How To Make Bonsai from Lemon Cypress

Hi Adam, I grew up in Japan from 68 thru 79 so Bonsai was no stranger to me. Though I had tried my luck throughout the years/decades, it was the pandemic that has gotten me back into being serious about Bonsai. I tried several FB groups/forums dealing with Bonsai, most turned out to be pompous a#@ and members more into celebrating themselves than actually sharing the joy of Bonsai. I stumbled across your channel and that of Peter Chan on KZbin and you have and still are giving me what I have looked for, the inspiration, the courage and the curiosity to trial and error. Next to one poor elm and a ginseng benjamina, all my plants are ordinary nursery stock or cuttings. Thus I am much into experimenting and enjoy your videos and the thoughts you share. Thank you and keep up the great work!

Hey Stephan, I am not a fan of gatekeeping Bonsai techniques and of course there is nothing wrong with making mistakes in Bonsai as this is how we all learn! Every Bonsai master was once a beginner who made their own mistakes! And often times, mistakes on trees can make them look even more beautiful and unique as time goes on! Peter Chan is a wonderful teacher who I have also learned a lot from and I really admire how welcoming he is to beginners! There is totally nothing wrong with nursery stock, with some time they can become excellent Bonsai! Thank you for the support and welcome back to the wonderful world of Bonsai! 😊🪴

Oh son! This is the best you've done! The photography is spot on. I've got a few twin trunk trees( say that 3 times fast) and I hated to split them. But now, I'll sacrifice one . I'm inspired! Once again, the photography is the on money. I live on the Oregon coast where the weather is a lot like yours. Goldilocks zone for bonsai. Keep it up!

Personally I don’t like Jin, but that’s what so great about bonsai, everyone can do whatever they like to their trees, there is no right or wrong😁 Different style of trees is what makes it interesting too! Needless to say though this tree turned out looking great!

I believe I did this operation in mid summer! Just on a side note, any branch in which you leave no foliate that is likely to die off so keep foliage on the branches you want to keep alive!

Adam, very informative video. I humbly suggest for a future video might be the topic of "when to loosen or remove the wiring." This is a most important topic as left too long creates scoring in the bark...not attractive. Thank you keep these videos coming!

Those little lemon cypress strike from cuttings very easily too, even large sized pieces without rooting powder. I had a few last year root in my compost waiting for the compost pick up 😂😂Don’t forget to advertise your new products too I will take stick tomorrow and make an order.

It‘ll be interesting to see how the deadwood will be doing in the Future with this species. It somehow has some traits of Juniper, some of Thuja and some of Tamarisc. Interesting tree.

Yes! This started as a regular garden centre piece of material that I only styled once before this video 😁 Bonsai does not always have to be super expensive to have fun!

Extreme heliotropic species. New growth will be 90 degrees upward on the pads. I trim mine about 3 times per season which very quickly compacts the pads. Looking forward to seeing progress on this one!

They have these now for xmas along with dwarf spruce. Is it ok to prune and repot both now in November? Live in Northern California, doesnt snow and rarely freezes. Love your videos and appreciate the qay you explain all the details

Hey Mary! Yes this will be more than enough to sustain the tree, so long as we do not ring the tree by cutting the entire way around the trunk that interrupts the flow of sap, then this tree should be very healthy!

Are you sure that it is fired akadama? It looks a lot like Seramis, which is perfect for bonsai cultivation.

Hi! What kind of juniper do you have? Not all junipers get scaly foliage. To get this the tree has to be really healthy and I have found if it is slightly pot bound, it goes scaly quicker. Lots of light too 😄

Hello Adam, I usually love what you do but in this instance I have to disagree with the general consensus on this one. Although the first branch originates from lower on the trunk than the second branch, the second branch has an upward growing orientation which gives a barbell appearance, which is extremely undesirable in bonsai. This error is further highlighted as my eye can not move past where your first branch originates from. It appears to originate from an internal curve of the trunk. I personally think you did not make the best decisions on this one...........just my thoughts

Hi Louie! Thank you for sharing your thoughts. I truly appreciate your passion and the detailed feedback you've provided. Bonsai is such an intricate art form, and it's natural that different eyes will see different things, especially when it comes to something as subjective as tree design. I know what you mean about the barbell appearance. Because one branch emanated from the trunk higher than the other, I was happy with this design for the moment. The beauty of Bonsai is that even as the tree grows, we can always come back and correct any mistakes. In this instance, I was working with what the tree was providing me in the design that I wanted. As it develops more foliage, it may even grow a branch in a better position for me to cut back to and replace the one that is there 😊 Thanks again for your honesty and for being a part of this journey with me!
