Ps: The 1995 timeline issue really is a mess due to my own mistakes. Flip the recording dates of the phone guy video and William's death around. Last note: Most of the videos actually feature Mike behind the camera, and there is a reason for that, which not only makes sense of the Sister Location video, but also is something hinted/referred to a few times during the series.

The only issue I had was trying to figure out how the 1995 tape fit with the timeline but that’s such a small thing compared to the whole thing being such an amazing series! With the Micheal thing, that was just my own theory on who could be recording since there was always a jumpscare at the end and just assumed that meant that it was an extra who was attacked, not that whoever we were looking through somehow got away. Definitely good to know to understand things better 👍 Really enjoying a lot of your works and can’t wait to see what else you have going on for future projects (already obsessed with the backrooms series as well)

In the paranormal investigation video for FNAF 2 (1987), the spirits say “it’s him”, despite not knowing William’s face. Then they mention the badge, the investigator’s badge. The investigator then asks about his brother. Here is my take, and what I believe to be the truth. The investigator is Michael Afton, who took the job as JR’s night guard to get close to the animatronics alone, where they will be more likely to communicate. Michael is there to discover why the animatronics are hurting other guards, yes, but also to find out if his little brother is also a spirit. He feels guilty about what he did: The Big Kiss of ‘83. Freddy/Gabriel points out the badge not because the kids all assume a badge is a badge is a badge, but because of what is written on it. It’s a name tag, after all… and it says Afton. Because it is Michael’s last name. Which is why the animatronics are convinced that Michael is actually William. Despite not knowing William’s face, they see the name “Afton” and assume it is him. Yet in previous attempts to find him via other guard incidents, they are never sure until they accidentally kill the guard. The animatronics are never berserk or super crazy when they go after the other guards. They hunt them down, but don’t… go insane. But when Michael shows up and has a small conversation with Gabe, all the animatronics get active and start making noises and laughing maniacally. New behavior. Finally, this is it, they can get out revenge and move on. Then they actively try to kill him, whereas before they were hunting the guards and _trying_ to incapacitate them. Again, new behavior. This is definitely Michael Afton. But he survives the attack and runs away… but he has to come back eventually, because now he is 100% sure the spirits are there and can communicate. And now the animatronics know Michael’s face, so whenever he shows up at another locations to investigate, they immediately go off on him.

To me there’s two distinct ends that both offer satisfying conclusions to the Freddy storyline. Fnaf 3 where William gets his comeuppance and the original souls are freed. And pizzeria sim where everyone remaining has their souls freed and the story has been developed more and loose ends tied off. With UCN being the epilogue

How to make fnaf scary again: -Realism -Believable lore -Believable setting (place, ambiance and tone) -Good and frighting gameplay -avoid giving human characters to much backstory. (Can we agree that the story has started to resolve way too much to the Aftons to the point that It's quality declined? It's always about them and not the actual animatronics anymore like it was in the first three games)
@Seba12322
@Seba12322 Жыл бұрын
I think it’s ok to give the main characters backstory, as long as it doesn’t take away from the main story. I like the familial aspect of the story as it gives weight to Mike’s actions as he tries to stop his father. I just with the animatronics were also important to the story, either being a separate party fighting against william, or with Michael.
@Pygargue00fr
@Pygargue00fr Жыл бұрын
@@Seba12322 it is. And having backstories to characters is the important. However too much backstory kills the characters. If one character is everything and everyone at the same time. He looses credibility. This is exactly what happened to William Afton. He started as a shadow, so to speak, a background character who's actions and the consequences they caused plagued the entire storyline. Always represented as a purple in the minigames, as this specific color choice was specificaly used to mask his identity. We never actually meet him. Never. His identity was to remain a mystery, a puzzle we needed to complete, the possible awnser being the Phoneguy, who we also never see. The Killer's motivations? Thrill and pleasure. The pleasure to inflict pain on poor souls who he had probably choosed because childrens are easier targets. And when we finally do meet the man that started it all, it's in an all out battle for survivial, against his decayed remains trapped in a suit. There where never any plans to go any further with Purple guy. And this shows, as the name "Afton" comes from the books. The first one really is the only official media out of the entire series who depicted Afton as a believable serial killer. But as more of the story was reworked and major plot points got redconned. He couldn't just be a serial killer. He couldn't just be the co-fondator of Freddy's. No... he had to be more, he had to be everything: a mad scientist, a genius, a virus, a family man, a god... he couldn't just be the unknown serial killer who's actions caused everyone to suffer, only to face his crimes and wear a springlock grave alone, wich may I remind you, was originaly conceived as his punishment for all he had done. He shouldn't be happy to be Springtrap. He should be enraged and violent, while retaining his sneakier approch, as seen in fnaf 3. A lot of other characters suffer from the same problems: they become popular, then brought back without understanding what made them work in the first place. Look at Ennard or Circus Baby, and what was done with them as time went on.... The puppet had it the worse, it's entire role as the Puppeteer who gives the childrens the gift of life and then gides them to theirs revenge was entirely dropped in favor of being Henry's sole reason to exist.... Mike is surpringly the one guy who we don't know much about. And it's great! But it should have been the same for the others too.
@V01X3

