How to Make Custom ERTL Rolling Stock

NOTE TO CUSTOM MAKERS: For the application if the decals, i have since come up with the method of double sided tape. It works a lot better, however is very precise work. if its not straight & you have to peel it off, this will create many creases, which you obviously don't want. & it works better, for ERTL's decals are, of course, stickers.

A very nice tutorial, but I've got a few tips that might help when doing these customs. Instead of using soapy water to remove the original stickers, use either non-acetone nail polish remover or rubbing alcohol. Those will attack the adhesive on the stickers and they should just peal right off. Another advantage is that if you clean the area with either of those 2 things afterwards, you can remove any residue the stickers left behind. I'd also recommend that rather than using regular paper and bluetac, get some regular sticker paper. If you're concerned about the decals being ruined by water, then a quick solution to that is to spray them with a clear coat. This will seal in the ink and you can literally dunk the entire model in water and the ink won't run. I'd still apply the tape over the paper afterwards just so the decals look like originals. I can honestly say I wouldn't mind making some of these customs for myself.

The best way to remove stickers (and how i do it) is to get item outside, spray it in WD-40, and let it soak for about 5-10 minutes. After waiting, get yourself a paper towel, wipe the item and then use a flat piece of plastic to strip the stickers instead of a blade, as those could scratch the surface. If there is some remaining sticker glue on there, use a Cotton tip and aggressively rub over the excess with water. Wipe it several times again, and you got yourself a shell ready for painting.

A very interesting tutorial. While most people would either paint or use water slide decals, making them in a drawing software like Paint is a very unique method.

@@ScrapyardStudios Something I forgot to mention is that I actually have used your method of making the decals in MS Paint even before this video came out. Done it for a years now. The only difference beginning I actually copy and paste the decals into MS Word instead of PowerPoint.

For removing the stickers, it's much, MUCH better to use a hair drier and GooGone instead of warm soapy water and a craft knife, as the heat from the hair drier and the properties of the GooGone will help ease up and loosen the adhesive bonding the sticker to the rolling stock. The GooGone will also help with removing the stickiness left behind from the sticker.

i didnt make a custom rolling stock with your tutorial but i did make a custom locomotive which is 1020 from toby trucks and trouble once 1020 is finished i will do a review on it to my prediction it might be done after christmas because i have to wait for the transfers to get delivered

I’ve come up with a better tactic since this video which is double sided tape. Particularly really thin tape like the stuff from hobbycraft in the UK. Be wary thought because if the tape’s too thick, the decals will protrude too far out so avoid really thick tape for that reason
