About the drum sample selection: they're TR-707 samples, which CB uses heavily. They sound acoustic because they are indeed digital samples of acoustic drums, originally sampled at quite a lo-fi sample rate/bit depth. They have that characteristic tight, dry, punchy sound of 80s digital drum machines, like the famous LinnDrum, which Roland was trying to emulate/undercut with the 707. Other examples of 80s digital drum machines with this sort of sound are the Oberheim DMX and DX and the Sequential DrumTraks. My two favorites are the LinnDrum and 707 though. These samples always require A LOT of processing to sound fat, but when done right, nothing else sounds quite like them. I like to give the kicks a Pultec EQ treatment to fatten the low end and tighten up the mids and highs (that EQ is uniquely suited to this task). The snares require a boost at the fundamental frequency to sound fat, either a regular bell EQ boost, or a resonant highpass filter work well. Then another little boost at 5-10KHz for the high grit. I like to then add more transient punch to the snare with a DBX 160 compressor emulation (it does this one job beautifully, and that's about all it does well). SSL Bus Compressor emulations, like Ableton's Glue compressor, also work well for this task (attack at 3 or 10ms to bring out the transient). Then I parallel compress the crap out of the drum bus with an 1176 emulation in "all buttons" mode, which adds grit and drive. Some kind of overdrive or saturation obviously works well too, either before or after the compressor.

Good info! Thank you. I end up going back to articles on how things were written after I make these videos. Part of the challenge and requirements, which I often accidentally leave out is that I don't do any research beforehand - focusing on getting the sound right purely with my ears.

Drum bus breakdown..... After the Drive stage, the signal is split into three frequency bands behind the scenes: Lo, Mid and Hi. The Low part of the signal is piped into the Boom section, which is a Voice-Of-God-style non-linear resonant high-pass filter. Push up Boom to add new sub bass content. You can tune the Frequency of this filter with the knob.

Hey man its the first time I'm watching your tutorials, nice video! Just one question, earlier in the video you said this type of music like CB has no dynamic range. Are you saying this because his tracks are heavily compressed?
@GARDNSOUND
@GARDNSOUND 5 жыл бұрын
Yes, sort of. I wouldn't say that compression is the culprit; more like he limits things and pushes enough gain into them that the sounds are all the same perceived volume. Make sense?

So after a few tries at following the settings you pumped into Massive for that EPIC bass sound, I started to notice the settings kept changing every time Massive came up on the video, and then it dawned on me you have multiple tracks lmao. Is there any way you'd be able to share how many tracks and what the specific Massive settings are for each man? I want to play with this sound so bad but I'm a complete noob at Massive ...I literally got it so I could follow your video!

There is no change in dynamic range between mp3 or lossless.....Get your facts right.
@GARDNSOUND
@GARDNSOUND 3 жыл бұрын
I think you're confusing stylistic range with dynamic range. Stylistically he's pretty varied! I like this guy's music, and I definitely see his compositional prowess on across multiple genres. Dynamic range is when someone's mix doesn't have a lot of headroom versus their softest peak. I.E. they use gain reduction to minimize the difference between their softest part and loudest, reducing the "range" of their "dynamics".

So, out of curiosity, why do you just use the drum samples in raw audio tracks instead of making a drum rack and triggering them through MIDI? Using a drum rack still lets you tweak each sample individually with its own effects/EQ, it makes writing or replicating drum patterns *way* the hell easier, and it's not much more work.

I throw a bunch of loops into FL, some tweaks here and there, and i can compose some awesome music. Art is amateur. Art is subjective. Put someone who spent thousands on gear, spent hundreds of hours vs a person who had a month of play, and put their tracks infront of me and most likely the difference will be subjective.

From Wiki: Franck Hueso, better known by his stage name Carpenter Brut, is a French synthwave artist from Poitiers, France. Little personal information is known about him aside from his French origin. His anonymity is a deliberate artistic choice in order to place more importance on the music itself rather than the identity of the musician behind it. Hueso started writing music as Carpenter Brut with the intention of mixing sounds from horror films, metal, rock, and electronic music.
