In the early 1990s, I lived in Heerlen, the Netherlands on a work assignment to start up a manufacturing plant. I then travelled there for about a decade to provide support. I still remember how wonderful the Rijstevlaai was! Our favorite bakery in Kerkrade nailed the process, baking the filling until it was barely set and still wonderfully creamy. It was then topped with whipped cream and lightly with chocolate shavings. I still think it was one of the best desserts I have ever eaten! If you ever are looking for a new recipe for a video, I would love to see that. The crust recipe in this video will be very helpful as I pursue learning how to make it. I really appreciate your videos of Dutch and Indonesian foods. The recipes are so clearly presented along with tips which may not be in the original written recipes but which you’ve discovered and share. When visiting relatives in NL, I was interested to try the vlaai but got sidetracked by the Appeltaarten! :) (Not to mention the tompoezen, mokka gebak etc. etc.) I’ll definitely need to try making this. The apricot and rijste vlaaien also sound intriguing.

Ziet er heerlijk uit. Ga ik zeker proberen wanneer ik verse appels uit de tuin heb. Zou ik de appels kunnen vervangen met perzik en voor de rest je recept volgen? Ik heb een perzik boom en over een paar dagen heel veel perziken 😅

Dat kan wel, maar zorg er wel voor dat het te nat is… dus misschien de vulling iets aanpassen. Perzikken hebben veel meer vocht dan appels.

The trickiest part for me is removing the vlaai from its solid-edge pan! How did you manage?

The tart pan has a removable bottom, so I just push it up.
