Also helps to switch off your mind and switch on the welder and let it flow.Overthinking will just frustrate you as you likely won’t have all the parts you need.

Hey kevin, how do you tell what scrap steel is weldable and whats not weldable ? Is some sort of device to tell you ?
@KevincaronSculpture4 жыл бұрын
I can't really answer this question. Not sure how to tell the difference. Other than cast aluminum I have never found a piece of metal in my line of "work" I could not weld. I am sure someone smarter than me will chime in here with the correct answer.

I find comic books help! think outside the box so to speak.. Or even look at someones work and try to copy it from one quick look. Your unique style will work it's way in to to design and piece will become your own very quickly.

its called the eye for potential. i have the gift of gab as well among many other things including skills. your a genius for scrapping your scraps for money and more materials. i dont have an imagination per say i cant see something i havent saw except for a dream yeah its weird. but i can see potential in things as i know what their used for and can be used for otherwise so it gives me ideas too.

Love it! Thank you! What welding process do you use on rusty metal? Or do you grind off the rust in areas you intend on spot welding? (I'm a first semester welding student.)

Can't weld rust. I use a flap disk and grind to shiny metal before I weld.

Do you find that rust isn't as horrible do to being so dry where you live? I live in south Alabama and the humidity destroys metal like crazy. Seems like the rust isn't as bad there.

I am in Glendale AZ. May I ask where you get the big welding bottles in the background. Do you remember how much they cost? Thank you.
@KevincaronSculpture7 жыл бұрын
Look for a shop that does the hydrostat testing. Or sometimes you can find them at the scrap yard. The cost runs from $20 to 25 dollars depending on the size.
@Jworonow7 жыл бұрын
Kevin after hitting your link and seeing many wonderful outdoors sculptures a question arises. What type of paint and is it topcoated but most importantly, do you offer repainting with UV fading? I powder coat and the $$ really hurt the bottom line. Rust bullet is great but hard to clean the tools.
@KevincaronSculpture7 жыл бұрын
I will use both powder coat as well as auto paint. Even used patinas on a few pieces. The powder coat and paint are both UV rated and should last for a very long time.. Except the "red" colors, out here they just turn pink in a few years from the sun. Have been contacted a couple of times about re-coating a piece that's been in the sun for a while. Pulled the pieces and re-coat and reinstall...

Again, thanks for the info and prompt reply. There is a book, always is, "A Universe of Metal Sculpture" by Henry Harvey they talk about 'jet flux' finishes, most remarkable things I have ever seen. Anyhow, a book that I would highly endorse for both some strange techniques and design. Thanks again -- weld-on!

Don't know if the reply was to me or Kevin but it was e-mailed to me so let me say. It is the 'fun trying' that is most important. Kevin, you are lucky, i live in a smaller california town 200 miles from anywhere and it is a place where the powers that be have been aggressively forcing people with gestapo like tactics to remove anything even remotely resembling scrap of any kind from their properties which might sound like opportunity except our local scrap metal recycling place will not sell or trade any scrape metal, to make the situation even worst they have made it highly illegal to remove anything from our local land fill which they enforce with a heavy hand. i have rescued some thing from there but am literally risking jail time every time i do it. i'm just sharing so you will know not to take any piece of scrape for granted because this kind of oppression could happen anywhere.....

Kevin Caron, Artist A match made in heaven. A woman with a welder is a rare thing. There is a school district program in Green Bay, WI called "This Girl Can", mainky for 7th grade girls or so to introduce them to the traditional trade jobs. One is welding, and the mother does the welding alongside her daughter.
