindamurray92018 жыл бұрын
Hi. :) I'm not really sure... but I always just use about an 80 watt soldering iron which heats up to 900 degrees and it does fine. I also SOMETIMES use it with a temp controller... but not always. I've never yet used any kind of torch for anything. When attaching the foil wrapped cabachon to another COPPER object I have to heat the copper object FIRST till it's hot enough.. then add the cab/foil to it with the solder. If I'm attaching it to Zinc or lead I don't have to do that.

Nice video, I like to ask you, what is the best solder to use for jewelry making? I bought Lead free rosin core solder at Lowes. Is electrical solder and it says for general wiring applications. Is that okay to use for jewelry as long as is does not have lead? I was not able to find any at the craft stores around here, but only the one used for stain glass and that has lead on it.

+Flair4Crafts you can use that solder but is is very weak and can be easily broken. If you want a strong solder point you need silver solder. You can order it online at riogrande.com look for hard, med and easy wire solder. You will also need some handy flux.

I love a variety of crafts and like to explore new ideas. I do wire rings and each one is its own unique design. How do you feel about using a solder iron for making jewelry? I have a weller medium duty 60 watt. I am new to solder and smiting but have great interest in learning new stuff. Thank your for taking the time to help
@GomeowCreations7 жыл бұрын
+Flair4Crafts If you are talking about a propane touch, they will work just fine for starting out. I don't suggest using the solders you can get from local hardware stores. As for using a soldering iron, to make is so solder will stick to things the object and the solder need to be hot. When I 1st started I tried to use a soldering iron and lead free silver electoral solder. That didnt work out to well and I wish I started with a torch and the rigjt solder. Just as an example, electronic solder will flow around 400° and jewelry quality sold flows around 1300°+. Also jewelry grade solder can be up to 75-80% silver if I'm remembering right, and electronic silver solder is lick 5-20%

Could you make a video on how to attach a bail to a pendant you've created? or is it just easier to put a hole punched in :D
@GomeowCreations7 жыл бұрын
+Ta Meu Bem what do you mean by already created? Do you mean the stones are alread set in the pendant or they have not been set and you can still solder it?
@TaMeuBem7 жыл бұрын
Ahhh. I mean, how you attach a bail to a bezel plate. Watching and learning with you, I see that you use different grades of solder along the process (hard, med, easy). I guess my question is, do you add the bail as the last step with easy solder? I'm a total novice by the way and I've been studying and researching for the last year before I take a mini-course next month. Your videos have all been clear visually, sound wise, and you do a great job of giving tips and tricks, plus you are a great artisan. Really your videos are so amazing and i'm thankful as a self taught beader who is feeling the calling to work with fire :D
@GomeowCreations7 жыл бұрын
Yes, adding the bail is done as the also solder point, before you put any stones into your bezel. I have a video that shows me adding a bail to a pendent but I didn't solder it shut, it should still be a helpful video. kzbin.info/www/bejne/gYiseJpnlMifgpY&lc=z13qd5gpkzfgd1hmw233v5x5blfmj33cx

5:46 you can make it bigger by tapping it with a hammer on a mandrel.
@GomeowCreations6 жыл бұрын
Yes you can it with stretch out the metal a little nap e make the bezel a little bigger. Just make sure not to do it too much or too hard because you can make it too big and you can make the metal very thin.

@@GomeowCreations Hello, I bought Foredom, a 130 peepe rolling Mill. a bending tool. for rings I wanted it for spoon and forks for bracelets. also jump ring maker. actually the jump ring maker came with the foredom. I also got a round disc cutter Im not sure where my husband got it from its a peepe tho. it was a gift from him. the ring bender didn't come with the taller nylon disc like yours did. So I bought a fair amount of items. Im making payments to my husband . actually to our savings of $50. a month. lol its true. I enjoy watching your videos and it was kind of you to respond to my comments. I did not expect to hear from you. I did ask them at peepe if I could get a discount since I was buying so many things. they said free shipping and next purchase I could get 10% discount. but I won't be able to buy anything else until I pay off my loan. so that didn't help. but thank you kindly for your reply and I will continue to watch you. your a good teacher. My name is Maureen but everyone calls me Mo. stay well
@GomeowCreations4 жыл бұрын
Oh wow that is a lot of stuff and the ring bender has a option when you order to add on those parts that you are missing for an extra charge. I should have been a little more clean about that, sorry 😅. As for any freebies or discounts, sadly I have no control over that seeing that I work with pepetools but not for them. Basically I hope promoted the products and make a small commission if people use my links or code to buy things. Don't get me wrong I do like the products they supply me with and I will tell you if there are things I don't like about them. It sounds like you did get kind of get a good deal with the free shipping seeing that if you used my code you would only save $30 aka on that order it would have been less than 3% and I'm sure shipping would have been way more than that. Also if you got everything at one time, I don't see any affiliate credit on my account for it but that's ok I'm happy that you got yourself some nice tools. If you have any questions about using them, feel free to ask me 😁👍
@maureenchandler82144 жыл бұрын
@@GomeowCreations Thanks for your kind reply. I just assumed every one got free shipping. had I known then about your 30% I would have used it for sure. I haven't used the foredom yet because I saw someone online not to leave it hanging down as you can hurt the attachment. so Im not sure if I should lay it down. also heard not to bend the chord too much. so Now Im scared of breaking it. so I haven't even plugged it in yet. Ive had it nearly two weeks. not sure of the date but about that. thakyou also I would like to ask you questions. Im in the process of making my brother a bear claw necklace. I have cleaned the claws and getting ready to make the part that will cover the top of the claws. sorta like a box with a lid. if I have difficulty I will contact you. do you have an email address? also when I melt my silver scraps don't I have to use Map gas. Ive heard propane isn't hot enough. Im waiting for the cursable to get here. first I have to clean the grease off and then oil it. Im not in a hurry to use it. but Im pretty excited about it. I haven't made alot of things if I knew how to load photos I would send you a few photos of some pieces. I only know how to send them on messenger. Im re doing one piece that I took apart. just need to put a new bail on it . Thanks again. I will keep watching. Maureen.

Oh I don't have a 30% discount it's a $30 so it's really not much when it comes to very large orders like yours. Also a lot of places don't offer free shipping, I think Amazon has got a lot of us used to free shipping haha. Also yes you need map gas at a minimum for melting down metals. Here is my email I well help when I can. gomeowcreations@gmail.com Also I lean my flex shaft hanging or on my work bench all of the time and I have never had a problem with it.

Actually, it's better and easier to have a tight bezel that you have to make bigger than it is to have a loose bezel that you have to make smaller. If you need to make it bigger after soldering, you just put the bezel wire on the metal mandrel and hit it with a rawhide mallet to stretch it, whereas you have to cut and resolder a bezel that is too large for the stone.

3:50 "throw that piece away"...that's why I don't support hobby-jewelers. You never throw anything away. A true professional will save the scraps and re-melt them or re-use them later. The earth no longer makes this stuff. Shame on you.
@GomeowCreations Жыл бұрын
You might be overacting just a little bit. But at the same time I could have worded that a little bit better. Seeing that I didn't throw any of the stuff away I keep all my scraps in different containers to reuse later like you're saying. That was one of my very first KZbin videos over 6 years ago.
