The equipment is only part of this puzzle. Storytelling, editing, music, emotional twisting of the viewer... you obviously have it pretty well dialed in Trent.

Solid Advice! I especially like how you started with STORY and CHARACTER. Too often filmmakers worry more about the gear and less about the story they are telling.

Fully agree about Magic Hour/Golden Hour. Favourite time of the day. I’m not a pilot myself but I enjoy watching different people and seeing their style of filming, only way one is to get better is too seek and learn from others. Thank you for sharing your view/knowledge with us.

I just switched over to the the Sony Action Cams. I like how they don’t chapter the footage as frequently as the GoPros and the remote is also a cool feature that is easier to use.

I just tripped over your channel a couple weeks ago and have been binge watching it ever since! as a pilot and photographer I am constantly impressed by your videos. This one is like icing on the cake. From the incredible story line of not even wanting to be a fixed wing pilot to where you are now, to the outstanding quality of your footage. I really like your setup. Those Sony action cams with the synchronized remote and REAL camera mounting hardware seem like the best option for someone who regularly works in your industry. I think you have the best possible setup with minimized workload in the cockpit which is pretty important ;-) Thank you so much for showing us all "how its done"!! If you ever want to get down on some seaplane action in FL, let me know!! Cheers!

Storytelling is really what it's all about. In the simplest form is the beginning, middle, and end. If you watch "regular" "Hollywood" films, you'll find that happening. Your eye for great cinematography in the "full scale" world through your drone flight is very much shown. If you weren't in the drone world, it might not be as effective. You clearly do exactly what the psychologically want. Just have fun, Trent, you're doing a great job. Thanks for the personalized responses to KZbin messages as well! You say you 've considered an external recorder. I'd recommend something like the Sony ICD-AX 412 or something similar and then match that with your video. That allows you to mix the external engine noise AND whatever level you want for the cockpit stuff - to me, there's something special about having about 40% engine hum mixed in with the cockpit audio to make things more realistic.

Sweet, I’ll look into that recorder, I actually have a little Zoom H1 that will work, I just need to go try it out.

I'm sure the zoom will work fine since it has a line in on the side. Maybe better audio quality from it?

That we ND filter is more handy with aviation shots than meets the eye! Your shots are beautiful, no bizarre digital artifacts on the propellers. Looks quite natural. That stabilized cockpit camera is with its weight in gold, the result looks wonderful, with results that put the viewer right there!

Great video Trent. Picked up your channel originally on the basis that we share a surname and subscribed due to your awesome content. I am very envious of the type of flying you can do but it is a bit different here in the UK. I have set myself the challenge of uploading a weekly flying video about the grass roots, farm strip flying I do in my Jodel DR1050. This is a very good video to compare styles and methods. Thanks for posting and keep up the great work. Tim Palmer

Trent, another great video, thanks for doing that. The one thing you didn't touch on was your selection of background music, soundtracks, copyright issues, where you get your music, etc. The music adds so much to the video and you do an excellent job of making that work. Thanks again from a rusty old pilot who you inspired to get back into flying.

Great tips, worth learning by anyone who wants to shoot video. I hope when film makers start asking Trent to utilize his skills in other ways on the set we still get regular aviation videos. And "Magic Hour"... living under my local airport's pattern, I can always spot the pilots who are just going up for a 30 minute joy ride for the beauty of sunset from the air.

Thanks again Trent! I was looking at the GoPro6 but the Sony with the Watch seems pretty interesting! I think Go-Pro does it through the "App." but I always like a dedicated piece of hardware.I'm probably going for a "SLING 4is" so with no struts it complicates mounting a bit but well see! Good advice on storytelling. So many times I'm sent to tell a story and what I find is totally different than what I was given. I always tell customers "Have a script" or at least, what is the story you want to tell.Enjoy Oshkosh.

Trent, if I could add just one thing, and this is something that you do; don't edit out the gafs, goofs and personal mistakes. It adds true texture, depth and humility to the story. It makes the story so much more real and 3 dimensional than the 'Look at me shine!' account.

@SteFly

Thank you for this great video!! I´m flying gliders and make also vlogs. There I try to avoid mounting cameras outside of the glider, because they create some extra aerodynamic drag. Espcially when flying a competition or when attempting some records, this is not what you aim for. Did you try to mount an electronical gimbal outside of the plane? This would be great to avoid the 2,5 million dollar setup, to get some awesome air to air shots ;)
@TrentonPalmer
@TrentonPalmer 6 жыл бұрын
That makes total sense about drag on a glider. My plane is so draggy as is I would be silly to worry about that! I wish I could find a gimbal that I could mount externally. I have yet to find one that can handle the wind loading at regular flight speeds

Yes, there is no gimbal on the market right now. I already thought about building one on my own, which is aerodynamically encased.
