While it might seem like navigating the distance between “heaven and earth” is almost impossible, it’s actually the thing we were born to do. In this full length talk given at the 2018 Wisdom of the Near Death Experience Symposium in Austin, Texas, Curtis shows us how we can connect to the presence of the spiritual world anytime.

Curtis Childs is the digital media producer at the Swedenborg Foundation. While obtaining his degree in communication studies from Oakland University, Curtis experienced an internal battle with depression that led him to question God and his lifelong interest in Swedenborgian theology. After a period of intense suffering, he recovered from his depression with the help of modern medicine, therapy, and a return to the spiritually uplifting messages he found in Swedenborg’s writings. Now, Curtis is applying his education and desire to help others find peace through Swedenborg’s insights by producing and hosting this weekly webcast.
Rev. Dr. Jonathan S. Rose is the series editor of the New Century Edition, an ongoing project that incorporates the latest scholarship to produce a modern, accessible translation of Emanuel Swedenborg’s theological works. Holder of a B.A. and a M.Div. in religion and a M.A. and a Ph.D. in Latin, he has worked for years in the study of Neo-Latin and in Swedenborgian research. He was both chaplain and a tenured professor of religion and sacred languages at Bryn Athyn College before taking on his current position with the Swedenborg Foundation.

I am so grateful to be listening to this presentation by Curtis Child. I discovered NDEs many years ago and it lifted my understanding from the fuzzy Catholic fear based teachings I was given as a child. It was very reassuring and liberating. Saved by the Light, about Dannion Brinkley is a very inspiring book.

Wendy, the book you mention, SAVED BY THE LIGHT, was also deeply moving for me. When I mention the title nowadays, no one seems to remember it. Brinkley's story was one of the first that drew me to NDE's and I'm glad for the sincerity of his story. His later books are worth reading also but he seemed to become entangled with spirits who began to toy with his intellect. His sharing of psychic abilities was fascinating.

When you said " the bad river got him " is an excellent way to look at things, situations, whole decades for people and the human race. Objectivity and the ability to see things as they really are is the gift Swedenborg has provided the world, thanks be to Jesus. Who would of ever figured out life flows in as a river, one crystal clear one muddied and polluted. I tell my friends that if I have said something that you think about it is your own angels or good side that is recalling something to better your life. Now at bat Curtis, its a long deep drive its another home run for the good guys. Great stuff team.

Curtis, Bro, you are a fantastic speaker and servant of God! This is one of the most important topics in the whole world, I think. We all need to sort of put our best face on when we are interacting in the world, just so society can function, but in the privacy of our own heart we know the other side where we are selfish and materialistic also exists. It is easy to think nobody else struggles like we do, and it is easy to loathe ourselves when we see the disparity between the spiritual person we want to be and the reality of who we often are. If we view ourselves as all in this same struggle to unite the outer self with the inner self, we don't have to feel so alone in the journey and also we don't have to despair as much when the outer self is temporarily in control. I love that idea of the fundamental attribution error. If we view all of us on a long arc towards the spiritual beings we were created to be, we become much more understanding of others and ourselves. I really think a key to making this whole process easier on every single individual would be if we could become a culture steeped in forgiveness. If we all learned to forgive each other more easily, we wouldn't feel we had to hide our struggles from each other, we wouldn't feel so much shame about our shortcomings, and that in turn would lead to more honesty and connection, more boldness in trying to achieve our highest potential in terms of service to the world, and more compassion and unity with others. I loved this talk. Too bad we couldn't virtually be at the workshop, too!

Nadine, I (Karin) will pass on your kind words to Curtis! I'm so glad you enjoyed this talk, and we all greatly appreciate the way you express the insights that come up for you. What a changed world it would be if we could all look at each other and ourselves with the kind of compassion you describe! And we can each be working on developing that kind of perspective to contribute to the world. Because the world changes one person at a time, doing what he or she can one day at a time!