@@Pygargue00fr I think Afton is a great example of how to ruin a fantastic villain. In William's case he suffers from what I call a "Overfilled Cup" you put too much in it, it spills however some people still drink from the cup anyway. I do admit though, there are some things added to William that give his character tons of more intrigue and interest. Some parts are more interesting than others. For example I find Glitchtrap to be an insanely interesting character and concept. I do think with characters such as Ennard, Baby, and Puppet they don't suffer from being brought back almost at all. Ennard's reappearance as Molten Freddy doesn't really add and or take away from his character. It does give him more personality by being pretty much insane. Circus Baby to Scrap Baby mostly adds. It seems a huge shift in Circus Baby's personality. She's not pretending anymore; she is now doing things for her father William. Puppet I think fully adds on, being brought back at the end to be finished off I think works very well. I think Henry could've had other reasons to be in the universes story- though in massively different ways. In the case of Security Breach's "Tangle" or "Blob" is definitely a character that I think could mess up other characters... though that is something we have to wait for - for now. It's always good to give your characters a backstory, and like you said there comes a point to where you give them too much backstory. It definitely feels like much- but it makes Afton's character more complex in good ways and frustrating ways. All in all though, Afton was a great character that managed to be ruined possibly due to fame, and also overwritten with their past. However there are multiple ways to fix that, and or efficiently display said character's multiple qualities.

40:10 it is interesting to note that as jeramey walks through the pizzaria, the static that shows up on screen is the "cloaking device" static from fnaf ar that shows up when somthing is right in front of you just invisable, so in theroy since there were multiple strong static sweeps either a) all five childern were watching him as spirits, or b) somthing was leading him to mangle. (and i know the creator knows fnaf ar somewhat well because they use balloon boys exact shock/win animation earlier on)

0:36 The term to own here is _willing suspension of disbelief._ FNAF1 had the benefit of being the most _believable_ scenario in the franchise. It might not have the most decisions per second or standalone engaging gameplay, but it was the most immersive for me as a horror experience; something only since replicated by games like The Intruder (on Roblox) or Alternate Watch. This is why I was looking forward to FNAF+. When it comes to game experience and immersion, believability is generally more important than realism. (Tangentially related, that's how we end up with things like the _coconut effect,_ too. Horse clip-clops aren't realistic, but it became a strong enough trope that audiences expected it to be there; same with the _shing_ of someone drawing a sword.)

Scott was and still is terrible at modeling humans, he didn’t portray the violent scenes because he couldn’t do them justice, child murder wouldn’t sit right with an audience especially when it feels like a joke instead of a tragedy. It had nothing to do with them being “kids games” since that wasn’t his original audience nor the one he had in mind when making the original trilogy.

So I watched this series a while back, watching each video individually rather than in the compilation so I could read the comments and whatnot. Something I found was that the Phone Guy tape wasn't even planned originally; someone in the comments suggested doing a video related to Phone Guy's death, and Valox liked the idea, so he incorporated it into the series. So that might be part of the reason it doesn't fit in neatly.

51:29 is so interesting. as another commentor has mentioned, michael afton was mostly likely the one speaking with gabriel like we heard before. from what i've gathered from the interaction, they saw that his nametag read "afton" the same way their killer's did. anytime they see the name afton, they go crazy since they assume that its william. perhaps michael using the name "mike schmidt" would keep them off his tail, at least for a little while, while he tries to save them. let me know what you guys think! edit: "do you know my brother?" being followed with gabriel asking, "badge?" might suggest that the animatronics thought william and michael are brothers! gabriel saying "you are with him?" further suggests this to me!

I believe that it was not William in the tape, that it was actually Henry, as he talks about his child- his child being Charlotte- as Henry & Micheal are working together in this series, I believe its showing that Henry also had blood on his hands, and that is why he too is working with Micheal- someone who he'd likely want NO interest in working with considering his affiliation with his father- but has to, to save his daughter.

I feel like the killer in the March 22nd video wasn't William. Now up until now the victims were describing stabs and stab wounds. the blood splatters from the 8-bit video gives me reason to believe that they came from stab and defense wounds. Now taking into account Williams ego, he wouldn't switch his murder weapon so willingly from a knife to a gun. Also what the person is saying is something that William would say. It wouldn't make sense if it was Afton speaking as he said that he'll save his daughter but also call the robots ridiculous. We don't ever see William try and save his family but choose to work on the robots, his experiment. He also probably wouldn't call his work ridiculous considering the Circus Baby Emporium. But with Henry we see him save Charlie using William's/the puppet's method of body disposal by literally having the puppet shoved into a Freddy-esque suit. He would also have a hatred to the animatronics if he were to find out what William did with the suits.

