I shoot contemporary and modern dance, and this video is still the most helpful and applicable one I've seen on shooting dance. Even if you are shooting a more off-beat or creative dance film, almost all of these tips still apply! Thank you!
@withlovee_MJ4 жыл бұрын
This one goes for people asking for tips if you film yourself because you don't have anyone else to help you with the filming. (a lil long but worth reading i promise lol) 1. Use a tripod. Yeah, you can use notebooks or a chair, but tripods allow you better to fix the angle, the height, etc. Not neccessarily a big one, you can use one of those that you can easily carry around, but make sure wherever you put it, it's a flat surface. 2. be really, REALLY careful with the angle and the kind of shot you're using to film yourself. Since you're all by yourself, you don't have anyone helping you adjust the tripod or wherever you put your device to film in, so if you're not careful to make some tests before actually filming, you might waste energy dancing with the best you have and finding out the angle was off or the shot doesn't show your head or feet. 3. You can simulate camera moves with a video editor. A panning to the left or to the right, zoom in or zoom out (these are really common though), but do not overuse them, since it can make the video too shaky and lose charm. When zooming, be careful with the quality, since zooming can reduce quality (the more you zoom in), know the limit and don't go beyond it. Play around with these camera movements to a point where it almost seems natural and fluid and not too obvious you edited it. 4. Glitches and cloning yourself are a huge YAS but if you overuse them they can easily turn into a huge NOPE. Glitches can be good for crucial moments in the dance, DO NOT ADD GLITCH TO THE WHOLE VIDEO SINCE IT CAN BE TOO DISTRACTING. Cloning yourself is also a huuuuuuuGE YAS because it gives it a not so expected surprise, but with this effect you need to be shooting on a wide angle and mostly on a plain bg for the effect to blend perfectly. And last but not absolutely not least... 5. Color correction, lightning, contrast, etc.

That's great. But most of the times I shoot my dance videos myself using a tripod and a smartphone which remains standing at one point. Do you have any tips? Can shooting 2-3 times from different angles help me?
@FightCollective4 жыл бұрын
You can crop and zoom in/out and pan left to right or up and down in post as you edit your vid. This depends on the quality of the original video though as to much cropping will degrade the quality of you image. Here you can see how I used the technique as I zoom onto the ring (@ about 28 secs). That isn't the camera zooming, that's me cropping and zooming onto the ring as I edit the vid. This is a slow zoom but you can get all sorts of effects this way (panning, camera shakes, zooming, cropping...) And yeah shooting 2-3 times from different angles (if you only have one camera). Synch the different clips up in your editing program then cut between the different camera angles. Just make sure you start off at the same spot each time you shoot your dance. You'll also see me do this in my fight videos as that's exactly what I do. I have 3 cams all at different angles/positions. I cut between them to show best fight angle. kzbin.info/www/bejne/bIGoYayAZbKVfaM

I entered a small dance competition online as my first time really dancing and I just had myself, a camera on a tripod, and my hallway. I have a chronic illness that makes it hard to dance or stay upright for too long so I incorporated levels, closeness to the camera, and also using the walls in the hall to help emphasize motions and keep myself upright. I plan to use it again when I film myself. With contests, I'm not sure if they allow editing videos together, but I know I want to play with lighting in some way. It's just a navy blue hallway with some off-white detail which is kind of boring and a little old looking. But not big enough to do much with.

What is a “narrow Aperture?” Like a low one?
@ConstantClockStudios3 жыл бұрын
Narrow Aperture means Higher Number. f/1.8 or t/1.5 = Wider Aperture f/16 or t/16 = Narrow Aperture Just as its phenomena, narrow aperture shoots sharper image with wider focus range. Wide aperture shoots Shallow Depth. :)