What I continually enjoy of Curtis is his casual, friendly, non-pressuring way of presenting what is found in the writings of Swedenborg. This tendency to show respect for differing views plus a gentle way of accommodating other beliefs is such a pleasure to witness. It makes me think of how Jesus spoke to people. Yes Terri, even puzzling areas in relatively obscure books like where The Gospel of Thomas tells us: 4 Jesus said to them, "When you make the two into one, and when you make the inner like the outer and the outer like the inner, and the upper like the lower, . . . then you will enter [the (Father's) domain]." How many today could figure what Jesus was talking about without Swedenborg's explanation. So puzzling has this been for me that when I heard Curtis' explanation I nearly bounded up out of my seat ( : { )

its amazing to me that the bible literally makes no sense, but with spiritual freedom and knowledge, I can use the words more to guide my inner path and connect more clearer with Jesus and this hidden message....it seems because of the hidden truths that its given freely to everyone but only few is it meant for....

To Terri: I started my Bible study at the age of 23. Today I am 75, and I want to say what you described above is absolute truth. What I found is after a few years of dedicated study, that "knowledge" expanded to where the Bible began to reveal itself much as a personal letter from a Father to a son - which to my astonishment was me. Now every day when I open the Bible the Father speaks from nearly every scripture, revealing this and that, showing me how these things apply in my daily living, or to the conduct of those around me. It's like the scripture tells us - knowledge of the Father is worth more than pure gold. Yet to a great many the Bible is just so much gibberish. I'm sorry to say it would appear they are the ones who are described as being "dead in their trespasses and sins."

Hi Nomad, would you mind telling me in which video did you see the explanation of that passage? It's interesting in of itself that people in the past seemed to take things like testimony with more reverence day if it was from a respected source and can be correlated from multiple different peoples experiences. Whereas today it feels like we are always negotiating with peoples world views. We are so much more blessed now than ever before in history to deal with this and it's never been so difficult to actually write down our experiences. You know, Frank said this and Curtis had the same experience. wow, that's amazing. That's why I love this channel so much because that's what the Swedenborg foundation does.

Emanuel Swedenborg was an evolved Soul, He was much wiser then many in his area, I believe this is why God choose him to reveal the spirit world to. I know Swedenborg did not believe in reincarnation or maybe the Lord did not want to reveal this to him. But as I see it we do reincarnate and we do so to become more knowledgeable souls, Swedenborg was one such soul, very wise, very knowledgeable and could handle the spiritual knowledge he was taught by the Lord. I find the wiser the soul the more knowledge the Lord shares with such souls.
@offTheLeftEye
@offTheLeftEye 6 жыл бұрын
Thanks for sharing your perspective on reincarnation with us. You're correct that Swedenborg did not claim reincarnation within his theology, as his concept of "evolving" came through spiritual growth here on earth, culminating in a process in the World of Spirits where good spirits are taught the faith of heaven. They then go on to continue evolving into more loving and connected angels into eternity.
@arizona972
@arizona972 6 жыл бұрын
Gerald Brush I think for the general population reincarnation is not the norm. Bettie Eadie mentioned that only certain spirits come back. This is only allowed because those spirits come with a particular mission on earth, they might help to break an addiction problem in a family, to help increase awareness o compassion a spirit might come here as a homeless or a disabled person to help a family, etc. I am not saying it is true but it certainly makes you think. I guess we will find out when we get there lol!

Great program!! I liken it to Romans 8:7 “Because the carnal mind is enmity against God: for it is not subject to the law of God, neither indeed can be.” KJV Bible I like to, take away from all this that it is not really two states we are talking about here but one. God’s state of being is perfect.... like the answer to a complex math equation. The answer is always there and all the mistakes you make on your way to solving it are just that - errors or mistakes. The only reason we seem to feel punished is because we our out of line with the Law of God or perfect being. Our relative existence “ here” on earth is just that ... relative. Relative to how far along you are in solving the “math equation”. The reason it seems like two different places is described metaphorically in the Bible and many other religious teachings and schools of thought e.g., “the mist gone up from the earth”, the “matrix” etc. I always remember what Jesus said when asked where the “Kingdom of Heaven” was.. His reply was, “Neither shall they say Lo here! Or, lo,there! For behold, the kingdom of God is within you.” Luke 17:21 Swedenborg was fortunate to have this all presented to him in visions which seem to correlate to the period in which he lived in terms of language and imagery ( much like the King James Version of the Bible), but aren’t we glad we can use the correspondences to bring it to our daily experiences. Thanks again!