I remember seeing the thumbnail for this video and I could just never get it out of my head. I kept wanting to come to it and sit down and watch it, and I finally had the opportunity to do so! (On a late school night of all things LOL) I mainly like looking at these FNaF related video essay's to inspire my own works (That are also related to FNaF). I'm a major writing nerd and fan of the FNaF series itself! The thing about these VHS related FNaF videos is that they really capture what wasn't able to be captured in actual FNaF. We see these different gruesome iconic moments from FNaF and not only that- this VHS series builds on the universe's already existing characters. It's honestly really nice to see so many different sides of the FNaF fandom. I'm a huge fan of the Security Breach Era, but also a big fan of the old... VHS related series. Both have their advantages and disadvantages, but one thing we shouldn't forget is really how horrific the FNaF universe is no matter what part of the universe you are in. I mean heck, I'm sure the Security Breach era will cook up something almost as or even more horrific than the Afton Era. This is 100% a fantastic example of how to build upon a universes already established story and turn it into something different. (This series for example having TONS of more depth, but also more horrifying.) For any other Creative writer's in the comments, don't be afraid to change the FNaF universe to your liking! You could make fantastic things such as this if you really allow yourself to go wild and not be limited. These VHS tapes inspire me so much as a creative individual, but also make me wonder on why I enjoyed/liked FNaF in the first place, and why did FNaF stick with me for all these years? I guess.. something about the franchise just has a charm that never dies. Anyway, I absolutely LOVED this video. I've actually taken a few notes myself to help aid in my own personal writings! Keep up the content man, and huge shout to Valox for making the fantastic VHS series you analyzed wonderfully! ((Also wanted to add on, my favorite part is honestly the huge amount of depth Valox put into the characters. It's actually insane and makes them so much more relatable and memorable! A good example was the Phone Guy scenes Pre and Post Death, and the ending with Michael, Henry, and Afton))

How I thought the PG arc could have worked if it weren’t unofficial: would have simply gone with the tape being made by Henry in case anything were to happen to Phone Guy. A fail safe made to get Mike up to speed when he was ready and willing to finish off his dad as well as assist him with getting the other spirits free. Even using him to create The Pizza Sim after the first attempt failed. Henry could have even been planning to kill William in the spring lock suit. So he left him for dead but PG heard him inside the walls screaming. So PG is told what’s up and helps Henry with his pest problem till he bit it. Then found the second longest surviving night guard after PG to get the tape. Maybe I just like thinking Henry knew what he was doing from day one after Charlie was given a sore throat. The SL tape was definitely a maintenance guy, one of two hanging in place of Funtime Foxy and Ballora. As for the woman we hear in the Pizza Sim AND in the video where she bites it with her camera on, I’m thinking she was supposed to be a Vanny or tape girl add-in. She doesn’t seem to have any purpose but to spout exposition on animatronics to Mike when he’s having a moment with Charlie and show William get free from…the wall? Also, anyone going to talk about the Freddy test video split second with corpse Charlie clearly mutilated being haunting as hell?! I mean her description was enough but seeing her corpse: damn.

The only way I could see the phone guy tape being plausible is... They both planned the springlock. I mean- considering what happened on Pizza sim, it wouldn't be a too far off theory. Phone Guy and Henry were planning to make William die by his own creation, by his own hands, because then, who would tell on them that they planned it? William?- The tape being found before it actually happened only would mean that phone guy died earlier than they expected, before the plan could go down... They'd probably crash his car or explode it idk, to make it seem like William actually died in a car crash, and only reveal the truth for Michael when Phone Guy dies. Also this would coincide with the fact that Henry found him BEFORE the springlocks became loose. If he WANTED to, he could've saved William. He didn't.

This series is just exactly what i love about FNAF, the bones of the original story, and the atmosphere. It's just a serial killer story, but made so good because you can absolutely believe a child killer would own and use a kids restaurant to make a hunting ground. Also your voice is so nice and calming it makes watching so nice

I always thought that the man behind the camera in the fnaf 2 spirit talk was indeed Michael Afton. My reason for this is that Gabriel/Freddy repeatedly says either “mick” or “nick” before saying “ha” and followed by “afton.” It’s a bit of a stretch, but I could imagine that Gabriel doesn’t actually know how to pronounce Michael, and ends up saying “mick-ha.” The guy being Michael would also explain why the ghost says “it’s him” when he enters, since Michael is known to look enough like his father to mistake them. If the person saying “it’s him” really is the puppet, and if Purple Guy wasn’t wearing the suit when he killed the Charlie, then she’d know somewhat what he looked like. This would, unfortunately, mean that the ghosts don’t actually know who killed them. This would also mean Michael survived the encounter. It’s a longshot nonetheless, but still something I like to consider.

What I don't quite understand is why the original creator used the FNAF 1 models for 1985 in the timeline? Wouldn't the unwithered animatronics be correct here?

@StarfayeArt

I wonder about that. Since Michael looks so much like William it's triggering to the kids, and they don't know exactly which man killed them for a while, it would be interesting to see the reaction to a female night guard. Depending on who makes hiring choices (like Steve Raglan from the movie), Afton may or may not have power over hiring in that position.

@@1Tombb Something doesn't have to be rated R to not be intended for children..That's horrible logic. Not everything needs gore and uncensored sex just to be listed as "intended for teens and up"..I'd consider quite a few card games not for children, as the strategy needed to play them is above what children can do. Scott said himself when making FNAF he was intending it to be for children, he didn't even know kids would play them or enjoy them.
