This recipe is the best way we've found to make an espresso with an Aeropress. The result is a full bodies coffee that's full of flavour.
The brewing technique is:
- 20 grams of coffee ground espresso fine.
- Add 20 grams of water at 98c (208f) and let it bloom for 45seconds.
- Add 40 grams of water and stir.
- Immediately after stirring, plunge.
In the second test, we also used the Prismo by Fellow to make the espresso even better. We also managed to do latte art in the aeropress espresso

As always, we'd love to hear your recipes/methods. How do you mimic an Espresso in an AeroPress?

Great job!! I've been searching all over for a recipe and demonstration of making an espresso like coffee with the AeroPress, with and without the Prismo. Yours is the first that actually mentions the expected output. Really great video. Thank you

This is such funny timing! I was just talking to a bunch of friends about the aeropress and its capabilities as a coffee brewer. I like the results you got from your tests and yeah it's not a fancy looking "espresso" with the creme and all that, the ratios are correct so by a round about way you nailed it 👍

I just tried this recipe, and it tasted amazing 😍 I had 2 real espressos in my life(unfortunately baristas were having problems with the machine/beans on my second one ever). And this tasted significantly better than both of them 😍 To have something better than this, I need to have a good espresso. I wasn't an espresso fan, but I might become one! The concentration of the sweetness was really interesting! Aeropress is making sweet coffee possible, and low volume of the coffee makes it very noticable! I made the ratio a bit different. I did 7-8g coffee, and 14-16g blooming water. With the concentration of this, even 8g tasted quite strong. 7g tasted quite tame, in comparison. I guess 12g would be the max I would like to do. 20g? I don't know. Sounds scary, although I might still try it. Around the time I will need to buy papers, I might buy a Fellow Prismo. For now, it's not necessary. I will need to accept a little dripping, for now 😅

Absolutely love my fellow prismo, I have practically stopped using the paper filters now as a result, even though now I mostly just use the prismo to make regular Aeropress filter coffees as I find the reusability and easy cleanup super convenient. That said, sometimes I've found like all metal filters, your coffee can be a tiny bit muddy towards the end and also since it's metal, unfortunately doesn't stop the oils, if any, from going through - so recently I've actually started using a paper filter on top of the metal filter lol, I know it's a bit crazy but it serves a purpose! And my goodness, the coffee is just the cleanest, richest and smoothest cup you can possibly have with the aeropress. I always try and maximize caffeine and flavor, so the Prismo lets me easily steep the coffee for long, I usually do 2-5 minutes, sometimes longer in case I go back to work and forget it accidentally lol but it's always a really nice cup of coffee. And again, if you're travelling it makes for a perfect upgrade to the regular Aeropress. Btw, thanks for doing these nerdy and explorative videos, I have only recently found out about your channel, but your presentation and passion are really great to see and learn from. Good luck and keep going! PS. The reason I stopped making 'espresso' style drinks with the Prismo is because I eventually purchased the Wacaco Picopresso, which btw is an absolute landmark invention in espresso, and the fact that it's portable too - mindblown. Absolutely incredible design. Highly recommend you try it and hopefully even review it!

Totally agree on the muddy flavour with metal filters. Like you, when I travel I only use the fellow for ease. However, it is risky too. Last trip we made, cameraman Neil knocked the metal filter full of coffee ground into a garbage bin and didn't notice. We didn't have (good) coffee for nearly a week as a result. haha.

I agree totally. I find that with Prismo filter I do have fines at end of cup (I drink long blacks). However, I find I can swirl last bit of drink that will dissipate most the fines in bottom of cup. Being a French Press drinker a having some finds at end of cup doesn't bother me. Also, if I drink fast enough and don't doddle 😄 there isn't enough time for undisolved fines to sink to bottom.

Loved the results I got with this. But, I'll be honest, grinding this fine by hand while travelling was a mission 🤣

Great how-to video! Just bought an Aeropress before spending bug bucks on an espresso machine. I love lattes and using your recipe resulted in a delicious one with full, complex flavors. Love that scale! Would you happen to know what brand it is? Thanks for all you do!

I have Aeropress Go and Prismo. I was able to get crema using Hayes Valley Espresso beans 10 days old, ground to 4I using a Vario Plus with ceramic burrs calibrated at 2Q. The recipe is 40g coffee, 100g water at 212° F. I put coffee in chamber first then, poured all 100g of water at one time and stirred 30 seconds plunging immediately, stopping at first resistance for 5 seconds then continuing until reaching grounds. There was a very nice thick crema which unfortunately dissipated when poured into hot water for Americano. The weighed output including crema was 74 grams. Output volume actually spilled over a 87ml demitasse. Unfortunately I have no video. I do have to say though that at such a fine grind and big dose plunging was a bit difficult. Maybe you can duplicate the recipe on video? Thanks

A lot of recipes seem to use 18g of coffee, but I find 18g too weak for some reason. I don't know why or whether it's wrong, but I only seem to like it with 22g of coffee, 60g water, and wait 45 secs before pressing. Hmmm.....

NOT my experience at all! I tried about three times to use AeroPress the normal way and ALWAYS the water dripped through and never just sat on top. Bloom, not bloom, irrelevant. For this difficulty, and with your other presentation, I changed to using AeroPress inverted; and this is the only way I use AeroPress.
