Ive been saving up sprue to make some panels for random projects. One of the things you didnt touch on, thats most important is that the scraps / failed pieces can be just added back to the vat and reabsorbed into the sprue goo hive mind.

Great. My son has a heap of these sprues. I will rescue them into sprue goo. I just made two 1/18 scale workshop hoists for my diecast model cars using styrene sheets. I can now fit two cars in a one car space in my display cabinet. Your models are really well done. I made a mini oxy acetylene cart using kneed it epoxy for the gas cylinders, coathanger wire and matchboxy car wheels for the trolley and some electric wire for hoses. Good hobby

You are making some amazing stuff! Question though. My wife and I are trying to make our own "sprue goo." We have had a jar of sprue bits sitting in 100% acetone nail polish remover for about three days now, and the bits have not melted down. The jar is sealed, and we haven't done anything more than shake up the jar occasionally. Is there something we are missing? Edit: Ok, I think we figured it out. The first acetone we tried had three other chemicals mix in with it. We shopped around, and found another brand with just Acetone and Denatonium Benzoate (make the chemical taste bad, so it's not accidently swallowed). We tried the second acetone and we started seeing immediate results. We should hopefully have sprue goo in a few hours!

Great stuff. I bought some acetone and have started my first tentative forays into dissolving plastic. I don't have access to sprues so I am investigating what other household products are made out of high impact polystyrene. Seems like I need to look for the number 6 recycle symbol. So far I found some ice cream scoops, disposable razors and ballpoint pens. The scoops are goop. Not tried the other two yet. Thanks so much for the inspiration to make even more mess out of which comes some cool table top terrain.

Keep up the good work. Note to self, don't throw out the next empty jar :)

Eventually I cut all mine down into brick sized bits, toss them in my coffee grinder, and beat the hell out of them to make them look like actual bricks. Beofre they are bricks they are usually painting handles for things like heads and shields. I'll cut them about 3 inches long, carve down one end a bit, and use a plastic welder to glue them to the head or shield. After that though they get turned into bricks.

I went & bought the stuff & created a batch of goo. However each attempt to roll it flat under the wax paper has met with failure. So I have several questions I hope you can answer. 1) Are you able to use any sprue? Or is it just the GW sprues that seem to work. I have almost a powerdery effect of goo atop the other stuff from using a range of sprues including plastic model kit ones. 2) I roll out the sprue to make it flat, however when trying to peel back the paper after waiting some time, the plastic sticks to the paper & lifts, sort of like gum on your shoe. What causes this? The plastic also sticks to the cookie sheet requiring a scraper to remove. 3) I am guessing that your wanting to use non painted sprues. There are quite a few people who prime or spray their models while on the sprue. I look forward to reading your responses. Thanks

Hi Terry, I primarily build aircraft and armour from all makes and brands and I’ve used all to successfully make spruegoo. Can’t comment about the effects of paint but I’d imagine the acetone would break it down. I must experiment! All the best, Ian

Tried making sprue goo. My nibbly nobbly bits have been sitting in 100% acetone for a week and a half, and while they're softer, they still don't seem to be gooifying. The bits are cut very small, and there's plenty more acetone than bits. I'm not entirely sure what's going wrong.

For complex molds -- have you considered filling the mold with acetone before adding the sprue goo? I notice that the goo seems to settle down through acetone, so it seems like you might be able to dissolve the goo into smaller details. Of course, the acetone might damage the mold as well...