This, "Turning of Inwards to Outwards" (The very act in of itself) creates Everything. It can almost be thought of us as a form of Communication, a transference of information, energy. This Eternal tuggawar, this constant attempt of trying to correct what appears a difference between one thing and another. Just as the Spiritual Realm (World) is constantly mirroring the Physical Realm, Vice Vera. It's a type of 'Reflecting' that is but the function of a thing changing from inwards to outwards... The Spiritual Realm and the Physical Plain are but Mirroring one another, they are equal-opposites. Life and Death, Male and Female, in and out, night and day, etc. These are all Reflections of our Progenitor's real, true attributes. Like a flower blooms a Pentagram array of pedals, is an artistic expression of something of the Spiritual Dimension. Just as the design of the need for the existence of Death with Life - so that something may be created from it, almost as if a 'Substrate', or Canvas is needed in order for something (Anything) to ever exist in the first place! We can see this in Nature in the Physical World, when an Animal or Plant dies, its Carcass provides for something to exist other than it. Plants die and then leave behind for something to grow in its place... It is thus the Great Exchange is completed, repeated. The Most selfless act - of giving oneself up for another to exist. So selfless is our supreme Progenitor, so unselfish. So giving is the nature of Truth, Love, Compassion, Joy, Life. So must we be to close that loop that of our Creator's. We have to reciprocate, or we simply cannot, and will not continue to exist. This is why as Humans we have to go beyond ourselves, beyond the illusion that is our reality here on Earth. We must share. The Foundation is created by the very Act of trying to correct or realign a change. We are, therefore we must be - that too is a form of reflection! I get why this Christ Figure (Yeshua) sacrificed himself, the same reason Odin sacrificed himself on the World Tree (Yggdrasil), in order to allow for the creation of something, and Odin his Left Eye in exchange for Truth and Secrets revealed. The Law of Equivalent Exchange.

Hi, Sonya! I can't know exactly why things went this way for you. It's possible that because it frightened you, you pushed it away. Or maybe it was in Divine Providence because it was not helping you but only frightening you. I know there are some who seem to have spiritual sensitivity when they are children, but then it disappears when they become older, so I think it's not so unusual. Some people who have spiritual-experience sensitivity experience it as a blessing, and others as a curse. So, I guess rather than try to figure out what happened, maybe just accept that wherever you are right now is a good place to be. Curtis doesn't have obvious spiritual experiences, and yet he tries to see all of life as part of spirituality. After this short earthly life we will all be fully in the spiritual realm, anyway!

Brilliant, Curtis. Thank you. You are an extraordinary teacher. Kind of annoying you are less than half my age but hey, better for an old fool to understand these things late rather than never. However, one question ... where were you when I was fifteen? Rather a serious failure on your part, you'll have to admit.

Hi, Sonya, it is mostly two of us team members that respond to questions and comments on KZbin, because Curtis is so busy with show production. Those team members are myself (Karin) and Chris. But if someone really needs to ask something of Curtis, we let him know and then he finds the time to do so.

