I had my first go at making iron gall ink today. I bought the ingredients through Amazon as a first try because some of the items are out of season at this time. I did get an acceptable ink, though some qualities are lacking. I'll keep trying with variations and see what I can get out of it. Even with my first try, I can see why this was the go-to for most people who's profession was writing. If you're willing to experiment, try it for yourself. I'm giving my first ever experiment with this type of ink to my Doctor (with an explanation). I hope he likes it.

Is your ink better now or is the recept of the tutorial bad?
@StarSong936 Жыл бұрын
@@preci777 I've tried several variations on the amount of ingredients in the ink. Gum arabic helps with the suspension of lamp black in the mix. For best results writing with it, shake it up before use, and use a reed pen, a twig with a pen tip carved into the end, or a quill pen. Do not use a metal pen as the ink will eat the metal. I've also used a glass pen with just the tannic acid with acceptable results. Have fun experimenting. If you wish to produce your own tannic acid, you can boil acorns, walnut shells and husks, pecan shells and husks, or if you have access to oak galls, boil those.

the black powder is carbon, meaning you need incomplete combustion to make it. incomplete combustion occurs when the flame doesnt have enough oxygen (which does produce carbon monoxide, so don't breathe it in) by holding something close to the flame, it becomes unsaturated and the object gets covered in black powder
@ModalSoul6 жыл бұрын

Rio Lynn Cartusiano it is the most common type of a binder. I know it is used in watercolors too. Purpose? Maybe so the pigment does not separate or for water not to evaporate fast? Not sure... for watercolor is also to thicken it.

Is it possible to make ink out of blood. This is a serious question, I have a gross idea. It's making ink out of my own blood.
@josezuniga37473 жыл бұрын
It's possible but the blood will likely dry up and turn crusty, so it's not the best way to make ink, I was thinking the same thing
@Luckingsworth2 жыл бұрын
I think if you wanted to do it seriously for a real project, your best bet would be to extract the blood, lay it out thinly (perhaps on an old baking sheet), allow it to dry fully, and then pulverize and turn the dried blood into a powder to add to the alcohol. That way your ink will dry quicker, flow better, have a more concentrated color, and it will allow you to extract a safe anount over a long period of time to aquire enough to do what you need to do. Test it out with pigs blood first to see if it works.
