Eggshell as fertilizer. Many gardeners wonder if eggshells can be added to the soil and if eggshells can be used as fertilizer. The answers to these questions are in our video.
Instructions on how to make this quick fertilizer.
Take clean and dry eggshells.
Put them into the oven for 2 minutes (200 C) to kill the Salmonella bacterias.
Grind the eggshells into powder.
Add vinegar, apple vinegar, or lemon juice to the ground eggshells. Vinegar has acetic acid (from 3% and more). The eggshell contains calcium carbonate. Calcium carbonate reacts with acid and forms calcium citrate. In this form, calcium becomes water-soluble and is well absorbed by the plants. Besides calcium, it contains Magnesium, Copper, Potassium, Iron, Zinc.
Leave it for 2-3 hours.
Add it to the soil while planting the plants.

Calcium is very important during the postharvest of fruits, as the calcium pectinates give firmness to the cell wall, allowing for a longer shelf life without (or in parallel) with energy consuming solutions, such as refrigeration or altered atmosphere.

Calcium carbonate (in eggshells) and vinegar will produce calcium acetate. Vinegar is acetic acid. To produce calcium citrate, you would need to use citric acid, like from citrus fruits.

Plants don't eat plant food at all. Plants consume only the waste that is produced by the micro organisms in and around the root ball of ALL plants. Your job as the plant caretaker is to create an environment near the root ball that will set up the symbiotic relationship between the plant and micro organisms that do feed the plant. Regardless of what people do put into their soil it cannot feed the plant until that food is in a form that the plant roots can digest through its root system. Micro organisms ARE attracted to any edible material and will do their best to consume it for their own health and ability to reproduce. The bodily waste that all micro organisms produce through eating any edible material is then absorbed into the plants root system by the plant to ensure its own growth cycle continues. Once the symbiotic relationship is established between the micro organisms and the plant , the plant will then produce sugars to keep the micro organisms in the area to remain a constant supply of waste for the plant to feed on. There were no plant foods available way back and yet we have many old variety species of them today....so that truth alone begs the question how did the plants survive....the answer is very obvious once you understand that our creator made it that way as part of his plan for our Earth. There are many videos here on you tube for making your own plant food that are cheap and easy to make AND they give a better return than ANY shop bought chemical rubbish can offer. Sadly, people are lazy so in reality the convenience factor means that many plants are doomed to an early death because people don't read instructions very well so the plant will die from either too much or too little salt based shop bought garbage and anything salt based is a death sentence for any plant. So, if you like the idea of higher yields and healthier fruits and vegetables jump on the better returns train , you won't regret it.

Egg shells are free as you eat the eggs and would otherwise just sling the shells.
@C3Voyage
@C3Voyage 7 ай бұрын
@@WideCuriosity Yep, I toss 'em in compost so they can break down for plants to use. Definitely don't waste them. But, if a person "counts" on eggshells for gardening, that's where it gets tough to source. I mean, if you have a family size garden and you want a successful one. That's why farmers don't do it. Pelletized lime is the real suggestion for gardeners. The amount (40lbs) for a better fix, and inexpensive cost of calcium (and magnesium) that is readily available to plants will actually help people. This crap people are doing online now is fad click-bait.
@C3Voyage

@@WideCuriosity Forgot....waiting two weeks of constantly eating eggs followed by electricity for oven, a grinding processor, a lemon, and the time invested isn't free. Give it a go for a couple years and see how you feel about it. Lastly, houseplants aren't fruiting plants. They're needs are much easier with water-soluble fertilizer. I guess there's value in having something to do though.

Not too different to how I use them, except I'm nowhere near as neat with the oven bit, they get dumped on the tray and hit the oven as I remove the cooked meal, and stay in there until the meal is over. 20 minutes later ? And I've never bothered to add vinegar. I felt they were small enough, had sufficient surface area, to sprinkle directly on the raised beds and dug lightly in prior to planting/sowing, as nutrients will slowly seep out anyway.

Try planting frost-resistant plants. Or grow plants in a greenhouse.

If you know cold or snow is coming you can put water in containers around the plants. Cover the plants too while it’s colder. It will make things warmer for the plants. Every layer increases protection by 5 degrees Fahrenheit. Air can also be a layer- in between. I currently live in Canada in zone 3b. I’ve lived in Texas zone 8. Growing frost resistant seeds works. However protecting your plants also works. Watch full moons as that is when it gets the coldest.

NOPE. Adding vinegar (acetic acid) to egg shells (calcium carbonate) yields calcium acetate, not calcium citrate. And while there is a difference between the two the name doesn't matter for this recipe. Calcium citrate and calcium acetate are both water soluble and will be picked up by the plants more readily than just regular egg shells in the soil alone
