I know this video is a little shorter than usual but I needed to just get INTO it. I’ll probably format future cookbooks a bit more like a talk show than sound voiceovers, because I much prefer that 😂 anyway, I can’t wait to do more!

Bake tip: Any time you're folding whipped egg whites into a batter, start with just 1/3 of the egg whites. It helps loosen the batter so you don't have to mix in the rest of the egg whites as much. Then you get fluffier cakes.

OMG this was my birthday cake growing up! My mother would make it for me but she would make a fluffy white frosting and then cover it with freshly grated coconut. Yep, she bought a coconut and grated it herself. LOL! Crazy lady. It was soooo good. I can not eat any other coconut cake to this day. I was born in 1969 and have found memories of this cookbook being brought out often. My older sister still has my mother's copy. 💜Awesome video! Thanks for sharing.

I learned to cook from that very same cookbook. The chapter on yeast breads is fabulous, especially the Christmas breads! I made them all as a teenager in the 1970s. Iʻm 66. I donʻt feel vintage, but I guess I am! Love your channel of housewife videos. Your daughter is SO aforable in the outakes at the end of this video!

Thank you Kristina, I love anything coconut! This cake sounds fabulous. I do agree that the filling should have been doubled. Doubling the filling would have soaked the outside coconut topping with yummy goodness. I will bake this cake myself. Thank you for the recipe.

Have you watched the Back in Time For … series out of the UK? There’s one for the Xmas holidays throughout the decades of the 20th Century that features a middle class family (with a Jewish mom, which actually adds a lot). The other is Back in Time For Tea, which follows a working class family. It’s a fascinating look at social history, using food as the starting point. The weirdly named Supersizers Go series is also fantastic interns of using the evolution of food to talk about social history. I’m so glad KZbin brought your channel to my attention. I’m also a fan of vintage cookery and self-help/home advice books. I’m involved in a remarkable number of activities that revolve around vintage picnicking. My partner and I have had some great successes (and hilarious failures) cooking with vintage recipes.

The flour is important when greasing a cake pan because it allows the cake to rise up the walls, allowing it to get fluffier. Just butter or oil means the batter will slide down the sides, making the cake denser. Some modern cookbooks forget to mention the flouring part.

Definitely needs doubling to make it a filling. It reminds me, as is, like a glaze to make the coconut stick.

Great video and I love the series name. To help with the photo finish, put 2 pieces of waxed paper under your cake before you frost or put toppings on. After you're finished with the decorating you can slide the waxed paper out without having to lift the cake and your plate stays nice and clean. I cant wait for more from this series.

Me too, with the addition of a circle of wax paper in the bottom before it’s greased and floured. The wax paper helps de-crumb the bottom when removing. My mom taught me that trick. I think she might have gotten it from my grandma who was a professional wedding cake maker. Grandma made fabulous cakes.

You have such a pleasant voice and an engaging demeanor. Thank you for another beautiful video. Two ideas to keep in the baking tool box that I learned from the women in my family: My mom kept a paper towel in the can of Crisco to use for greasing. Grandma taught me to use the paper wrappers from the butter sticks to grease the cookie sheets. Depression Era cooks.

How lovely that I'm coming across this video today! Today is my mom's birthday. And while I'm already in the process of making cupcakes for her, I just wanted to tell you why this is lovely. When my great grandmother was alive, she would make a coconut cake for my mom's birthday every single year. It's one of her favorite memories. While I was too late this year on looking up a recipe, me seeing this recipe on her birthday might just be a sign! Thanks Kristina!! I love your videos and your style!! ❤❤❤

My mom has that cook book. She was married in 1961 so I’m sure it was a wedding gift. I received the ‘80s edition when I was married in ‘88. She still uses it. The Starlight Cake is the cake she always used to make for my birthday cake. Years later I make the yellow cake out of my ‘80s Betty Crocker for my daughter. Mom and I compared the recipes and there are slight differences. The Starlight cake uses 2T more flour.

But keep in mind since things were generally more physically demanding at the time, it was pretty normal to have a desert made once or twice a week depending on the size of your family just to add calories to ones diet. 😅honestly it wouldn't hurt most of us to have a little icing vs a quarter inch of it on all sides
@JoelleGrace
@JoelleGrace Жыл бұрын
@@akashanumberfive199 Yeah I don’t mind less frosting usually but with some recipes it would barely leave a scraping on the cake!😅 So sometimes I prefer to double it, other times I just frost the top and middle!
@nancybrewer8494
@nancybrewer8494 Жыл бұрын
I certainly could be wrong, but the custard filling usually just goes between the layers. Then you have some other kind of frosting on the outside of the cake. You did say there didn't seem to be enough of the filling. Next time you make it, frosting the outside would be an option. I use Ina Garten's recipe for coconut cake. Best one I've found.
@WithLoveKristina
@WithLoveKristina Жыл бұрын
The recipe specifically said for this cake to use the rest of the filling on the outside of the cake as a thin layer to stick Coconut to. I can’t remember if the voiceover version I used specified that, but I did make it according to the recipe.

There's 2 main types of rice pudding - baked and stove top (also slow cooker). You also should try to find pudding rice (usually short grain, but it's specially grown for use in desserts). It has more starch than regular short grain rice. It's a game changer.
