🔬 How to make better pictures with a microscope | Amateur Microscopy

I show you how to use the levels tool in gimp and Pixlr to improve the contrast of pictures taken through a microscope. Sometimes the images look hazy or too dull. By enhancing contrast using the Histogram, the images become much better.

I suggest Fiji: ImageJ. It's a free open-source software with lots of resources for beginners and advanced users.

Hi Oliver, it would be interesting a review of Paul de Kruif's masterpiece "Microbe Hunters". This terrific book influenced the young Albert Bruce Sabin( “the book gave me a picture of what science meant to man.”). He became a microbe hunter thanks also to this reading. Thanks for your fantastic videos!

Thanks for the suggestion, I bought the book! I have already heard about it but did not get it yet (up to now). There is another book that I can recommend (which I read) and this is "Power Unseen: How microbes rule the world" by Bernard Dixon.

Hi oliver If I want a magnification of 600, would 10x eyepiece X 60x objective give the same quality of image as 15x eyepiece X 40x objective? I am asking this because I already have 10 and 15 eyepieces but I am not sure on which objective to buy.

Theoretically the 10x/60x combination would produce a better result, because the 60x has a higher Numerical Aperture (value printed on the objective) and this value determines the resolution. The difference would become much more visible when using more extreme values (such as a 25 eyepiece and a 20x objective, which would have a similar total magnifiction).