I've listened to certain people who have tapped into those who have died suddenly. (Psychics) They relate incidences where those who have died suddenly know they have died but their consciousness is still lingering around or they are still stuck in the body and can feel what is happening to their body after they have been pronounced dead. How do you explain this....these aren't near death experiences but actual death experiences picked up from those who can physically pick up someone else's death experience....This had never been explained from Swedenborg.
@offTheLeftEye
@offTheLeftEye 5 жыл бұрын
Hello, Elizabeth! Thanks for the good question. An important thing to keep in mind is that just because someone picks up on messages from spirits does not automatically means that those messages are accurate. Spirits can lie, can pretend to be someone they are not. Or, spirits can temporarily *think* and *feel* that they are someone who they are not. I choose to believe in a system designed by a loving God, which is designed to take careful of people at the time of death. There are thousands of stories out there to choose from, but I find stories like this one to be consistent with an overall loving system: "I had a friend who was murdered while at her counseling job in a prison. When I heard the news I was filled with instant instinctive horror. I refused to learn any details, but I already knew the sort of crimes her clients had been convicted of. That night I went to bed shaken and vulnerable. In the night I heard beautiful music. It had a bell-like quality, yet was not earthly. There in a simple robe, kneeling above and in front of me, was my friend. She was grinning, her head slightly tilted back. She was holding out both hands, cupped together like a bowl. They were overflowing with huge diamonds. In some telepathic way she let me know that even while those terrible last earthly experiences were happening, they were transformed by the Lord into dazzling, rainbow-flashing jewels. Then she laughed, a chuckle that teased me because I was still stuck in materialistic mental bondage-and she was free. Her gentle chiding did more to lighten me than a thousand sentiments." -From A Dove at the Window: Living Dreams and Spiritual Experiences, with passages from the Writings of Emanuel Swedenborg by Vera P. Glenn To me, stories of people experiencing stuck-ness or distress at the time of death are more likely to be misunderstandings on the part of the psychic. From my own research, the reports of blissful peace and love at the time of death, even if there were violent outer circumstances, far far outweigh the reports of negative experiences. And the idea of someone's spirit-body still feelings physical feelings after leaving the physical body just doesn't make much scientific sense to me. Again, there are far far more stories reporting that the spiritual body is free and above anything the physical body is going through: "Among the case histories collected by [Dr. Robert] Crookall is the account by an American doctor, R. B. Hout of Indiana, who seems to have been endowed with a rare degree of psychic vision. At the death-bed of his aunt, he claimed to have seen, “this astral body hanging suspended horizontally a few feet above the physical counterpart. It was serene and in repose. But the physical body was active in reflex movements and subconscious writhings of pain. I saw the features plainly. They were very similar to the physical face except that a glow of peace and vigour was expressed instead of age and pain.” -From Life After Death by Neville Randall After the death process, after a person has completely crossed over, if that person had been very fixated on material life or selfish pursuits, that person will leave the initial protective care of the angels and go back down near the earthly plane. To me, it is a more likely explanation that some low-level spirit comes near to the scene of a sudden death and then poses (either intentionally or ignorantly) as the dying person. Such low-level spirits can actually have some degree of interaction with and attachment to physical matter. (See our show "Do Ghosts Exist?" kzbin.info/www/bejne/g2mYpaeubq2to5I) So, those are my thoughts about it, but of course you must decide for yourself what makes the most sense! We share the universal dying process, as experienced and reported by Swedenborg in our episode "How Angels Take Care of Us When We Die" kzbin.info/www/bejne/Z6PRnGpoq61qjdU

hey Everyone... hope you all are doing fine ... this is interesting and I thought this would be an awesome guest for your show to have if it were possible I know she comes to US a lot ... Lorna Byrne is a lady who sees and talks to angels and has written many books on this ... and the minute you listen to her, you know she is telling you her truth. here is her youtube channel... I think ... it has many of her videos but it maybe a fan site.. goo.gl/jgzEC9 she sees her guardian angel and all of our guardian angels and i know this may seemingly conflict with what Swedenborg espoused but maybe not b/c most times when ppl who are allowed to have these type of experiences they don’t always get to see everything in heaven per se .... anyway i thought you guys would find this interesting if nothing else and maybe you could do a remote guest appearance too you know via internet type of thing if she is back home and not in the US have a great day all!! and this was another awesome video you guys put together!!!!! God Bless!! reny

@19:00 but ... the Earth is stationary and very flat and the Sun - as well as the Moon - are going around the Earth indeed. Now what?
@offTheLeftEye
@offTheLeftEye 6 жыл бұрын
It sounds like you believe in flat earth theory-is that right? We respect your right to believe whatever makes the most sense to you, but our channel is here to share what Swedenborg wrote in his books, and from both his scientific and spiritual-world perspective, he presents earth as a spherical planet in a universe of other spherical planets that circle around suns/stars. I'm sorry if this doesn't match your beliefs about this, and I hope you feel free to just connect with the ideas that resonate with you, setting aside the rest.

On this channel we mostly reflect Swedenborg's practice of using the name "the Lord", which is a focus on the Divine Human manifestation of God in Jesus Christ. But Swedenborg learned that the various names of God each reflect a particular quality of God. Since there are infinite qualities of God, the hundreds of names attributed to God in the Bible and the thousands of names that have been used in all world religions throughout the ages are only a small expression of who our Creator is.

This teaching has nothing to do with God and His Son Jesus. My heart is crying for my son who started to listen this lies instead of reading the Bible. I will pray for him more, asking God to open his spiritual eyes, and not to listen satanic teaching, but to red the Word of God.

In general, on this channel we define "spiritual" as "living according to the teachings of the Lord God Jesus Christ." We honor each individual's spiritual freedom to find the path toward God that is right for them. Blessings to you on your chosen journey.
