How to Make Epoxy Coasters with New Silicone Molds | DIY Project

These wood and epoxy coasters are a perfect DIY project to use up scraps of wood you have around your shop. It's also a great opportunity to make a project with epoxy without having to purchase gallons of it. We used Alumilite Amazing Clear Cast Epoxy and Rockler Silicone Coaster Casting Molds . The skills you learn on this project can be applied to making larger epoxy projects, such as river tables and deep pour projects.

If you put the wood pieces on the bottom layer of epoxy, let it cure a little so it sticks well, then pour the top layer of epoxy, you won’t have to use anything to hold the wood down. That way you won’t have nail holes showing.

Curious question, I've got a project in mind that would require me to pour half the epoxy, let it cure, add the material that will be in the middle, then pour the other half of the epoxy. (sorry if that is confusing). Do you believe this could be done and it look as if it were a continuous pour? Or would it be clear that it was done in two separate pours?

I guess the pin holes are on the bottom side. Would it make sense to remove the weights after 6+ hours and see if pin holes will disappear that way?

You don’t have to sand the tops and bottoms?

Not if you don't want to. The epoxy will be extremely smooth and crystal clear right out of the mold. If you sand down any sharp corners or anything, you will have to sand up to a very high grit and then polish it to get it clear and that smooth again. The choice is yours.

Because of the wood being porous I doubt it would work.

Not sure we are understanding your application goal here. Are you putting this wood in a silicone mold and casting it in epoxy?

You want the epoxy to bond to the wood. I would not recommend spraying the mold release on the wood. If anything, you can apply a seal coat of epoxy or sanding sealer/lacquer to the wood to help prevent air bubbles from coming out. But it would be fine to just put the wood in the mold and pour the epoxy. Mold release should only be sprayed on the mold before putting in the wood and epoxy. Hope this helps.

Each epoxy is different, check the manufacturers recommendations on how deep it can be poured. Generally, you don't want to pour it thicker than a 1/4" at a time, unless it is deep pour epoxy.
