My mother would recycle (technically upcyle) our old toys, they would emerge as something "new" under the tree the following Christmas. I still have an old dressmaker doll that was broken, mom repaired her limbs, made a wig for her nearly bald head from my own hair (she had saved it from my first haircut), she made a bridal gown with lace, beads, old jewelry. There were two dolls under the tree recycle by mom for my sister and I, that was the year I turned ten, I am just shy of 70. My mother had a gift, but, she never saw it that way, she did love doing it, but, she was also very practical. There was not alot of "fun" money left over, so mom would make the best of what she could, as would my dad. So, from the time I could hold a pencil and moved beyond a scribble, to scissors and glue, I was inspired to craft and create. To make use of what was already available to reinvent or recreate. I was about seven when I made my first dollhouse out of a cardboard box, there was "wallpaper" from magazines, furniture "upholstered" with fabric scraps. It probably was a monstrosity, but, I was very proud of it, until one of my cousins visited and crushed it. I was devastated at the time. Lol! My life since has been filled with my art and my craft (it's a strange thing, but, I do distinguish the two). Besides my mom, I had other influences that inspired my crafting skill sets and taught me the basics that I would expand on or apply to other media down the road. An old friend and I are partnered in a small craft business, based in upcycling, we have been in business for over a dozen years. The point of this ridiculously long winded post is I have been at this for a very long time and I have honed my skills to as professional a finish as a hand made product possibly can. When your channel first popped into my feed, I thought this is just going to be another lackluster craft youtuber. Whoo boy, was I wrong. I immediately subscribed. Diedre, you continue to impress, thank you. Despite my experience and despite my abilities ... your videos have taught this old dog new tricks. You are a treasure with your endless tips, tricks and work arounds, using readily available and easily obtained products. This video is just another example (wonder how this would decoupage ... hmmm). Again, Diedre, thank you. You, and, what you do are very much appreciated.

What a fun technique. I tore pieces of brown bags and glued them on a bench I was making. To get the leather look I added shoe polish which made it look like leather. I also saw the bag and shoe polish technique used to cover a wall to look like leather wallpaper. 😊🤗😚❤❤

This project reminded me of when I was in the 6th grade and we made Mexican skirts out of sheets of packing paper. We colored the paper with crayon colors and then crumpled and wrinkled up the paper so much that it became pliable and cloth-like. This was back in 1970! HAHAHA 🥳😂

I just did a few - I didnt use coffee/tea stain - ony put the die over it - I tried it with brwn, blue, green and burgundy colored dye (because people might want a different color - this is junk journaling after all!) and I'm loving it - it's still drying but it's looking to awesome .... the blue spread more when I applied the hand cream - maybe I should have let it dry longer but I just love it too much ... maybe next time I'l let the blue dry overnight for a more stark difference between the paper and the creases .... but thank you for this awesome idea, Deidre!!!!!! So many options :D

Hi Diedre, Marlene from Michael's here. Been devouring all your videos since we met! ...AND loving it! As Maxwell Smart used to say. I made a faux leather on cardstock once long ago. I believe I used odorless solvent on it. It turned out so well I couldn't bear to use it 😂. I pull it out every so often a remind myself to try it again. Love the idea of decoupage, I've been meaning to make a wooden tissue box to hide ugly boxes. I think this technique would look great in on that box if I ever get it done!

There was a technique many many years ago using mod podge and a lighter I believe, on brown kraft paper that was very popular. I saw it on Aleene's Creative Living show.
