I'm American and I made this for the Chinese high school student I'm hosting. She flipped when she saw it, had two helpings, and gave me an excited thumbs up after dinner. I was nervous about this dish because it's so simple and I thought it would turn into a gross mush. It turned out very nice! My husband covered it in sriracha, but he does that to everything. I definitely will be making this regularly. Thank you for posting!

I use garlic, ginger, and vinegar in mine. Sometimes I use salted black beans because it adds an extra salty flavor that I think makes it super good. My dad likes to sometimes put red onions in and caramelize them and it gets extra sweet. It's all good and I love having it with my rice.

no idea what this dish is called but i cook this all the time. Pour chopped dried chili peppers (at least 2) into the medium-high oil. Wait until it's dark brown. Pour chopped napa cabbage or headed cabbage (generally a half. don't want to cook so much of it at once or it gets hard to retain the water). Cook over high heat. Then just top it off with some black chinese vinegar and salt. Very simple.

Very similiar dish to scrambled eggs with tomatoes we eat in Poland. Our version is a bit simpler - first we fry tomatoes with oil and chopped onion on a hot pan, then we add eggs, salt and pepper. No sugar. When we want more hearty dish we fry tomatoes with bacon or sliced thinly sausage. Serve with white bread.

Interesting, we have the exact same dish here in Venezuela, it's called perico, you fry the onions and tomatoes, then add eggs :D Sometimes we add green bell pepper, but I prefer it simpler.

We also have almost the same dish and we call it rizsezs lecsó. White paprika is often added to the dish but the preparation and the amount of rice is what mostly makes the difference - inversely proportional. I like this version, too.

Absolutely LOVE your recipes, and have tried most of them myself to great success from my guests (and a great deal of satisfaction for myself). There are offcourse a ton of channels that specialize in cooking, even that specialize in Chinese cooking, but I must admit it feels (to me at least) more authentic to learn it from an actual Chinese person. Jamie Oliver is a cool guy and all that, but if I had to choose between him and you teaching me chinese cooking, I'd definitely go with you. I do have a question, though: You said that you love rice and just have to have the ricedishes when you eat out. I love rice too, but I do have trouble with feeling very "heavy" after eating rice. Are there any good alternatives to rice that will fit the dishes, but not feel as heavy and filling? Keep up the great work, and keep the good food coming :D Lots of love from Norway

+Lars Stoerloes Thanks for watching Lars :-) to answer your questions, for saucy dishes we typically use rice or Chinese buns. There are those who actually skip out on rice and starch altogether when eating chinese food and elect to make the dishes lighter.

Mikey, my mother passed away in 2005 and her "Tomato Soup" recipe was one of my favorite dishes that I never had a chance to learn how to make. I made this for dinner (and extra for lunch the next day) and it was fantastic! I really appreciated the sugar to salt ratio, which made this dish just the right amount of flavor. I fried the green onion with garlic, and replaced iodized salt with kosher salt (just added a teeny bit more of it though). Came out perfect and very simple yet full of flavor!

From southern China, some are used to prepare this dish with peanut oil. I also do like to use any oil and add some mashed peanuts besides the garlic in thin slices. Both is fried in advance, later on tomatoes are added, togehter with a little bit of vinegar. The cooking time and size of the cut tomatoes depends on preferences; For those who like chunks, cook the tomatoes for less time, for rather saucy tomatoes, they are cooked longer and cut in smaller pieces. Finally, the fried egg is added.

I’m not that surprised that this is actually Chinese Cuisine since a lot of Filipino food are inspired since Filipinos and Chinese are already trading even before the Spanish Colonialism. Strictly Dumpling what a strange experience! it was truly very very good. but whereas I always preferred my tomatoes raw, I loved the tomatoes here. and while eggs are my top 5 favourite things, I felt their natural egginess flavour got completely lost in the tomato. I am considering doing this again, but adding Korean pepper paste, and maybe replacing the eggs with something that can uniquely hold up to the tomatoes (like potatoes! except it will no longer be a super simple dish)

before you cook this dish ,boil the tomatoes for a few minutes and peel off its skin. The flavor is rocketing up . Try that , you are welcome ~~~

I tried this recipe and I have to say that this will become something I will cook more often. Two main reasons among many others. It simple and very light on stomach. Taste is also light and I can see it to combine it with unlimited dishes or just eat alone. Just for curiosity I eat it with plain pizza bases and chicken slices fried in pan and mixed with couple of sauces but results is dried and crispy tender meat which absorbed all tastes. I still have a little at home I can't wait to be back from work to finish it.😋

My mom uses ketchup instead of sugar. It makes the sauce thicker adds to the tomato flavour.

Are you living in China though...? I think I am going to try this out cause the tomatos in china had SO MUCH AMAZING TASTE - while the ones here in europe pretty much taste like water 😒

I live in Canada but I return to Taiwan every year. I've never thought to compare the tomatoes from there and here, but I do think that the ketchup helps to sweeten the sauce while still maintaining the tomato flavour if the tomatoes are watery, though you might just want to cook it for longer to evaporate the water. I also personally like a thicker sauce because it gives it time to soak into the rice instead of just pooling in the bottom of the bowl.

I ate this a lot .I do the seasonings a bit of salt, dark soya sauce, a tiny bit of chile garlic sauce and finished with a drizzle of sesame oil. I eat leftover curry for breakfast so I like strong flavours :) made in a wok. And finished with raw scallions.

We made this for the second time but cut back a bit on the recommended amount of salt, and slightly less sugar, and it was perfection. (The first time I used 3 teaspoons of salt we had to throw it out, as it was way too salty.) Now with the adjustment, we are so happy with the video, and the dish!

I tried it in Chengdu. I was eating other things on the table that I knew before so I kinda ignored it first. It was like the last topping left so I was like "I guess I'll give it a try" and man, what a discovery. I liked it so much I ate it all by myself.

I tried this recipe but with a slight twist. I added a little garlic and hot chili flakes to the cooking oil before the scallions and it was more or less a slightly garlicy hot chili oil! It added some more flavor to the dish! You should try it Mike!
