I worked in a metal foundry making molds, pouring iron, aluminum, brass. It was a modern shop with tools to lift the pouring bucket and molds. These men are skilled and doing very good work with what they have.

Looks like old engine oil, also probably what they're mixing with the sand. Fine to burn, not good on the skin.
