Old head here. There's a long tradition of crate digging and picking just based on the album cover. Many great samples have come from that. You're only limited by your willingness (or lack of) to get creative. Y'all got so so SO many new tools and guides nowadays that we only dreamed of back then. Use them! You got this! Make something we ain't never heard!

There is a Rick Rubin quote that I like, that fits here nicely. "The true magic of the creative process is that there's no magic, you simply set aside time and start working. It's like fishing you know, you can you can go out fishing, but you can't say i'm gonna catch three fish today you know? We have very little control over this process, you just have to start fishing"

Also….this is why all 90s producers had a signature sound. They had different samples and build own kits. Now everyone is using the same sounds

As a modern producer I like downloading hella drum kits and using whatever I feel like. That helps me make interesting drum/melodies combination

Can we even use samples like how they did in the 90s?

True story man! Sometimes I find even 5 dope samples in a row, but I won’t get anything done with them. It’s not about the sample. It’s about the right mood and the creativity.
@InsideOutBeats Жыл бұрын
Definitely! You mentioning mood is so important as the same sample could turn out way different multiple times depending on your state / mood and creativity

Go for the song not for the sample multiply samples are the key to finishble works
@Jacqueal Жыл бұрын
It depends on the headspace you're in creatively too. You can hear a sample one day and not be inspired to do anything with it. Then time will pass and you'll hear that sample in a different way because you were in another creative headspace. It happens to me all the time. That's why I never discard records even if they sound like duds at first.

Agree a good producer can make a beat out of anything, no matter what, as long as there's some sounds. Another fun exercise is to take a record that has been sampled before in one of your favorite songs and try to flip it different than the original. Even better if you can find a totally different section to flip that has never been used before.
@Drrolfski Жыл бұрын
Making a single random record work. You should make a series out of this because this is actually more valuable than Rhythm Roulette. It really forces you into creativity.

Love the creativity and message Kirk. Creating within defined limits is major game. There's beauty in being able to be frugal in regards to obtaining material things and still finding new inspiration from the same source, again and again. If this is your ethos, then a couple of suggestiions: you can crate dig at a thrift store. Someone's grandfather kicked it and all the records that wouldn't sell just get tossed there. You can pick up the weirdest stuff you won't find anywhere else. The next thing is to call all the record shops and ask them if they ever blow out the inventory that's sat for years. Sometime's they'll do a dollar sale on all the unknown janky stuff that won't move. If they aren't interested, tell them you'll do a Benjamin for 50 records that they want to get off the shelf or out of storage. Here's the thing, the more interesting the album cover is, the more interesting samples you'll find from people no one has ever heard of.
